In collaboration with Vilaggio Albergo Il Gabbiano
Now we have spent two lovely days at hotel Il Gabbiano, just next to Lake Trasimeno in Umbria. We have relaxed by the pool and eaten super good pizza, and we have also had time to make a boat trip to the largest island in Lake Trasimeno, namely Isola Polvese.

Lake Trasimeno in Umbria
If you've been following our blog over the past few days, you'll have noticed that we've become quite fond of the Italian region of Umbria, and especially the area around Lake Trasimeno. The lake is full of small boats, and the surrounding areas are filled with olive groves, green hills and charming little towns with stone houses and narrow alleys.
Family hotel Il Gabbiano
The hotel Il Gabbiano, owned by three sisters of the Gradassi family, is located just north of Toricella at the eastern end of Lake Trasimeno. The hotel is easily reached from the main road that passes nearby, and you can come here either to stay at the hotel or to eat at the restaurant or pizzeria.
The rooms, which are relatively standard, come in a variety of sizes and can be customised with different numbers of beds for different sized families. Some are furnished with a kitchen and others without.
Lovely pool
The best thing about Hotel Il Gabbiano is the large, lovely pool, located in the centre of the hotel. In the intense heat, it has been really nice to spend a few hours here every day during these two days.
Pizzeria and restaurant with own vegetables
The olive groves around the hotel are family owned, and the hotel produces its own olive oil. They also harvest their own vegetables, so both their own vegetables and their own olive oil are served in the restaurants.
For our part, it was pizza at the pizzeria one of the evenings, and this is actually the best pizza we have had in Italy, thin and with really fresh ingredients. It was also noticeable that the pizzeria is popular because it was in full in the evening, both among the tables and in the neighbouring playground!
Incidentally, the pizzeria doesn't just serve pizza, but everything from mussels to meat dishes. We also have to say that we were a bit impressed by the detailed list of substances you may be allergic or hypersensitive to, and in which dishes they are found. The list is also available in a variety of languages.
Boat trip to the island of Isola Polvese
You can walk from the hotel to the lake, but the hotel's location near a major road makes it almost more convenient to make various excursions by car. We chose to take the motorhome to San Feliciano, a little bit south along the lake. There are three islands in Lake Trasimeno and we took a boat trip to the largest of them, Isola Polvese. The boat ride to the island only took ten minutes and we had to pay 6 euros per person for a return ticket.
Isola Polvese
The island of Polvese has a long history and was visited by both Romans and Etruscans. A castle and a chapel (San Giuliano) were built in the Middle Ages, and the island also has a monastery (Olivetans' Monastery).
There are plenty of birds on the island and a small water park, where different types of aquatic plants have been collected. We walked around for a while, but were quickly overcome by the heat and headed down to one of the beaches for a swim.
After the swim, an Italian beer and a tomato and mozzarella sandwich tasted good, before it was time to take the boat back.
Find hotels Il Gabbiano
Hotel Villagio Albergo Il Gabbiano's address is Via Perugina 67, 06065 Passignano sul Trasimeno (PG), but if you put it on the GPS, there's a good chance you'll get lost (it happened to us). Instead, it might be better to enter the hotel's name on Google Maps or some other similar map - that way you'll get there!
Incidentally, the family is also building an agriturismo three kilometres from the hotel. This place will have direct access to the lake and is scheduled to open for Easter next year.
We were asked to make a short film about their resort. Here it is!

Umbria has surprised us positively! There are nice places further south in Italy as well, but we will not go further south this time. We have of course heard about Cinque Terre, looks magical in pictures! Perhaps we do not think we have enough time to stay there, feels like you would like to have one or a few days on you then ...

The facility is absolutely superb, although I prefer the "stucco" in the hotel you showed yesterday. The pool is of course a real gem, especially since the Swedish heat now seems to have reached Italy as well; -)
Perfect, by the way, to combine business with pleasure. You make a drone film for the hotel and "get paid" with the pool and facilities offered by the hotel.
I'm glad you finally found an Italian pizza that was good. Because just like you, I have no good experiences with Italian pizzas. Good to know that they exist;-)
