Today we're sharing seven exciting and cheap weekend getaways for autumn. Many people have months of work ahead of them, and what better way than to plan a break from everyday life in the form of a weekend trip? We recommend seven destinations that all have a relatively short flight time and where prices are lower or significantly lower than in Sweden.

Exciting and cheap weekend cities
We have selected seven nice cities in Europe based on two criteria. The first criterion is that you should be able to fly directly from Stockholm (Arlanda or Skavsta) and that the flight time should not be too long. The second criterion is that the local price level should be lower, and preferably significantly lower, than in Sweden. The figure indicates the price index in relation to Sweden (where Sweden has 100) and has been taken from the Forex metropolitan index for spring 2018.
1st Riga, Latvia
Riga offers beautiful Art Nouveau buildings, wonderful spas, interesting shopping and many great restaurants that focus on local produce. With prices less than half of those in Sweden, you can also treat yourself to a little extra luxury!
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 1 hour 15 minutes
- Price index: 43

2nd Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn offers a beautiful medieval centre, but also affordable options for luxury accommodation. If you like to enjoy good food and spa, there are several hotels where you can relax and enjoy yourself for a few days.
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 1 hour 30 minutes
- Price index: 56

3. Gdansk, Poland
Gdansk is, in our opinion, one of Poland's most beautiful cities, and is also within easy reach of Sweden. Here you can browse the shops and enjoy the variety of restaurants in the city, while learning about the city's interesting history.
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 1 hour 15 minutes
- Price index: 41

4. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is a vibrant and exciting capital city filled with impressive architecture. For example, don't miss the very special Fisherman's Bastion, with its seven towers. In Budapest, you can also take advantage of wonderful thermal baths and enjoy yourself in one of the city's many so-called 'ruin bars'.
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 2 hours 10 minutes
- price index: 46

5. Warsaw, Poland
In Poland's vibrant capital, concrete buildings from the communist era mix with the beautiful houses of the Old Town. If you are interested in history, there are several interesting museums, and you can also visit the 213 metre high 'Palace of Culture'. Don't forget to try traditional Polish food!
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 1 hour 30 minutes

6. Berlin, Germany
Berlin is a city that attracts classic sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the 365 metre high TV tower. Of course, the city also offers city life, shopping and nightlife, and if you have time, you can take a trip to beautiful Potsdam.
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 1 hour 30 minutes
- Price index: 70

7th Rome, Italy
Rome must be the most romantic capital in Europe! Despite the fact that Rome is a populous metropolis, you constantly feel like you're walking around in a myriad of charming little alleys. You'll also have the chance to see places like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Vatican City.
- Flight time from Stockholm: About 3 hours

Have visited all except Gdansk and Warsaw. Of which Rome feels by far the best. 🙂
There will be no weekend for us this autumn, but in that case I would probably have hit London. Feels like too long ago.
22 September 2018 - 8:50
Helena says:
We also liked Rome very much! I haven't been to London since I was a language travel student, so it's been a long time 😉.

Lena - good for the soul says:
Riga and both Polish cities are on the wish list. How cheap it seems there then! Tallinn and Berlin are nice cities. I really liked Berlin a lot! That Rome was so cheap surprises me. There is so much talk about it being so expensive in Rome. Maybe people have different expectations. I was there as a child and would love to return. I hardly remember anything at all.
Hope you are not too dizzy after the night's winds!
Hug Lena

Helena says:
Prices are good in Eastern Europe. Then restaurants have also started to appear there that cost a little more. But compared to Sweden, it's affordable! It was quite windy in the morning. Last night I slept so I have no idea if it was windy, haha 😉.

Ninny says:
Gdansk and Berlin are cities that we have on our wish list to go to! Rome is an amazing city!!! We were there early spring (March) and became very fond of this city. If the criterion for price levels has not been included, I can recommend Oslo! A great city, well worth visiting! But unfortunately it is expensive ....
22 September 2018 - 9:06
Helena says:
Thanks for the tip about Oslo, I haven't actually been there. But, I understand that it is not a cheap city ... 😉.

