A few days ago we summarised the great nature experiences from this summer's motorhome trip, and now it's time to summarise the great cities. We've picked out 12 cities from this summer's trip that we like - from hectic and exciting big cities to cosy little towns in the countryside. Have you visited any of these? Which one would you most like to see?

Fantastic cities
We experienced many amazing cities during our two-month campervan trip through seven European countries. Here are our 12 top tips for those who love city life. Don't miss reading about 12 amazing nature experiences while travelling!
1. potsdam
GermanyPotsdam, just outside Berlin, really surprised us with its amazing architecture! Most fascinating is the magnificent Sansouci Palace, but it's also fun to walk around buildings inspired by China, Russia, Italy, Scotland and Holland...
2. trier
GermanyThe German city that perhaps impressed us most was Trier in the Moselle Valley. A Roman city was founded here in 16 BC and a whole host of Roman monuments remain from this period. These include a grand city gate, an amphitheatre, several Roman baths and a bridge that is still in use.
3. Karlovy Vary
Czech Republic: Karlovy Vary took us by storm and we quickly named this city the most beautiful city we have seen. ever. It feels almost unreal to walk around among all the beautiful 18th century houses, parks, fountains, columns and spa baths. Of course, the fact that the price level is humane in the Czech Republic also makes the experience easier!
4. litomerice
Czech RepublicLitomerice is a relatively unknown small town, but a nice one! We liked the beautiful houses with arches at the entrances, the churches, the castle just outside and the campsite located within walking distance on the river right next to it. If you are interested in history, you can visit the Theresienstadt concentration camp nearby.
5. Salzburg
AustriaSalzburg is an incomparably beautiful city, with all the grand buildings, the river running through the centre and the high mountains in the background. Much of it is centred around Mozart, and the classical music fits in perfectly with the surroundings. If you want, you can also take a dramatic cable car ride to the top of Untersberg.
6. Chioggia
ItalyChioggia is for those who want to experience the charm of a city like Venice, but without all the tourists of Venice. Just like Venice, this town is full of canals, bridges and boats, and of course beautiful old houses along the waterways. There are also plenty of nice outdoor cafes and long sandy beaches in nearby Sottomarina.
7) Cannes
FranceIn Cannes, there's the exclusive life of luxury yachts and champagne bars, but there are also romantic neighbourhoods in the old town and plenty of shops and restaurants for ordinary wallets. There's also a sandy beach in the centre of town, and you can also take a boat trip out to the beautiful island of Sainte-Marguerite just outside.
8th Bern
SwitzerlandFor a capital city, Bern feels surprisingly small and convenient. Bern is the city of a hundred fountains, a fascinating old clock tower that still works and a beautiful green-blue river where you can actually swim. Albert Einstein once lived here and you can visit his house in the centre of town.
9. Lucerne
Switzerland: We fell in love with Lucerne, with its river and its beautiful old covered wooden bridges from the 13th and 14th centuries. The city's location on a beautiful lake and surrounded by dramatically high mountains doesn't help matters. If you want, you can get a magical nature experience by taking the steep train up to the top of Mount Pilatus.
10th Appenzell
SwitzerlandAppenzell is a very small town, but we still want to mention it because it has so much to offer! In addition to very interesting democratic processes, you can see charmingly decorated houses and sample local specialities such as cheese and beer. Just outside is the Hoher Kasten mountain, on top of which there is a revolving restaurant.
11. pier
BelgiumBruges is an insanely charming city filled with canals, bridges and medieval buildings. Everything is within easy reach and you can choose whether to explore the city on foot, on a boat trip or perhaps by horse and carriage. The brewery De Halve Maan, which organises guided tours, is located in the middle of the city.
12th Ghent
Belgium: Ghent is not nearly as well known as a tourist city as Bruges, but in its own way it has just as much charm. This city is also full of canals, bridges and beautiful medieval houses. At the same time, you can tell that this is a vibrant and active city, full of students and with a nice, relaxed atmosphere.
Husis blog says:
The owners realise that they still have many years to go to make use of all the tips they receive. On your list, they have only seen and experienced Cannes and there they agree with you. The fact that you can also swim there is always a plus because these are often the cities my owners stop at. They often get enough inland in their hometown.

It is just to realise that there is a lot left in Europe to discover and I must say that the Czech Republic is very attractive. Have only been to Prague, and there is a little more to see...;)

Prague is nice, but it's true that the Czech Republic is much more than just Prague!

I just realise that I still have a lot to discover and that it probably won't be all these amazing cities. Soon I'll be down in southern Germany again tasting wine, for me a bus journey is perfect.
Happy Saturday 😀

So many wonderful and interesting cities you have visited! I myself have been to numbers 1, 2, 7, 9, 11 and 12. I liked Potsdam best. Partly for the fantastic castle, partly for the city's interesting history. Trier was also very nice. The simple truth is that there are so many interesting places!
08 September 2018 - 11:31
Helena says:
It was not bad! And totally agree with you on the conclusion, there really are so many places to discover in Europe!

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
Agree with all comments; so much there is to discover in Europe!
We can tick Trier and Salzburg off the list, but Salzburg is so long ago that it's probably time-barred!

Helena says:
Europe is amazing in that way! So much culture and history!
09 September 2018 - 6:49
Lena in Wales says:
I have been to all the places except Litomerice and Chioggia, so maybe some of these would be interesting. Otherwise, Salzburg is one of my favourites and Bruges is also beautiful and I really like Potsdam. Can't choose ONE, unfortunately!
Have a nice weekend!
08 September 2018 - 16:01
Helena says:
That's not bad Lena, considering that we might not have chosen the most "common" countries! And I would also have a hard time choosing ONE of these... 😉 ...

Eva - People in the Street says:
What exciting places? I have probably only visited one of the cities.
Live and feel!

We try to find interesting places, which are not always the most common ones to visit 🙂.

Ditte says:
What a nice summary you have made. Great info as well. Eight of the cities I have visited (Salzburg, Cannes, Bern, Luzern, Bruges and Ghent. And on the way to Theresienstadt we passed near Litomercie. I have not travelled much in Germany and only visited Berlin and a few more cities in the north and south. Has never attracted me. But Trier and Potsdam might be something. But since we don't have cars, they are not high on the list. Chioggia in Italy appeals most. And a new turn in France and Switzerland. I am also keen on the railway between Vienna and Venice.
08 September 2018 - 18:53
Helena says:
Not bad Ditte! The railway between Vienna and Venice sounds exciting! 🙂

A great summary and "mix" of cities that all have their charm, each in their own way so to speak.
Europe really has a lot to offer besides all the tourist traps. Oh you have really found many gems:-)
08 September 2018 - 18:56
Helena says:
That's the great thing about Europe, there's so much to discover next to the most touristy places! 🙂

Reiselinda says:
Have visited Potsdam and Trier, also lived for six months in Potsdam. Also landed in Bern once, it was a cool approach, but we went straight on! Several of the cities are already on the list, and I almost think the list grew a little now too...
08 September 2018 - 20:20
Helena says:
I understand that you had time to visit the German cities! 🙂 And it's always easy for the list to grow ... 😉.

So much good inspiration! I've managed to miss all these cities so far so it's great to get tips on new places. Chioggia, Salzburg and Bruges probably attract the most of all these places.
