When we walked into the spa town of Frantiskovy Lazne in the Czech Republic, we were struck by the fact that the entire town was... yellow! Come with us to the yellow town in the Czech Republic, perfect for relaxation and spa.

From Loket to Frantiskovy Lazne
After a full day of treasures and castles in Becov nad Teplou and Loket we drove on to the spa town of Frantiskovy Lazne. We arrived in the early evening and for once chose to try a campsite, rather than a camping site, in the Czech Republic. How did it go? We'll tell you at the end!
Frantiskovy Lazne in the Czech Republic
Frantiskovy Lazne, or Františkovy Lázně as it is spelt in Czech, is the smallest of the three spa towns in the Czech 'spa triangle'. The other two are Karlovy Vary and Marianske Lazne, an elegant little town with spas, columns and leafy parks.

The yellow city
The first thing we noticed was that the city is... yellow! This may not apply to whole the city, but it definitely applies to the centre where the hotels, restaurants and baths are located. Every single house is yellow!

In the past ... and now in Frantiskovy Lazne
The spa town of Frantiskovy Lazne was founded by Austrian Emperor Franz I in the 18th century, and wealthy people, including celebrities such as Johann Strauss, Kafka and Beethoven, travelled here to improve their health. When Johan Wolfgang von Goethe lived here, he described the city as 'heaven on earth'.

Bathhouses in Frantiskovy Lazne
Even today, people travel here for spa and relaxation. There are several different bathhouses and many different treatments to choose from. We spent a few hours in the city and must say that there is a real sense of calm here. Many people walk or cycle in the peaceful surroundings. A more modern feature was the cartoon competition that was exhibited in the centre of town!

What happened to the car park?
The Czech Republic does not have a well-developed camping culture, so we usually choose to stay in campsites when travelling here. There are plenty of campsites and they don't cost more than a pitch in Germany, for example, so we find it works well. Sometimes you can still find "pitches" in the CamperContact app (which we use to find campsites and pitches), and these are usually regular car parks where you can park your campervan overnight.
Parking in Fantiskovy Lazne
In Frantiskovy Lazne there is such a car park behind the Bohemia hotel, with a three-minute walk into town. We paid 16 euros for a night here, and it may be cheaper if you have a motorhome that is lower than three metres (this was a bit unclear). There are also two campsites nearby, if you prefer to stay there.

Spa in the Czech Republic
Was there a bath?
There was no bath for us, neither in Karlovy Vary nor in Frantiskovy Lazne, but that's because we focused on the third resort. There we found an amazingly beautiful Roman bath (!) that we tried. Check in tomorrow and we will tell you more! Have you ever been to a health resort, or would you like to travel to one?

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
16 euros is a high price. When we were in Germany with friends who had a caravan, 20 euros was the highest we paid for camping with electricity.
But if you have access to electricity and other facilities, it's a good price.
Sometimes it's nice to take a shower and waste hot water.
What lovely parks!

Helena says:
I agree about the price! In fact, campsites in the Czech Republic are often cheaper than this, and then you have all services in the form of electricity, showers, etc. There are two campsites nearby and that might have been a better option. That is, then we would have gotten much more service for the money.
15 July 2018 - 9:47
Lennart says:
The town is similar to Brevens Bruk.
15 July 2018 - 11:50
Helena says:
Also yellow?
15 July 2018 - 15:44
Mr Steve says:
Even more beautiful buildings. I wonder how often they get to repaint the yellow houses.
In 2002, a year after my stroke, D and I went to Budapest on a spa holiday. It was nice to be looked after, even if the treatments were a bit rough for me. Still, it was good to try it out to see what I could do in my new situation.
15 July 2018 - 14:16
Helena says:
They must surely be painted from time to time! 🙂 Guess you can't suddenly paint a house in pink 😉 And yes, I remember you told me about the savings trip to Budapest!
15 July 2018 - 15:46
Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
How cool to have a yellow town, even the church!
I think it's starting to happen here at home too, that pitches with little service are almost the same price as a campsite.
15 July 2018 - 14:55
Helena says:
Yes, even the church 🙂 Both simple pitches and nice campsites are ok, but the price should preferably correlate 😉.

Maria / Magnolia Magis says:
Cool and fresh with yellow and white!!! Yes, spa and SPA I have been to... and worked on... ;D Trained SPA therapist... ;D but never been outside Sweden at a spa resort, which I would like to do! Exciting to see what you find tomorrow!

Helena says:
What fun that you are a spa therapist and have worked with it! Let's see what you think of the spa bath we write about tomorrow! 🙂

15 July 2018 - 16:50
Helena says:
A very nice city, and very close to the German border! 🙂
15 July 2018 - 19:41
BP says:
Do you know the reason why the whole city is yellow? Strange, but I must say it's very impressive. And the buildings are well kept and maintained.
Apart from Sopot, I have never actually visited a health resort. Today I always associate spas with old people and ailments so;-)
15 July 2018 - 21:10
Helena says:
I have no idea why the city is yellow, but it doesn't feel like it would be appreciated if someone decided to paint their house pink 😉 It's probably true that many older people go to spas, but many spas are more than spas and then it becomes more mixed.
16 July 2018 - 13:45
Ditte says:
Fun with this yellow city. Wonder if it is a coincidence or thought. But the houses look very well maintained. As for a pure spa, I do not feel any direct desire to go there, but I have tried some spas around Europe and Asia.
And even Sweden still has spas/sea resorts, although they have declined over the years.
Great to see where you end up tomorrow.
16 July 2018 - 1:10
Helena says:
Yes, now we roll on to the next country! 🙂
16 July 2018 - 14:02
Lena - good for the soul says:
How weird! Only yellow buildings! I wonder what the idea is?

Thank you for many tips, suggestions and info on the Czech Republic.
Will visit the Czech Republic during our motorhome trip in the last week of August and three weeks into September.
We think we will start with the Czech Republic and then drive through Austria and then spend a couple of weeks in Croatia and Slovenia before heading back to the west coast of Sweden.
Fantastic things to see and experience...but how can you do it all...?

Wonderful! Wish you a really nice trip! Finding time for everything you want is usually difficult 😉 .
