The Rhine case in Switzerland - and a journey along the Grand Tour

In co-operation with Switzerland Tourism

We have now visited the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, or Rheinfall as it is called in German. This waterfall is Europe's largest and second widest, and here you can see impressive amounts of water flowing. To get here, we drove along the Grand Tour of Switzerland, that is, the beautiful road through Switzerland.

Grand Tour to Schaffhausen

Driving from Lucerne to Schaffhausen should not really take more than 1.5 hours. Now we chose to drive along Grand Tour of Switzerlandwhich is the beautiful road around Switzerland. When you follow the Grand Tour, you may not be in a hurry, but you can be sure to drive nice roads. This particular route took in both palm-fringed beaches and high mountains.

We'll tell you a bit more about how driving a car and motorhome in Switzerland works later on. For now we can mention the Grand Tour of Switzerland, which is an excellent route to follow if you want to see the most beautiful parts of Switzerland. There are both physical maps and maps to download to your GPS, but we have mainly followed the route by following the signs.

See the sign at the bottom right? That's the one you follow!

By ferry across a lake

"The sign points straight into the lake," I exclaimed when the "Grand Tour" sign did just that. At first I thought I had seen it wrong, but I had not. We were going on a ferry!

The Rhine case in Switzerland

Finally, we arrived at Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, which is the second widest waterfall in Europe at 150 metres wide and 23 metres high. We can agree that the waterfall is impressive, and we were here during perhaps the driest period in a long time. From what we understand, it could be very more water in the case.

You can walk around the area and see the waterfall that way, and there are also a variety of boat tours. We took the "yellow" tour called "Panoramic tour of the falls", which takes about half an hour.

The boat stopped at the small island in the middle of the fall, and there we and all the other tourists could take the stairs up for a view of the rushing water. There were plenty of tourists and some queuing on the stairs, but still great to experience the waterfall from the centre of the rapids!

When we went back, we drove close to the waterfall, so the water splashed into the boat. I was able to take a photo anyway, before I had to hide the camera under my shirt ...

Borgen Castle Laufen

At the Rhine Falls there is also a castle, Schloss Laufen. The castle is known since 858, when it was home to the barons of Laufen. The castle has now been renovated and there is both a hostel and a restaurant. I was most impressed by the elevators (you can see them in the centre of the picture!) that comfortably take people up to the attraction.

Plenty of fish

By the way, in the waters of the Rhine Falls there are lots of fish. We also saw a single small duck that tried to swim, but kept colliding with the fish when it tried to paddle with its feet ...
