When we visited the Caravan Stockholm fair in February, we were given a review copy of Husbilsboken - for those who are new to motorhomes. Since then (as you may know) we have been busy and the book has ended up on a shelf, but during a cleaning at home I found it again. And now we have the opportunity to write a review.
The motorhome book - for motorhome beginners
"What is grey water? Where do you spend the night? Where do you get fresh water? How does the fridge work?" So write Sanna Ohlander and Torbjörn Lagerwall on the back cover of their book. And yes, we can agree that there are many questions when you are new to motorhoming.
The book goes chapter by chapter through the things you might wonder about as a new motorhome owner: accommodation, safety, water, emptying & filling, electricity, heating & cooling, LPG, winter, the kitchen, technology & internet and so on.
You get a lot of concrete tips and advice, while Sanna and Torbjörn write personally. They generously share their own mistakes and tell you what they do themselves, which I appreciate.
Easy to make mistakes as a novice motorhome owner
It's easy to make mistakes as a new motorhome owner/rental! Where can you stay and sleep at night? How does that work with LPG? How do you make sure the toilet doesn't smell? We have had the experience of running out of gas in the middle of the night and it took several years before we fully understood the heating system. Of course, you can learn everything by trial and error, but with the help of the Motorhome Book you can certainly avoid making all the mistakes yourself.
Do we agree?
Do we agree with everything in the Motorhome Book? We haven't read exactly every line, so we can't say for sure, but what we have read sounds sound, sensible and correct. In the chapter on the kitchen, the authors think mostly about the cheese, while we think the most important factor is that the food doesn't require too much space to cook (maybe because we have a good cooker hood). Small differences like these show that Sanna and Torbjörn write from their own experiences, which we like!
If you've had a motorhome for a few years, you might not need this book. If you are a new or fairly new motorhome owner: yep, lots of good and solid tips! If this had been available when we were new motorhome owners, we would have avoided a number of mistakes and life would have been easier. You can read more on the website husbilsboken.se and you can order it on Bokus, Adlibris or Cdon.com.

I imagine it's a jungle as a beginner and an informative book can be helpful!

We bought it immediately when we found out about it, then we had already ordered our car, but it was still a good support in questions we had afterwards. Now it is among the manuals for the car, thanks for the reminder, will probably take it out and browse a little and see if there is something I did not learn last time that I can learn now.

It takes time to learn everything... at least it did for us 😉 .

We probably would have needed it when we were new as motorhome owners. Now it had to be "trial and error", but on the whole it has gone well. We both had a past as caravan campers.

Trial and error works! But of course I would have preferred to avoid some mistakes ... 😉.

My owners needed this book when they rented a motorhome and had to empty the toilet cassette. When they stood there in Germany, they thought that the cassette was emptying slowly, then a Swedish neighbour came out and reminded them that while you are pouring, you should press that button, then it goes better...
Now I think my owners know these beginner things, but a book wouldn't be bad at all in the beginning.

I spontaneously think of the "PC for dummies" book series from many years ago. The motorhome book for beginners is a great idea. I know how much I liked the dummies series. I learnt so much.