Liniz Travel says:
Yes, so many good weekend tips! I actually have a girls' weekend booked in October to a new desti! Will be so much fun 🙂 my next weekends will be work trips to Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. No shame there either ...
My posts about different weekends are the most read right now actually!
Nice weekend hugs
22 September 2018 - 9:14
Helena says:
But what fun, where are you going in October then...? Curious 😉
22 September 2018 - 11:08
Ama de casa says:
Rome cheap? Hmm... It can be a disadvantage to live in a country where prices are so good - if you go abroad, most places will be more expensive... 😉.
As a tip, I can say Alicante - a fantastically nice city with direct flights from several places in Sweden. Good price situation too 🙂
22 September 2018 - 10:17
Helena says:
I understand what you mean by prices, Spain is quite cheap compared to Sweden. Thanks for the tip about Alicante! 🙂
22 September 2018 - 11:09
Husis blog says:
The owners and I have visited Gdansk and Berlin and like both cities very much. You have an advantage living so close to a major airport. My owners who live near a smaller airport don't have quite the same choice, but they can fly to Gdansk and Berlin.
22 September 2018 - 10:20
Helena says:
Yes, I am fully aware that for many in our country it is more practical to travel from other airports! Nice that you at least have some destinations that you can fly directly to! 🙂
22 September 2018 - 11:11
åsa/nalta norrland says:
Of these cities, I have only been to Berlin and would love to return.
It would be so much easier if there were direct flights from, for example, Umeå 😉.
Read the comment about Oslo, it's crazy expensive in Norway compared to Sweden... some people I know are training their dogs in the Norwegian mountains and they told me that food is very expensive.
22 September 2018 - 11:22
Helena says:
Understand that it is easier if there are direct flights! And yes, Norway is expensive compared to Sweden! We have not been to Oslo, but to Bodö.

Mr Steve says:
I have visited 4 of the 7. Weekend trips were something D and I often went on when we were working most intensively. Our absolute favourite city was Copenhagen and we have many wonderful memories from there.
22 September 2018 - 12:34
Helena says:
Not bad! It has been a long time since I visited Copenhagen. I would like to travel there again! 🙂

Ruth in Virginia says:
Never forget Berlin. The city was divided; it was the first week of June.
January. We were travelling with an American from W. Berlin to East Berlin. Cold
and wet. Boy, was I cold! Had to wait at checkpoint Charlie for over an hour. What a difference. V. Berlin was lit up for Christmas. Unter den Linden so beautiful. Ö. Berlin had big dark houses; nothing to do with Christmas.
Rode a small train and saw the barbed wire and rollers on top of the wall, which made it impossible to climb over.
I have not seen the "new" Berlin, but I have heard that it is as lively now as it was before WWII.
(got pneumonia after the visit)
22 September 2018 - 12:37
Helena says:
What a special memory!!! Thank you for telling us! 🙂 Berlin is really a city with a lot of history!

Renate's travels says:
Lots of great cities here! If you want to go on a cheap weekend trip, you should definitely head east. I would also like to recommend cities like Belgrade, Kiev, Vilnius and Tirana. 🙂
22 September 2018 - 13:12
Helena says:
Thanks for the tips! We also like Kiev! The others I would love to visit! 🙂
23 September 2018 - 7:21
Anna | Boihusbil says:
I haven't visited any of those destinations 🙂 So, we have a lot to discover. It is so wonderful that no matter how much we travel, there are always gems left to discover. Now we're in Northern Germany and will roll into the Netherlands in a few days.
22 September 2018 - 13:33
Helena says:
There is so much to see and experience in Europe, so you will probably never be "done"! And that's pretty nice 🙂 Nice trip!
23 September 2018 - 7:22
Ditte says:
Fun suggestions Here is Warsaw, which we have not yet visited. Just like Ama, I am in Alicante but we also think Krakow is worth visiting as well as Prague. Malaga also has a lot.
Rome is a great city but we didn't find it "affordable" to live or eat there. Was surprised by their index of only 64.
22 September 2018 - 14:10
Helena says:
Thanks for the tips on Alicante and Malaga! Index we just took directly from Forex, don't know exactly how they calculate it? We probably stayed quite reasonably priced there from what I remember.
23 September 2018 - 7:24
Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
We can tick off Budapest, Rome and Berlin, which each received two visits. We have looked at both Tallinn and Riga, but a city weekend has not been on the agenda for a while.
Vienna is on my wish list + a return visit to London (almost 50 years since I was there... Oh how time flies!).
22 September 2018 - 15:05
Helena says:
I would also like to visit Vienna! 🙂

BP says:
Have visited all but Budapest and Warsaw. Totally agree with you about the cities, but certainly didn't think Rome was cheap, rather expensive.
22 September 2018 - 19:18
Helena says:
Several people write that Rome was expensive, so one can wonder how Forex calculates the index? I don't remember that it was particularly expensive actually.
23 September 2018 - 7:26
Linda says:
Great tips, loved Gdansk now that we were there, Rome and Budapest are certainly not wrong either. Oh how I want to travel but unfortunately it is completely run this year. Have lots of events booked. But is so hungry. Next year, in the spring it will be Edinburgh with friends.
22 September 2018 - 19:57
Helena says:
Nice with Edinburgh trip to look forward to! 🙂
