We have continued northwards along the coast of Northern Ireland, passing one view more beautiful than the other. The houses are quaintly cute, the nature is intensely green and just everywhere we see sheep and hear birds chirping. This green island is a fairytale in itself, but yesterday we decided to visit the fairytale town of Winterfell, which is actually a location in the TV series Game of Thrones. The fact that many scenes were shot here in Northern Ireland is not hard to understand!

Northwards Along the coast of Northern Ireland
If you read our previous blog post you know, we started our trip in Ireland in Dublin, and pretty quickly moved on to the small town of Rostrevor in Northern Ireland, where we took care of practical things like buying SIM cards. And then what? Well, we continued north along the beautiful coastal roads. Our destination was Castle Ward, where we know several scenes from the TV series Game of Thrones were filmed.
Delamont Country Park Camping
One thing that was really good about renting a motorhome through Bunk Campers was the inclusion of three catalogues of campsites in Ireland and a discount card for campsites belonging to the Camping and Caravanning Club. One of these, Delamont Country Park, happened to be close to Castle Ward, which is why we chose it. A really nice campsite, with helpful staff!
We didn't have time to look around the area properly (we wanted to see Castle Ward!), but if you want to, there is a large park with walking trails, a pond with birds, activities for children and various events.
Stops along the way
It was not far between the campsite and Castle Ward, and yet we had to stop several times. "A beautiful bridge!", one of us shouts. Or "look at the swans!". It is so incredibly beautiful everywhere, so sometimes it is difficult to move forward ...
Castle Ward - the castle where scenes from winterfell were filmed
Then it was finally time to see Castle Ward and the surrounding area, where several scenes from the TV series were shot. Game of Thrones were filmed. These areas have been used for filming scenes from Winterfell, where Robb Stark, King of the North, lives in the series. The castle itself was not filmed, but the castle itself is powerful and set in an incredibly beautiful environment.
Visiting Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland
When filming for Game of Thrones, it is at The Farmyard, which is also in the area. Even though we didn't clearly recognise ourselves from the film, it's very easy to understand why this area was chosen for filming. The old walls and towers look like something out of a fantasy world, and it's set in an area of fabulously green nature, ancient trees and intense bird chirping. If you're not interested in film, you can come here just to hike, cycle or ride along the various trails.

So intensely green, no wonder Ireland is called the green island, and what cool surroundings.
Now just wait for tomorrow's post and see what you find around the next bend.

Helena says:
We have also had time to think many times that it is no wonder that Ireland is called the green island. Sooo green everywhere! And yes, we are also curious about what is behind the next bend 😉.

Solan says:
A small question?
Are there no car parks on this intensely green island?
01 May 2018 - 8:52
Helena says:
We haven't seen any proper car parks yet, but we don't really know yet. Maybe it's different in the cities? For example, the campervan company said something about being able to park in Dublin harbour, but without service. We haven't really had time to check this out yet. We do know that "wild camping" is allowed in some areas, and one of the catalogues we have has more information about where you can go wild camping. No catalogue of campsites though, so I'm not sure if it's as widespread here. The campsite we are on now is actually similar to a caravan site with tarmac pitches by the sea, but is called a campsite and costs the same as a campsite (£22 per night).

Anna in Dubai says:
That's so cool! That a landscape that looks so calm and peaceful can turn into an action-packed TV series. But I suspect that the story itself probably looked the same (maybe some visiting Swedish Vikings?).
01 May 2018 - 10:32
Helena says:
History has probably not been entirely free of action ... There's a reason why they built all those high walls and watchtowers ... 😉.

Maj Ivarsson says:
Hello.
Seems super cosy there in Ireland. And to go around a bit with a "plåtis" is probably not completely wrong.
We have some thoughts about a flatbed. However, maybe a little bigger than the one you are travelling in now. Helena probably thought a little in that direction too. Continue to have a good time on your journey. Regards. Maj Jan and LOKE.
01 May 2018 - 12:17
Helena says:
Driving around with a lorry is perfect, we think! The roads are narrow, so it helps to not have too big a car. But yes, if we were to get our own flatbed, we would probably want it to be at least one metre longer. Then you have a little more space. Have fun!

What an absolutely marvellous cavalcade of images. So typically British views. Absolutely marvellous! Oh that Ireland is as green as it is because of the amount of rain the country gets year after year. But you seem to have timed your visit perfectly it seems - no rain and blue skies. What luck (and skill):-)
01 May 2018 - 19:14
Helena says:
Skill, of course! Haha, well, we'll probably get rain too 😉.
