Today we can tell you about the most popular destinations of the winter and the travel trends of 2019. In addition, we can tell you about a new campsite to be built, about several new direct flights from Gothenburg to Europe and about Halloween at Gröna Lund. Time for this week's travel news!
Table of contents
Sustainable camping on the High Coast
A new campsite will be built at the Smitingen seaside resort at High Coastby the camping chain First Camp. The company now has two years to study the conditions, and the plans include around 300 camping pitches, a centre building with reception, shop, restaurant, service building, motorhome pitches and 30 camping cabins. All First Camp destinations are, or are undergoing certification to become, eco-labelled with Green Key.
More direct flights from Gothenburg
In April 2019, the airline Laudamotion will start flying directly between Gothenburg (Landvetter) and Stuttgart, twice a week. Another news is that Ryanair will start flying directly from Landvetter to Dublin from the summer season 2019. Earlier news has been that SAS is starting to fly from Landvetter to Faro in Portugal from summer 2019, and Ryanair will start flying directly to Manchester, Prague and Barcelona.
Halloween has opened at Gröna Lund
Halloween at Gröna Lund has been open this weekend and is also open from 26 October to 4 November. The biggest novelty is the "Skeppet", an oriental ship that has docked at Gröna Lund and is said to carry a thousand-year-old curse. If you dare to go on board, 750 square metres of horror await you, including a 200-metre-long maze. There are nine horror attractions in total, as well as an area adapted for younger children.
Where Swedes are travelling this winter
Swedes' appetite for foreign travel took a hit after the hot summer of 2018. The decline in demand continues for winter travel, which is down by 14.5 per cent according to Ticket's major trend report Ticket Collection. Spain is still the most booked country, and Thailand is close behind. Here are the winter trends:
- Winter's most popular destination: Gran Canaria
- Winter's big winner: South Africa
- The rocket of winter: Egypt
- The newcomer of the winter: Gambia
How we are travelling in 2019
Booking.com has gathered guest reviews and surveys from 21,500 people in 29 countries and found the following travel trends for 2019:
- Combining travel with work - More volunteer trips, working holidays and cultural exchanges
- It should be smooth - Preferably smart technical solutions and perhaps a "virtual travel agency".
- Look out for unexplored territories - Dreams of space travel or perhaps spending the night under the sea?
- Personalisation at its best - More customised travel information is desired, perhaps using AI technology.
- Focus on conscious travelling - Questions about social, political and environmental conditions in the destination become important.
- Time to ditch plastic - Reducing the use of plastic, including litter picking on beaches.
- In search of experiences - Authentic experiences, ranging from favourite sports to more playful elements.
- Making the most of the little things - More short weekend trips, with maximised experiences, for example in the form of unique accommodations

We have only one weekend in Sundsvall in the calendar going forward. Will certainly be more, but will probably be quiet until New Year at least due to lack of leave to take out! Doubtful that it will be any of the places listed, but we will see! In any case, I have started thinking about the plastic, and in our geocaching hobby we actually have events where we meet and pick up rubbish in nature.

Helena says:
All trips do not have to go so far, Sundsvall will certainly be nice! 🙂 What a good initiative to pick up rubbish! Sad that it is needed, but good with such initiatives in several places!

Nice with some new direct flights from Landvetter. When we search for flights, the best and most affordable ones often go from Arlanda (Dublin direct does not sound wrong).
Our winter trip to Mexico was booked before this extreme summer and now only three weeks remain until departure!!!!

Dublin is a nice destination! 🙂 And how wonderful with a Mexico trip to look forward to!!!!

It will be an incredibly large campsite. Great fun! More summers like this one...
I've never heard of Laudamotion, but suspected that F1 driver Niki Lauda had a hand in it, which he may have. Nice that the West Coast is "favoured" this time.
Gran Canaria was no surprise, but South Africa is. Fun!

We would also like to visit South Africa. High on the travel list. I have visited Egypt a couple of times and Gambia as well but do not really want to travel more. And was not surprised by Gran Canaria.
The High Coast is a favourite even though I don't camp. So fun with some extra camping space there and by the sea.
