Swedes want screen-free holidays
61% of Swedes want to go on a screen-free holiday, according to a Sifo survey commissioned by Airtours. According to Swedes, the biggest advantages of a screen-free holiday are being more present (44 %), getting a break from social media (44 %) and having more time with family and friends (37 %). The two main disadvantages are not being up to date with the news (43 %) and not being able to read emails (26 %). Women are more interested than men in screen-free holidays.
Summer's hottest weekend cities
When we have such fantastic summer weather in Sweden, the demand for sun and beach holidays abroad decreases. Instead, shorter city breaks or weekend trips are prioritised, according to recent booking statistics from Ticket. Here are the most popular big cities this summer:
Record low prices for top travel destinations
According to a press release from Resia, travel prices are currently at a record low due to the lovely weather in Sweden. "The price for a week's holiday is currently from SEK 799 including flights and accommodation, which is absolutely crazy", says Lina Eklund, PR specialist at Resia. The most booked charter destination is Palma de Mallorca and the most booked destination with regular flights is London. Four trends right now:
- Rhodes is a winner
- Turkey attracts Swedes back
- Paris makes a comeback
Test families sought
The travel site Barnsemester.se is looking for test families who want to try out fun family activities for free, in exchange for writing reviews and rating the activities. To have a chance to become a test family, you have to take part in a beach ball hunt on the website. There are also three different competitions on the site, where you can win a boat trip on the Eckerölinjen plus hotel accommodation, entrance tickets and accommodation at High Chaparal or a weekend outdoor experience in Skövde.
Norwegian launches Stockholm - Orlando

Laughing a bit at the screen-free holiday... then the family can hardly have teenagers 😉 yes, a 12-year-old is enough 😀 without access to a mobile phone/iPad, Elin would languish... probably even her parents 😉.

I wouldn't be able to manage screen-free holidays either... I think many people have an idea about it, but would have a hard time implementing it when it comes down to it 😉.

Screen-free holiday? No thanks... Connect and relax :-).
For me, the quality of travel will be better connected..when I'm wandering around here in New York, for example, and want to check how I'm getting around..if I change my plans..order Lyft or Über...as a solo traveller, keep some contact with the outside world....
11 June 2018 - 7:50
Helena says:
I am like you in this case. I definitely don't want to be disconnected while travelling. Sometimes I use the GPS on my mobile phone and I often want to google sights. And of course I want to blog 😉 .

Johnny Friskilä says:
In an ideal society, such as one without war and where everyone is friends, Swedes would probably want a screen-free holiday. But when it comes to reality, it probably looks a bit different. It's nice that there will be a boat between Trelleborg and Klaipeda. I hope it will pay off financially.
11 June 2018 - 8:08
Helena says:
I think, like you, that the desire for screen-free holidays is more dream than reality. For most people anyway 😉 Also like that there will be more ferry trips to the east!

This spring/summer has been (and is!) fantastic in Sweden!

Glad that "old" Rhodes makes such a comeback! It was very popular in the 60s and 80s when the range of charter destinations was not so large. In my opinion, it is a very nice island. But on the other hand, Gekland has lots of even smaller islands that are absolutely lovely. We have started to think about a boat trip among the smaller islands again. Something we did many summers in the 70s and 80s.
We like to visit big cities in Europe, but not in the summer. Then I prefer to be in Sweden.
11 June 2018 - 8:58
Helena says:
We have never been to Rhodes actually ... Glad you write that it is nice! Boat trip among the islands in Greece sounds wonderful!

Screen-free holidays? No thanks! I actually have a blog to run 😉.
I wonder who they have asked? I don't think more than half of the people I know would want to be completely disconnected on holiday. If nothing else, there is plenty of information about the holiday destination(s) on the web, the possibility to book accommodation, and soooo much more out there in cyberspace that enriches the ongoing journey.
Screen holiday - yes please! 😀
11 June 2018 - 10:26
Helena says:
Haha, same here, I also have a blog to run 🙂 Yes, you can wonder who they asked and maybe also how the question was asked. You can understand that families want to have time to socialise without everyone hanging out at screens all the time, but completely screen-free, it becomes almost problematic ...

To screen or not to screen while on holiday; depends entirely on what it is used for.
It's great to be able to check departure times, book tickets, google activities and sights, and so on.
In between, it can be left untouched.
Sure, it's nice to have a weekend getaway in the summer, but I like to save big cities for spring or autumn.
11 June 2018 - 16:29
Helena says:
I myself like screens on holiday, but I can absolutely understand if you want to rest from them and have more time to socialise, for example. To completely remove it is tricky for reasons such as you write. Today we are so used to googling facts, opening hours, addresses etc.

Anna / Boihusbil says:
I want to use my screen. But I choose what I use it for. I want to be present all year round, not just on holiday, so I prefer to find a balance of use so it doesn't have to be either/or. That's what I think anyway 🙂
11 June 2018 - 19:57
Helena says:
Makes sense to me! I must admit that I use a screen a lot, but there are times when you want to rest from it. But I probably don't see any difference on holiday and otherwise.
12 June 2018 - 8:04
BP says:
Okay, I might be able to tolerate being screen-free for a week, but then the withdrawal would probably kick in with full force.
Yeah, the travel agents probably don't like this summer. The prices you mentioned are really crazy. I remember last-minute trips in the 1980s that were so cheap.
It's a pity that there are no ships to Klaipeda from Nynäshamn, but you can't have everything;-).
11 June 2018 - 21:14
Helena says:
Wow, impressed that you could manage a week without a screen! I wouldn't, unless I had to of course 😉 And no, for the travel agents this spring/summer must be a disaster....

Screen-free holiday, no thanks! Googling a lot on holiday, about sights, timetables, how dolphins sleep, the difference between crocodile and alligator, last time in Albania what ham is called in Albanian etc. etc. I wonder how many teenagers have responded to that survey? / Pernilla
11 June 2018 - 23:12
Helena says:
Haha, good example with the difference between crocodile and alligator! That's exactly what I google too! No, not many teenagers I would think ... 😉 ...

Travel Linda says:
Everyone seems to have an opinion about screen-free. Many people think it would be good, but hardly anyone takes the step! I don't believe in screen-free, the screen is largely an aid. However, I think it's great without a TV in the motorhome and have actually read a couple of books on the trip!
11 June 2018 - 23:20
Helena says:
I don't believe in screen-free either. However, if you have a family, for example, it can be good to ensure that it is screen-free from time to time so you can do other things. But not all the time, the screen is useful for many things too!
