Swedes do not want to travel here, according to a Sifo survey commissioned by Resia. However, Swedes are prepared to pay extra for these services, according to a Sifo survey by Ticket. What do you think of this week's travel news? Do you recognise yourself? Do you think the same as the Swedes in the surveys ... or completely different?

Fines for disturbing tourists in Amsterdam
Several European cities have tightened their tone against disruptive tourists and now it's Amsterdam's turn, reports The Daily Express. The new campaign is called "Enjoy & Respect" and encourages tourists (and others) to party, but to behave in a clean manner. Behaviour that can result in a fine includes urinating in public places, being excessively loud or littering.
Finnair adds flights to Dubai
Finnair is expanding its route to Dubai during the 2018/2019 winter season, which means there will be seven weekly departures between Helsinki and Dubai. In addition, two of the routes will be operated with larger aircraft (A350) to carry more passengers. In summer 2019, Finnair will also start flying to Hannover, Germany, with five weekly departures.
Azmara Club Cruises presents safari trips
When Azmara Club Cruises, which is part of Royal Caribbean Cruises, presents its news for 2020, several safari trips are included. "A Wildlife & Culinary Safari" departs from Johannesburg and ends in Cape Town, while "Wild Wonders of the World" runs through Zimbabwe and includes a helicopter ride over Victoria Falls. Other new additions to the programme include French Polynesia and Hawaii.
Swedes don't want to travel here
In a Sifo survey conducted on behalf of Resia for 2018, the question of which country you not wanted to travel to. According to the survey, Turkey and Egypt are excluded because they are perceived to be unstable, while Russia is excluded because of the country's leaders and its views on homosexuals. However, what is said in the survey does not always reflect our behaviour in reality, according to Resia. Swedes do not want to travel here in 2018:
This is what Swedes can pay extra for
More than a quarter of Swedish international travellers are willing to pay a fee for extra legroom. The same number of travellers are interested in buying additional meals on the plane, while entertainment on board, such as films, is the lowest priority. This is according to a Sifo survey from Ticket. This is what most Swedish travellers are prepared to pay extra for when booking an airline ticket:
- Meal on board (26 %)
- Extra legroom (26 %)
- Checked baggage included (25 %)
- Possibility to cancel the trip without a medical certificate (18 %)
- Seat reservation (17 %)

Ruth in Virginia says:
Not travelling anymore, but I have to wonder, why so many people want to
travelling to a place like Dubai. What's the draw? Tall buildings,
indoor skiing, super-duper expensive shops, beachfront ....
What? Thinking also of the workers, who are imported and treated
almost like slaves.
There must be some attraction that I don't know about.

Helena says:
We've actually had some similar feelings about Dubai as you, Ruth, but we haven't been there. I really don't know why it has become so popular. I think the airline tickets have been relatively cheap (while many iofs testify that it is very expensive on site). Then Swedes are always looking for destinations in the winter, where it is warm but not too far to travel. I believe that Dubai fulfils this last wish.

Ruth in Virginia says:
FYI / 13 Celcius in Herndon, Virginia.
BRRRRRR!

Helena says:
No, but huh how cold! We did have thunder and rain last night (after three weeks of oppressive heat), so maybe it will be cooler here now ... 😉.

Anette says:
I think like Ruth, why do we Swedes want to holiday in Dubai. I know that many people go there again and again.
In fact, I am also a bit conflicted about my second home country, for many different reasons.

Helena says:
Why are you torn about Thailand? Thailand is not very high on our wish list, but that's mostly because we've been there once and like to discover new things 🙂.

Veiken says:
I guess I'm not like other people, but I do agree with some things. I have become much more comfortable over the years and want to travel comfortably on flights. Especially when the journey takes many hours!

Helena says:
Flying long distance is uncomfortable, I can agree with that ...

We prefer to travel to Islas Canarias and Greece!

I haven't been to Dubai or Turkey so maybe I shouldn't have an opinion 😉 But yes, I have anyway 😀.
Turkey feels unsettled and at risk of terrorist attacks, but I have a friend who goes with her family to Turkey every year and has done so for the last six or seven years - since her youngest boy was a baby.
Now her family and her in-laws have bought a holiday apartment in Turkey, so for them it is quiet and a good destination.

