This weekend we visited a Persian restaurant in Stockholm, namely Tehran Grill on Rörstrandsgatan in Vasastan. It was only supposed to be a lunch, but it happened to develop into a very nice dinner with starters, main course and very nice socialising.

At a Persian restaurant in Stockholm
Last Saturday we met our friends Lennart and Beata in Vasastan for a late lunch (which soon "degenerated" into a dinner). I have walked past Tehran Grill on Rörstrandsgatan several times, and I have actually had a weekday lunch there once.
That lunch was a real crowd pleaser, and when I suggested Persian food, or Iranian food as you might also say, everyone in the party was on board. It looked very crowded inside Tehran Grill so we were unsure if we would get a table, but we only had to wait a few minutes and a table became available.
It feels really nice to step into Tehran Grill. On the walls are photos, probably from Iran, where my eyes are caught several times. One photo shows a woman in a veil with a camera and another photo shows a scantily clad woman in a 1950s swimsuit. Maybe before the revolution? The atmosphere in the room is great, and people are talking and laughing. If one were to complain about anything, it might be that the volume is quite high.
Starters
We were super hungry and couldn't resist ordering a bunch of delicious starters. We ordered one of what was called "Two small starters for two" and one of what was called "Three small starters for two", which resulted in the table being filled with small plates. We were served Persian cheese with vegetables and walnuts, small pies, aubergine scrambles, vegetable scrambles and marinated olives. This was served with super good bread. Sooo heavenly good!
Main dishes
I (Helena) and Beata each chose a casserole. She chose a stew with lamb, yellow lentils, aubergine, spinach yoghurt and berberi rice and I chose a stew with chicken thigh fillet, walnuts, cucumber yoghurt and saffron rice. Really good!
The men in the party were hungry and chose two kebabs, with lamb sirloin and saffron-spiced minced lamb. In retrospect, I think at least Peter would have preferred a stew actually. We who chose stew were probably more satisfied. In any case, it was delicious!

It sounds and looks very nice.
Lamb and sheep in all forms are a no-go for me, but there are other things! ?

Helena says:
I understand that some people don't like lamb. But there are other things 🙂

Kenneth Risberg says:
Looks very nice and a lot to choose from. Maybe I'll look for this restaurant when I'm in Stockholm for most of December.

Nice place 🙂

Johnny Friskilä says:
I made the fesenjan myself once. However, it was not a Swedish chicken thigh fillet, but I stood with scissors and cut up a whole goose. Then I just boiled walnuts and pomegranate juice until the fat starts to come out of the walnuts. It was very good! 🙂
27 November 2018 - 9:28
Helena says:
Wow, how fun that you made this yourself! Sounds a bit advanced ... but delicious! 🙂

Ama de casa says:
Oh! I love Persian food! My absolute favourite is probably the lamb skewers. And the rice... Mmm... When we were on holiday in Iran in 1995, I probably lived mostly on rice - wonderfully good!
🙂

Helena says:
I also want to go to Iran! 🙂

Maria/ Magnolia Magis says:
It is nice with many small dishes so you can try a little of each! No, we have not been to a Persian restaurant. I am probably a little too cowardly for that, but with small dishes maybe it would work. Should avoid nuts due to allergies and strong food protests the stomach... Hence the cowardice... But what fun that you could take time to enjoy food and friends!!!! Not just a quick lunch then. ??
27 November 2018 - 11:39
Helena says:
Understand that you have to be careful with nuts and strong foods! Does it work to ask? (What we ate was not spicy, but there were nuts in my dish).
27 November 2018 - 19:38
Maria/ Magnolia Magis says:
Unfortunately, I have been to a bakery and ask if they have anything without almonds and nuts. The clerk says yes and points to the princess pastry.... What is marzipan made of I then asked... Almond pulp... Almond... So of course I ask! ? Anyway, it looked very good your lunch!?

Ditte says:
We have visited Teheran Grill on Timmermansgatan and it was both delicious and pleasant. We like the concept of ordering many dishes to share. We ordered a table when we went here because we were a party of eight and then it can be more difficult to get a seat. Maybe Teheran Grill on Rörstrandsgatan will also get a visit.

Helena says:
Glad you've been to the one on Timmermansgatan! 🙂

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
It looks so good, especially all the small dishes you can share.
We have a multicultural workplace, so sometimes we have a "potluck" and the dishes offered by our colleagues from Iran and Iraq, for example, are usually very popular.
27 November 2018 - 13:54
Helena says:
The starter was the very best! 😉 How nice with a multicultural workplace and cosy lunches!!!

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Sounds extremely good! Although I also hesitate about lamb but there seems to be a lot of other things on the menu that attract. It's so much fun with all the "strange" pickles and dumplings!

Ruth in Virginia says:
Not about food but my flirtation with Iran.
I worked for Irano-Swedish in Sthlm. After a little more than 3 years and
no change in the future within the small company, I began to think,
that it would be interesting to work in our office in Tehran. It was
directly "no", but I nagged hard enough, so in the end there was an OK from the
Director. My sister sewed a suitable wardrobe for me, and the
looked like Tehran would become a reality. THEN, luckily, there was a
coup d'etat in Iran! Mossadegh came to my rescue. 🙂 The company did not want
take responsibility for me in Tehran. It was the USA instead.
Imagine if I had travelled there and married an Iranian! I'd be walking around in a burka right now. Oh my!!!
27 November 2018 - 16:53
Helena says:
What a story!!! It could have been an exciting adventure! Or you would have gotten married and walked around Iran in a burka now ... It might not be so bad with the USA! ;).

Mr Steve says:
Yummy! The table filled with small plates and bowls. It's completely to my taste. There is a lot to choose from, even for me as a vegetarian.
I've never eaten Persian food, but I do eat Lebanese food from time to time and get the feeling that they are quite similar food cultures.
27 November 2018 - 18:17
Helena says:
Lebanese is one of our favourites too!
27 November 2018 - 19:43
BP says:
Dregel, dregel! I also like it when you can taste many small dishes. A little bit of everything. Like Ama, I like the special Persian rice. When I worked on St Eriksgatan, I often ate Persian food. The restaurant was just across the street. Too bad the owners couldn't make it work.
27 November 2018 - 19:25
Helena says:
Small dishes are just the best! And I have to agree that the rice is good 🙂 ðŸ™'

Sounds delicious! I'll have to plan a visit there next week when I'm in Stockholm =)
Christmas in Kenya sounded very exciting, and a bit scary with the "if I survive..." thing. It gives you a little perspective on the world.
Sri Lanka was one of the options this year, but Israel & Jordan won as it feels pretty safe to go there now, who knows what the situation will be in the future, it has been going on for so long...

Lena - good for the soul says:
It seems to be reminiscent of Lebanese food. I have eaten it a few times. Including a Lebanese Christmas table. I like!
