Why not rent a motorhome in Italy? We are in Italy right now with our motorhome, and we have to say that this is a great country for travelling by motorhome. If you don't have your own motorhome, consider flying in and renting a motorhome there.

Why travel by motorhome?
We travel in many different ways, and certainly not just by motorhome. If you're going on a short weekend trip to visit a single city, it's great to fly and stay in the centre of the city before flying back home a few days later. But if you want to travel around for one or more weeks, then a motorhome is really ideal!
Renting a motorhome for a week may seem expensive, but if you look at the prices a little more closely, you can often recoup the cost very quickly. You can stay cheaply every night, and if you want to, you can cook and eat all your meals in your motorhome. This means that the cost of food might even be a little less. cheaper than at home.
Another advantage of a motorhome is that you don't have to plan much. If you don't necessarily have to go to a specific (very popular) campsite, you rarely need to book in advance. Plus, you can change your route whenever you want, if the weather is better in a different direction, or if a camping neighbour tells you about a new favourite spot.
By motorhome in Italy
Italy is perfect for travelling by motorhome. There are plenty of campsites here, and there are also a lot of so-called pitches. The campsites vary from luxurious holiday resorts with every conceivable service, to simple natural campsites for those seeking peace and quiet.
The pitches are often simple and automated, where for a small fee you can park overnight, while emptying and filling your tanks. The last campsite we visited was a simple and personal little campsite in the shade of the pine trees on Lake Trasimeno in Umbria for 19 euros per night.
Renting a motorhome abroad
If you don't have your own motorhome, you can choose between renting a motorhome at home in Sweden (or wherever you live) or in the country you're travelling to. Both can work well, of course, depending on your preferences. We have rented a motorhome abroad three times, and have been very happy all three times.
The first time we rented a campervan abroad was on the New Zealand. Then we rented the motorhome in Auckland on the North Island, travelled around for three weeks, and left it in Christchurch on the South Island. Very smooth! The second time we rented a campervan in Zagreb, to travel around Istria for three weeks. Croatia for one week. A fantastic trip!
The third time was in the spring when we rented a motorhome at Ireland and travelled around Ireland for just over two weeks. Again, an absolutely fantastic trip, and it was handy to be able to hire a smaller motorhome than our own.
Motorhome hire in Italy
If you want to know more about Campervan Rentals in Italy you can get help via Compare and Choose, where you simply fill in the dates and city where you want to pick up and drop off your motorhome via their comparison site. You'll also find a variety of travel options, no matter which way you're travelling.
Once you've rented your motorhome, you can experience the free life of a motorhome. You can stay overnight at campsites or pitches, or possibly free camp. You can visit beaches or cities, and you can change your route whenever you want. Travelling by motorhome is the freest way to travel, we think!
We have taken a break now with two nights in the same place, but soon we will be back with new reports from our campervan trip in Italy and Europe!

Helena says:
I see that I accidentally wrote that we visited that motorhome campsite in 2018, but we didn't, it was 2011 (corrected now, sorry for the mistake!). It is located at the northern end of Lake Garda, in Riva del Garda and was probably just called Area de Sosta Riva del Garda, or something similar.

I can agree that camping gives you a lot of freedom and it is very cosy too. But we went around with tents... It happened a few times that we flew down with the tent and some other camping equipment in the luggage, rented a car and bought cheap table and chairs on site. But that was when the luggage rules were not as strict as they are today.
Nowadays it's all about hotel camping. There are advantages with that too. You can always stay centrally, and now there are very many affordable hotels / motels / guesthouses as well (maybe not in Sweden though, but there we usually use the accommodation form "rape guest" 😉 ).
For longer trips, we usually bring the camping fridge, which works both in the car and in normal electrical sockets. Then you can take food with you to eat in your hotel room. Otherwise you can always buy a salad or something. In the long run, it can be nice to eat "at home" sometimes too.
Have a nice and happy Friday!

Motorhome life is really great! You can change travel plans according to the weather, or whatever comes up along the way, and you have everything you need with you.
Then it might be good to rent first to see if you like the camping life, or as we did; bought a small cheap motorhome to test.
Motorhomes do not exclude other ways of travelling!

Helena says:
Totally agree that motorhomes do not hinder other ways of travelling. We travel both by motorhome and by plane (and other ways) and like to combine!

Really a good idea to fly and rent a motorhome. Many miles are then saved and can be spent on the country instead - Have rented a motorhome in Australia and New Zealand. Have also campervaned throughout the USA in a Volkswagen camper, a fantastic adventure and also at a younger age camped around Europe. But that was it.

If you like motorhome life as you do, Italy seems to be ideal and well prepared to receive motorhome guests. If I were thinking of buying, I would definitely rent a motorhome on site first to see if I liked life on a campsite.

Italy is well adapted for motorhome tourists, we think. And yes, not bad to rent first to test! 🙂

Motorhome life is perfect. Now we have travelled around Iceland for 4 weeks, plus 3 days in the Faroe Islands and then a week in Denmark. We did not plan where we would stay in advance, but the weather and wind had to guide us.
We have rented a motorhome once and that was when we flew to Australia and New Zealand. The car worked well, but for popular places you need to be well in advance. We would have liked to spend 4 weeks in New Zealand instead of 3, but there was no motorhome available for that period. We were out 8 months before we left, but recommend booking earlier than that if you want some time. There are a lot of motorhomes to rent in Iceland too, but even there is a pressure, so you should book well in advance. Have a good trip!

What a fantastic trip you made to Iceland and the Faroe Islands!!! I have followed it with interest! 🙂 Good tip that in some popular places you need to be out in good time!
