Welcome to Killarney in Ireland! Killarney National Park and the town of Killarney are located in the south-west of the country, at one end of the famous Ring of Kerry tourist route. We had seen some pictures before coming here, and yet we were almost stunned when we arrived at the national park. What greenery! Moreover, we found a small charming town and, of course, some castles and mansions ...
Table of contents
Killarney National Park
Located south and west of the town of the same name, Killarney National Park consists of three large lakes, several high mountains and a large natural area where red deer roam. In the national park there are also several magnificent buildings. When we drove into the area it was overcast, but despite that we got a nice view of the lakes and mountains.
Pagan forest and waterfalls
We stopped the car at a sign about "Torc waterfall". Here we walked into a forest that was probably one of the greenest we have ever seen. With moss growing on all the rocks and branches, it almost looks like a magic forest. The waterfall was not overly large but contributed a lovely rushing sound to the forest.
Muckross House
We decided to visit Muckross House and Gardens, located in the national park. This is a very beautiful house in beautiful surroundings, with green areas, a lake, gardens and greenhouses. Everywhere are also the horses and carriages, which seem typical of the whole area of Killarney in Ireland.
Visiting the gardens is completely free, but if you want to go on a guided tour of the house, you have to pay a fee. The sun had finally come out and we preferred to walk around outside on this day.
Ross Castle
Close to the town of Killarney is the old Ross Castle. The castle, which is a tower house from the 15th century, is nicely located by a lake where there are usually boat trips and you can also take a guided tour of the castle. When we arrived it was quite late and we were too tired for a guided tour, so we settled for looking around on our own ...
Town of Killarney In Ireland
At the Killarney National Park is also the town of Killarney. We parked in the centre of town and walked around for a while. What a cosy little town!
Flesk caravan and camping Park
Where did we stay? There are several campsites in Killarney, and we chose the one closest to town (1.5 kilometres from the centre). At Flesk Caravan and Camping Park we were excellent with good service and WiFi (which worked on and off).
Summing up this national park: What a great place!

So much moss on the trees, humid climate. Did you try a horse and cart ride?
13 May 2018 - 8:35
Helena says:
Yes, it rains a lot in Ireland! No, we did not take a horse and carriage ride, we settled for the horse ride the other day 😉 But it was offered just everywhere!

What is it like to drive and live in a lorry?
13 May 2018 - 9:32
Helena says:
It is very easy to drive (and park!) a small van. This particular one is very small (5.40 metres) - it was enough for this trip, but it is a bit cramped inside. If I were to get my own van, I'd want one that's a bit longer.

Ireland is absolutely fantastic. We have experienced the Ring of Kerry and surroundings once in just fog and rain, once in bright sunshine! I do not know which is the coolest! The magic forest that you visited is wonderful! It really sets the imagination in motion.
Enjoy the rest of your trip!
13 May 2018 - 10:12

Glad you visited the Ring of Kerry twice! We like sun, but fog is exciting in its own way...! 😉

What an imaginative fairytale forest.
I remember meeting many horse and carriage teams during my trip to Ireland. Charming and calming for the traffic rhythm.

Maybe there were even more horse and cart carriages back then? Now we have mostly seen them around Killarney, but agree that it is nice!

Lovely pictures and how green it is. So certainly Ireland attracts.

Fantastic posts from Ireland! I am reading and realising more and more that I was right in what I said when we were in Dublin: "next time I want to see a bit more of Ireland"...and there is no doubt that there will be a next time!

Helena says:
We have really fallen in love with Ireland! We might have to go back and see Dublin another time, because we don't have time for that on this trip 😉.
14 May 2018 - 1:28
BP says:
Yes, Ireland - the green island! Fantastic pictures although I think the wild rock formations were at least as "sharp" as the national park. Killsarney is so typical not only for Ireland but for Britain in general. So very cosy and I guess the picture is taken on the "High Street".
Special praise for installing defibrillators in the old phone booths. Talk about perfect reuse.
13 May 2018 - 22:25
Helena says:
I also liked the defibrillator! Great idea! 🙂
14 May 2018 - 1:29

What a wonderful trip you are doing?

Lena - good for the soul says:
Something absolutely beautiful! Incredible greenery! I remember thinking that there was unreal greenery in Hawaii when I was there a hundred years ago, but what the heck if that doesn't almost beat Hawaii 🙂 Maybe not quite, but not far from it. I can still imagine that the pictures are far from giving reality justice, as it usually feels.
