On Friday last week, Peter checked out the Norwegian Breakaway, a giant cruise ship that slipped into the harbour in Nynäshamn. He checked out the luxurious pools, checked out (some of) the 27 restaurants, and ... filmed a chef juggling kitchen tools. This summer, you will be able to see this luxury cruiser on the Baltic Sea.

Luxury cruisers on the Baltic Sea
Norwegian Breakaway is one of a total of five Norwegian Cruise Line ships cruising in Europe this summer. Last week, the ship cast off from Helsinki and then continued to Sweden and Nynäshamn. On Friday, Peter was invited there to look at the ship.
The ship Norwegian Breakaway will take nearly 4000 passengers on nine-day cruises on the Baltic Sea during the 2018 summer season. The cruises depart from Copenhagen or Warnemünde/Rostock and go to Tallinn, St Petersburg (with overnight stay), Helsinki and Stockholm (Nynäshamn).
Different price ranges on the Norwegian Breakaway
You can travel in different price ranges and stay in everything from small "studio cabins" for one person to the most luxurious suites in "The Haven by Norwegian". If you book a luxury suite, you also get access to the more exclusive areas of the ship ...
Even if you don't buy a luxury ticket, you can access the "adult area" with a pool and large video screen, where you can hang out whenever you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the pool. Younger travellers (11-16 year olds) also have their own space, called the Entourage Teen Lounge.
Worried about getting bored?
What if you get tired of hanging around the pool? Well, you might find your way to the climbing wall, the jogging track or the arcade. Just to give a few examples ...
There is also plenty of varied entertainment! In the 'Spiegel Tent' you can see aerial acrobats and jugglers, or perhaps a dance show.
27 catering establishments
There are no less than 27 dining options and 22 bars and lounges (including an ice bar!) on board. So there's plenty to choose from! Peter's favourite was the Japanese restaurant where the Filipino chefs entertain guests by singing, dancing and juggling eggs... while cooking!
Is cruising for you?
Cruising is interesting because opinions are often strong, for or received. We went on our first "real" cruise between Barcelona and Rome last September. A fun and different experience! We are happy to cruise again, but would like to try some other destination. Around Greenland perhaps? Even St Petersburg, which this ship goes to, would be interesting to visit.

That ship doesn't look too bad. I would have liked to try it 🙂

I have travelled on several Norwegian ships over the years. High class regardless of which cabin category you choose ?

How nice that you have experience with these ships! ? ?

Well... I don't think cruising is for me... 😉.
However, I think I will immediately go out and start practising juggling with the knives - looked really cool 😀.

Haha, I've probably seen you in a photo from a cruise ship 😉 Practising juggling sounds great ... but maybe practice with a plastic ladle or something ... 😉 😉

Cruising, yes, but not on "home turf" must be something more exciting to visit in the harbours.

Helena says:
Yes, best if you get to some interesting destinations of course! 🙂

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
No, no and no! I'll leave cruising and the artificial environments on board the ships to someone else. When we left Dubrovnik there were four large cruise ships in the harbour. I understand the problems for cities like Venice, Barcelona and Dubrovnik with all the tourists who come for the day and stay and eat elsewhere.

Helena says:
Interesting reflections! Generally speaking, I think tourists should be distributed a bit, sometimes it feels like almost everyone ends up in the same places, and it becomes completely overcrowded ...

We play from the same sheet of music, Britt-Marie.
Firstly, I don't understand the finesse of S T O R A cruisers.
27 places to eat! A 9 day cruise! There will be just enough time for
one meal at each food outlet (9 x 3).
I still wonder what happens to all the sewage
from 4000 passengers. 🙂

Nice ship but nothing that attracts

In the absence of a motorhome, we have taken a weekend in nice hotels. Everything has felt B, compared to having to clean a Concorde on two shoulders.

We have been on a few cruises in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Caribbean but these big ships, which in my opinion are mostly factories, do not attract us. Not at all. Know that there are ships that take between 600 and 1000 passengers and they suit us better.
We have some thoughts on a cruise with a "smaller" ship to cruise in South America, pass in the Panama Canal and be able to round Cape Horn. And on a cruise I want more time ashore, I don't want to rush to see things. In my opinion, having tested in the Caribbean, these large ships are mostly like "factories" and they do not attract.

Not a fan of cruises and never will be. But the decor on the ship was really fun.
Juggling knives is fun, but having a sushi chef from the Philippines would make my Japanese friend go crazy. Okay, so most sushi places have non-Japanese staff, but still.
The dance show is reminiscent of the Finnish boats. No, not for me.

Not on my bucket list. Yet. I am not saying never, but I am not attracted at all. I think it's too crowded, too big, too fancy. Can you even eat dinner in casual clothes or is it a jacket for dinner?

I'm probably more interested in a river cruise in Europe, but that ship didn't look too great....
