What is it like to live in a houseboat in autumn? With the storms and the cold, living in a houseboat is a bit different than in the summer. If you ask me (Helena), it's not worse, just different ...
What's it like in a storm?
In autumn, the storms come. When we hear about an approaching storm, we check how strong the wind is supposed to be in the villages and, compared to people living in apartments or houses, we are very interested in wind direction. If the wind is from the south-west, we don't feel much at all. On the other hand, if the wind is from the north, the eggs we are going to fry slide down one end of the frying pan ...
It sounded like Storm Knud was going to be a bit unpleasant and we prepared for it, but nothing much happened. It just blew a little in the morning, and then it was over.
What do we do when the cold comes?
Many people wonder what it is like to live in a houseboat in the autumn, when the cold comes. There is no need for us, we can tell you! We have had the air heat pump running for a while now, and it heats the boat well.
When it gets even colder, we can switch on the boiler, which controls the underfloor heating (on the lower deck and in the living room) and the radiators (in the kitchen and bathroom). If it gets really When it's cold, we can also light the stove, but it has to be a real winter outside. The stove heats so well that we usually have to open the windows in the living room, no matter how cold it is outside ...
Every season has its charm
I like all seasons in the houseboat! In summer it is cosy with all the small boats and canoes around, and all the people crowded on the outdoor terrace of restaurant K4. In winter the snow is beautiful, and the quiet calm is nice. What is your favourite season?
Anna | Boihusbil says:
It's great that you have multiple heat sources. How do you keep the water from freezing around the boat?

Helena says:
The marina has propellers in different places in the water, so that it doesn't freeze 🙂.

Evy Knoph says:
It actually sounds quite cosy...if you don't get seasick....
Really like all seasons... when I was younger, autumn always felt like a time for new beginnings... and yes that a new handball season starts is great :-). Winter can be hard... scraping windows... slipping... the snow can stay in Norrland type... but I have always loved skiing... even though it was a while ago due to bad knees....
I am not a beach/pool person but I like summer more and more nowadays....
25 September 2018 - 7:25
Helena says:
It usually swings very little. Surely autumn can feel like a season for new beginnings! 🙂

Hasse says:
Hi guys, do you need to do any kind of external service on the boat. By the way, Knud came from the southwest, but even here on the southern west coast the winds were at most around 20 m/s.
25 September 2018 - 7:36
Helena says:
Yes, we do need to take care of the boat sometimes. Maybe the hull should be checked every seven years or so.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
The changing seasons are the charm of our country. Then there may be a beautiful autumn with blue skies and dark evenings, a cold winter with white snow, etc.
If there's one thing I don't like, it's strong winds, especially when combined with rain, but unfortunately we'll probably see more extreme weather.
25 September 2018 - 8:08
Helena says:
Extreme weather is not always pleasant, and you don't want more of it after all ...

Maria/ Magnolia Magis says:
How wonderful with a stove! I miss the living fire on chilly winter days! Of course it is nice to have different seasons, everyone has their charm. I probably like autumn and spring best when it is warm enough. The peace and quiet. Now we will go and buy some flooring for the awning so we can stay out there as long as possible. Have a good day! ?
25 September 2018 - 8:38
Helena says:
Perfect with a floor for the awning so you can be outside for a long time! 🙂

Emma, sun like sun? says:
I love the seasons and it was something I was afraid I would miss out on when we moved to Spain and the Costa del Sol. But it's not a clear blue sky here with 30 degree heat all year round. No, it actually changes quite a bit with some trees shedding their brown leaves (they don't change red) and standing naked during the winter. Pouring rain, rough weather, winds. Winter here is like a harsh autumn day or a beautiful spring day, actually. Autumn has arrived but we had almost 34 degrees yesterday!
It sounds like you've accidentally put a sauna in there with the stove! 😀 It's absolutely fascinating to see how "ordinary" the home is in a boat. But still not ...
Sitting and thinking about the wind, rocking in the boat. Do glasses and cups often come off the table? Do you have plastic or metal glasses? We actually have a bunch of plastic glasses/mugs (which you got when you bought Pågen's bread a lot of years ago, they had to come with us when we moved, perfect to have in the car on the way down) and they are used a lot by my husband and son. Perfect when you have hard floors or in the picnic basket.
25 September 2018 - 8:38
Helena says:
Nice that you also have seasonal variation! But 34 degrees, help what heat!
Since the boat is in a marina, there is not much rocking. A storm is definitely felt, but not so much that things fall to the floor (a single item that has been placed at the far end of an edge perhaps, but not otherwise). So we have ordinary glasses and ordinary crockery.

