Interested in hiking in northern Norway? The nature in the northern parts of Norway is wild and beautiful, with high mountains, mirror-like lakes, green forests and beautiful beaches. Here you can meet both wild and domesticated animals, such as reindeer and eagles, or perhaps find an old and really cosy café.

Hiking in Northern Norway
We are not really hikers. At least not the kind of inveterate hikers who strap on heavy backpacks and hike for days on end in challenging terrain. But we like being out in nature! Therefore, we were happy when we got a guide who could show us some beautiful places in the area around Bodö.
One of these places is easy to get to on your own if you know how to find it. However, if you want to embark on more challenging hikes, such as summiting, climbing, glacier walks or cave tours - you'll need a guide. Take a look at Nordland Turselskap for more information.
Mjelle outdoor area
The Mjelle outdoor area is beautifully located by the sea, and if you just want to walk along the coast to the beautiful sandy beach, it's a short and easy walk with beautiful views. Mjelle outdoor area is located a bit north of Bodö, just south of Festvåg.
Mjelle beach
Mjelle beach is a beautiful beach with intense red sand, surrounded by steep grassy mountains. The red colour is due to the fact that the sand consists of garnet, which can be used as jewellery stone. There are also marble rocks here.
Reindeer on the beach
We were not completely alone at the beach. We met a small group from Åland, who had managed to find their way here on their own. We also met two reindeer. Animals of all kinds are plentiful in this country!
Visit to Löp farm
After our short hikes, we made a visit to the centre of Löp Farm, which is located on the north side of the Bodö peninsula, about one mile from the centre of Bodö. There is a café here during the summer months, which is open on Saturdays and Sundays. You can also look around the old house, which is several hundred years old and was run by two enterprising single sisters.

Beautiful. Are you coming over to Lofoten?
25 June 2018 - 8:56
Helena says:
No, we are staying in the Bodö area during this trip. But I understand that Lofoten is also nice!

Ama de casa says:
I like hiking, but only on short day trips (and preferably on the flat 😉 ).
Hiking in northern Norway is a bit of a stretch, but I've walked a bit there anyway 😀.
Lovely pictures - like the roadsides 🙂
25 June 2018 - 9:15
Helena says:
We may have a similar attitude towards hiking 😉 But whether you want to hike short or long, easy or hard, it's great to do it here!

Renate's travels says:
Hehe, yes I have. 😉 So much fun to see pictures from your own neighbourhood. Looks like the weather was a bit better on this day too!
25 June 2018 - 9:29
Helena says:
Yes haha, I understand that you have hiked here! And fun to be able to show pictures from your home areas 🙂 The weather has been a bit back and forth, sometimes rain, but sometimes quite nice!

Mr Frank Olsen says:
Mjelle yes, wonderfully beautiful !
You should hear this one, the song about Mjelle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD95H_lWiEg
We have also hiked up there yes 🙂
We were "everywhere" in Northern Norway during our Europe-wide campervan trip.
And although it was very beautiful in Nordland and near Bodø, it is probably Lofoten that has left the deepest mark on our memories:

Haha, what fun that there is a song about the beach! Thanks for the link! 🙂 Lofoten is certainly also nice! We may try to see it too on occasion!

Helena - Oh darling, let's be adventurers (a Swedish travel blog) says:
Mjelle beach seems to be very cool, with the red sand. I have done two short day trips in Norway, one to a glacier lake and the other to a waterfall.
25 June 2018 - 12:31
Helena says:
Those sound like nice destinations for hiking trips! 🙂

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
Mjelle beach looks lovely and probably a stop on a new trip to northern Norway.
We like to hike and walk, but preferably without heavy packs and steep climbs.
I have hiked once with a tent and everything for 10 nights but I was 10 years younger.
If you don't make it to Lofoten this time, you have reason to return.
25 June 2018 - 15:22
Helena says:
It sounds tough with mountain hiking for ten days with a pack, but certainly an experience! And yes, we have reason to return! 😉

Maria's Memoirs says:
I definitely want to hike in northern Norway one day! I like to hike in general, in forests, mountains (preferably not too breathtaking cliffs though as I have some fear of heights), in bushland and coastal walks 🙂 Australia is a really good hiking country that can offer a lot of variety if you travel around to the different corners of the country.
25 June 2018 - 16:56
Helena says:
I can imagine that Australia is also great for hiking!
25 June 2018 - 21:05
Maria's Memoirs says:
In fact, the first picture reminds me a bit of my hike in Tasmania!

BP says:
Walking and hiking! Going for a long walk "over sticks and stones" is perfectly fine, but never with a pack. Great pictures, especially as it got sunnier and sunnier today. The reindeer up close - WOW! Then again, I like the houses with grass on the roofs. Delicious!
25 June 2018 - 18:53
Helena says:
I also like the reindeer, and all the other animals you see here. As well as the houses with grass on the roof, you also see quite a few of them.
25 June 2018 - 21:06
Kenneth Risberg says:
Today it has not been weather for hiking, misty and rain in principle all day. Have now stood still in Svolvaer. Going down towards Å where the road ends. Hope to get out in nature, maybe some coastal fishing.
Then there could be a ferry from Moskenes to Bodö at the beginning of next week?
25 June 2018 - 19:32
Helena says:
The weather has been a bit back and forth .... So you have driven in from Sweden and then plan to drive south in Norway, right? Nice that you come to Bodö! We missed each other unfortunately, but still fun that we were here almost at the same time! We also have more tips about Bodö, which we will write about soon!
25 June 2018 - 21:15

What great experiences you will have! I have previously hiked a lot both in these and other areas in Norway and these nature experiences are in my opinion hard to beat. And very funny that you got to try it out. Maybe it gives more flavour.
Very beautiful pictures from a beautiful country.

Amazingly beautiful! Love to hike, but day trips to avoid carrying too much weight. Have not hiked in Norway but would like to. Long time since I was in Norway now and we chose between Norway and Iceland this year but it was Iceland. Will also be really exciting!
