Where is our 2018 summer motorhome trip to Europe going? We plan to visit seven countries in Europe and lots of new favourite places. Peter has spent all spring planning the trip! At the beginning of July, we'll take the ferry to Germany and then we'll be heading to lots of new exciting places.
Table of contents
Brandenburg, Germany
When we travelled around Europe in 2015, we mainly drove along the coast. Now we are keen to discover the interior of Europe! We start with the region of Brandenburg in Germany. Here we plan to visit Templin, Oranienburg, Potsdam and New cell.
Western Czech Republic
We have travelled a lot in the Czech Republic before, but we have not been to the western part. Here we have several exciting places to visit, like for example Pravcicka Brana, Litomerice, Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne.
Austria
We would love to see Austria in the summer! We plan to visit Salzburg and Zell am See.
Italy
After Austria, we will continue on to the Italian Alps and then to the Umbria region and the Riviera Dei Fiori, located between Genoa and the French border. We also plan to visit places like Val Gardena, Chioggia, Perugia, Savona, Alassio, Imperia and San Remo.
France
We have spent about three months in France before and really like this country. France is a big country with many treasures, and we would like to discover more! Among other things, we plan to visit Cannes (again) and this time we want to see the island outside, which we missed before. Then we either head north, or down towards Hyeres, where there are supposed to be three incredibly beautiful islands.
Switzerland
We want to see more of Switzerland! We plan to start in Geneva and then travelling around Lac Leman lake and to the Gruyere, where the good cheese. At the end of the journey through Switzerland, we don't know whether to take the road through Basel northwards and see beautiful Colmar or through Appenzell northeast and pick up the cool castle Hohenzollern in Germany.
Belgium
Finally, it's time for Flanders in Belgium, where we are primarily aiming at pier, Ghent and Antwerp. We're really looking forward to our motorhome trip and writing about lots of new places. Hope you'll join us on the journey!
Ruth in Virginia says:
It will be interesting to follow you. I was in Zell am See in 1960;
group trip from Sweden with a friend. Flew to Munich and then by bus.
Came back in 1973, when I was travelling by train with my 11-year-old son and
his mate. What a difference! Tourism had changed the little town.
But Salzburg was the same. Nice city!
Group trip to Switzerland from Germany, where my daughter lived in 1984.
We stayed at the Vierwaltstättersee and did day trips. It was a
German group and in the bus Oompapa music was played all the time.
Help!!! - Looking forward to your trip. Hugs!

Sounds like a nice trip! It will be fun to follow you. You have found some places in Germany that we have not visited! Potsdam we know well though and you must of course see the San Souci park and the castles there. Historic Wannsee and the Bridge of Spies are just outside. Or what about Påfågeleön -Pfaueninsel, which we haven't visited yet. You must also see the city itself, including the Dutch Quarter.
Can also recommend a stop in Lübbenau, which was not on your list!
17 June 2018 - 8:50
Helena says:
Thank you very much for the tips on Potsdam and Lubbenau Linda!!!!

Denandraresan.com says:
Great to hear that you are going back to the Czech Republic! We have also planned to go to Marianske Lazne but a little later. We were in Frantiskove Lazne last year which is also a spa place but this should have more things. There is exciting water here because there is volcanic activity under the ground and it should be like a big underground sea. The water here is very rich in minerals.
17 June 2018 - 15:26
Helena says:
We like the Czech Republic! We have seen quite a bit of this country, but we have never been to this end of the country. Thanks for some info! 🙂

Only British says:
Wow! Can't wait to see what you think of Belgium where I have lived for five years. Our favourite fritkots were in Ghent and the best beer place in Bruges. Otherwise Ypres is very instructive.
18 June 2018 - 18:41
Helena says:
Oh, you've lived there for five years? Thanks for the tip! I have been briefly in Ghent (conference) but missed the fritkos. Ypres?
18 June 2018 - 22:01
Only British says:
Ypres is the name of the town at home in Flanders but internationally it is better known as Ypres after the French and therefore the English. Beautiful medieval town where some of the worst trench battles were fought during the First World War. Today the rebuilt, old medieval weaving hall has become one of the best museums I know: In Flanders Fields. At eight o'clock in the evening every night The Last Post is played at the memorial area at the Menin city gate where soldiers marched out to the front. Full of people who remember or just want to honour all the unnecessary deaths. You can go on guided tours of the battlefields and cemeteries too. One of the most beautiful corners of Flanders ironically.
19 June 2018 - 9:23
Helena says:
Ah, I recognise Ypres better! Thanks for all the tips! I will try to write some kind of list I think 😉 .
19 June 2018 - 18:02
Annelie says:
Hello!
Have been to many of the places you will be visiting.
Italy is close to my heart after Sweden and Singapore ;).
Val Gardena and the village at the top, Selve where we have been many times and hiked from in the wonderful mountains with via ferrata (cable). There is certainly equipment to rent and a quick course. Safer to walk with rope and harness than without.
If you have time, I recommend visiting the district of Piedmont and the villages of Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco are wonderful villages with the best wines in the world.
Lake Maggiore, with the town of Bavero, is also wonderful and there are wonderful truffle dishes.
Bologna the food capital and mecca. Absolutely wonderful old city and very good food and there are also 2 leaning towers.
Have a nice trip!
18 June 2018 - 19:21
Helena says:
Oh thank you for all the tips! I have to make a list of tips we got I think! 🙂 Hiking with cable sounds a bit scary haha, but ok, probably better with cable than without! 😉
18 June 2018 - 22:05

Hello?
It will be exciting to follow you on your journey.
It's not without getting hungry and getting the motorhome feeling?
Although I've only been in Sweden a few weeks since my last trip, which was great as usual?

19 June 2018 - 18:03
Monet says:
How nice that you have planned in France again. We don't really understand what you are going to do in Cannes and the "French Riviera". Expensive, snobbish, touristy and very un-French. There are plenty of other gems if you go from the coast and a few miles west to the real Provence. This includes Hyeres and outside les Iles d'Or, Porquerolles and Port Cros. I think I remember you being in the neighbourhood and staying on the Giens peninsula but missing the islands? If you talk to our good friend again, you may even be able to sail over and find some good form of co-operation, especially considering SAS's investment in direct flights from Kastrup to Hyeres during the summer. You are always welcome to join us in our picturesque medieval village. Refresh your memory and find useful Provence links on our website. http://hyrhusiprovence.com. Our tips have not been so wrong so far, right? Also check Sanary on more . Has everything!
19 June 2018 - 15:45
Helena says:
Many thanks for the tip Monet! Those islands you mention are exactly the ones we thought of. I do not really know what we will have time for, but I plan to write up all the tips country by country 🙂 Will check out your website too! 🙂 Thanks again!
20 June 2018 - 17:27
Bertil Larsson says:
When you're here in the south of France, I recommend a ferry trip from Hyères to the island of Porquerolles. If you walk a couple of kilometres west from the island's headland, you will reach the beach that was voted Europe's finest sandy beach a couple of years ago - Notre Dame. It's a good day trip because you can't bring your campervan - the island is car-free.
20 June 2018 - 8:51
Helena says:
Europe's finest sandy beach doesn't sound bad! 🙂 Thanks for the tips! That island is on our wish list now. Let's see what we have time for!
20 June 2018 - 17:29
Monet says:
PS. When driving around Lac Léman in Switzerland, reserve some time for Lausanne too. Wonderfully beautiful and charming city, less metropolitan than Geneva!
20 June 2018 - 11:47

Thanks for the tip about Lausanne! It's on the list! 🙂