Mr Steve says:
It's great to have a "home" post from you again.
"It doesn't get worse, just different", which is how I usually try to think about the changing seasons here at Getingstorp.
The last two images, what wonderful contrasts.
No, there's certainly no need for you. Goodbye!

Ama de casa says:
The parts of the year I like best occur at slightly different times in spring and autumn. These are the parts when you do not need to run AC and/or fans, either to make heat or cold. Then it is best both outside and inside 🙂
Just like with Emma on the Costa del Sol, the HOT air is still lingering here on the Costa Blanca. It is over 30 degrees during the day still. Around 25 I think is best 🙂
25 September 2018 - 10:16
Helena says:
It sounds like you are still a bit too hot. Heat is nice, but there are limits 😉.

I can imagine that houseboat life is basically like boating and we have experience of that. However, you have more space and a little more amenities. you You also lie still but many other things move around you. We liked boating, but everything has its time. And now we live on the quay and can take part in much of what you can but in a boat.
I understand that you are enjoying yourself.
25 September 2018 - 14:08
Helena says:
You also live nicely by the water! And our houseboat crank might be a cross between your boat and your accommodation 😉.

Veiken says:
Winter is definitely not for me. Can be beautiful on postcards. Avoiding winter and cold as much as I can!
Your houseboat is really cool .... Nice accommodation most of the year. See above ?

Helena says:
Then you're doing the right thing, as you often travel in the winter! 🙂

TravelAnna says:
Interesting to hear about how you keep the heat! 🙂 I previously met Peter here at Travel Media Day and actually asked the opposite: how you do when it gets too hot. He then told me about the air heat pump that can be used in different ways. 🙂
Sure, every season has its charm, but I'm mainly a summer person! However, I wouldn't want summer all the time.
25 September 2018 - 15:31
Helena says:
How nice to see you today at Travel Media day! 🙂

Husis blog says:
There are charms to all seasons, but I never get to experience the charms of winter. However, when the sun shines so beautifully and the windows in my winter home sparkle.
Today I have experienced a lovely autumn day. The tree leaves are starting to turn yellow, nice clear blue sky with a nice sun and lovely air.
Summer, yes heat loves both me and the owners.
Spring, when all the trees' buds begin to open.
There is so much to write, but something that both me and the owners dislike is cold autumn and spring days with rain and wind.
25 September 2018 - 18:49
Helena says:
There is a difference between sunny autumn and spring days and rainy ones!

So you've probably had to think pretty hard last week and again this week - which way the wind is blowing. But as far as the impending cold is concerned, there is absolutely no need for you to worry.
25 September 2018 - 20:21
Helena says:
No, cold is definitely not a problem! We'll keep a closer eye on the storm 😉 .

Ruth in Virginia says:
"Autumn has come, hear the storms howl.
The swan says goodbye, and the swallows flee.
The flower has made its grave in the moss.
The waves roar on wild seas..."
We sang that song (in a minor key) every autumn at school.
I have always liked autumn. Likes autumn clothes
and colourful leaves. Longed for the school to
start. - Winter at this latitude is either mud or ice.
Summer is hot and humid. Spring is wonderful.
Glad I don't live on a boat, but the view is nice all year round. 🙂
25 September 2018 - 21:51
Helena says:
Oh, I recognise that song! But I haven't sung it myself ... Grief or ice in winter is not the most fun.

Lena - good for the soul says:
You don't seem to be in any distress. Not that I thought so either. 🙂
I like both summer and winter. But if I had to choose, it would be summer because you don't have to wear all these clothes then!

Maria's Memoirs says:
How nice that you do not have to freeze ever, but it sounds a bit exciting to live on a boat during a storm! Here it was really windy last night, and the corner of the house where my bedroom is located seems to be quite exposed when it comes to strong winds, so last night I woke up almost every hour because the wind grabbed the house so much that the roof plate rattled and the whole bedroom kind of vibrated... But everything was kept in place thankfully!