Helena says:
I have also not been to either Dubai or Turkey, so same for me really. Would not feel worried about going to Turkey, but would perhaps at least check out the current security situation at Sweden Abroad ...

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
We probably agree with many people who question travelling to Dubai. I can't see anything appealing there.
I was a bit surprised that Thailand ended up on the second list. I've been a bit of a fan of India after a couple of trips there, but it seems that a lot has happened there in recent years in terms of crime and violence?
We've also become a little more comfortable over the years and are willing to pay a little extra for better legroom if it's a long flight.
04 June 2018 - 14:03
Helena says:
Both Thailand and India are places that I think you can hear very different opinions about. Everything from love at first sight, to never wanting to go there. I have never been to India, but I think it sounds exciting!

Anna in Dubai says:
Wow, so much negativity towards Dubai! I understand the opinions and they are correct in all good intentions. However, if this is the reason why people do not want to go to dubai, you should probably take a look at other popular destinations such as you mention South Africa - perhaps not the most innocent country in terms of human rights either. Thailand is surprising. I thought Swedes liked travelling there (also a country with a suspicious and oppressive government and kingdom).
04 June 2018 - 16:31
Helena says:
Very wise and good comment Anna! We have discussed many times the issue of not choosing countries because of the regime and always come to the conclusion that it is difficult. How many countries are there that do questionable things, from different perspectives? Then I think, just as you write, that we Swedes are not always so logical. We are used to travelling to Thailand, so we don't question in the same way as in other countries. It becomes a bit lopsided. You can think different things about Dubai, of course, but I was probably also surprised to hear so many doubtful comments here. Usually I hear many people who love Dubai and travel there again and again. (Although I may think that it seems to be a little too much skyscrapers for my taste, but who knows ;))

BP says:
Good with fines in Amsterdam! As my husband is 1.96 metres tall, we don't have much choice but to buy extra legroom.
Thailand was a surprise on the list. I know so many people who book trips to Thailand during the winter.
Funny about Ruth's comment about Dubai. My husband and I were just discussing that today. We were there before the building boom and my husband is glad for that. Personally, I also liked "former" Dubai, but since I just love skyscrapers and different buildings, I wouldn't mind going there again to compare.
Totally agree with Anna in Dubai. There are far more countries than Dubai that behave "badly". Qatar is a prime example of this, especially given all the scandals surrounding the contracts and construction for the 2022 World Cup.
04 June 2018 - 21:27
Ruth in Virginia says:
Absolutely correct, BP! How did Qatar get the World Cup?
Have read about a lot of fraud in FIFA. Big money!
Also agree with Anna in Dubai - countless countries better
is "bad" in many ways.
04 June 2018 - 23:45
Helena says:
The fact that Thailand is on the list is interesting. Lots of Swedes love Thailand and obviously go there again and again. But at the same time, Swedes probably have a bit of a "love-hate" relationship with Thailand. Some don't want to go there because "everyone" does, etc. Totally agree with you that many countries do questionable things ...

Ditte says:
We are happy to pay extra to fly comfortably, both on short flights within Europe and even more so on long flights. Good flight times and with inha or short stopovers are also nice. I think it has come more with age. Turkey and Russia I reject right now. Feels like other countries have more to give me right now. And certainly there are many countries that behave badly. Both in Europe and outside.
04 June 2018 - 23:05
Helena says:
On a short flight, I wouldn't pay extra for comfort, but on a long flight, well, maybe! It can be really hard to fly long distances!

Journey and journey are two words that are similar in pronunciation. The stories of the journeys are also a kind of flexible existence that is stretched out in different directions. Very fun to read about, I think.

Really different ways of prioritising.
Surprised at where Swedes don't want to go.
I've probably been away from the country too long to keep up.
Good to teach tourists how to behave, would make my job as a guide and tour leader easier. I have been through a lot, you could say.

Poor Amsterdam and other places! Sometimes you wonder why so many people leave their brains at home when travelling. Maybe they send it on holiday too? 😉 One year people working in the tourism industry where I live in Crete asked me: "Why don't Swedes say hello?". Boring! And what to answer?
