In today's travel news, we report on a study that identifies a worse environmental culprit than air travel. We also suggest a competition where you can win a ski trip for two and report on self-driving hotel rooms. And a few other things, of course! Every Monday (if we're not travelling) we present 5-6 travel news items, based on press releases or newspaper stories.

More people want to cycle and walk
As Rolfs Flyg & Buss launches its 2019 travel catalogue, it is presenting statistics showing that Swedes are increasingly looking for trips with a focus on hiking, cycling and other activities. Of the company's approximately 110,000 travellers, more than 4,000 chose a cycling or hiking trip in 2018, and the company expects an even higher figure for 2019. These were the most popular walking holidays in 2018:
- Tuscan coast
- Majorca
- Dolomites
Cruise worse than air travel, says study
A Danish study shows that cruising causes up to three times more carbon dioxide emissions than getting on an aeroplane. This is reported by the industry magazine TravelNews. A Danish marine consultancy firm, HOK Marineconsult, produced the figures.
According to the study, a cruise ship emits up to three times as much CO2 per passenger per kilometre as an aircraft. The results are based on average emissions from 157 cruise ships of different sizes.
New entertainment programme on Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line launched the ship Norwegian Encore, and at the same time presented the entertainment offer for autumn 2019. The ship will include the Broadway hit Kinky Boots, with songs by Cyndi Lauper.
There is also the largest go-kart track at sea, a 900 square metre VR centre with interactive games and a water park with two water slides, one of which extends more than three metres above the ship. Norwegian Encore will depart from Miami every Sunday from 17 November 2019 for 7-day Caribbean cruises.
Win a ski trip to Austria
Right now (until 13 December) you can compete for a ski trip for two to beautiful Zell am See in Austria. The competition is organised by LionAlpin in cooperation with the Austrian Tourist Office. To enter the competition, you need to subscribe to the LionAlpin newsletter and write an explanation of why you should win.
Self-driving hotel rooms soon here?
The new self-driving hotel rooms are coming, according to an article in Aftonbladet RESA. Canadian company Aprilli has designed a self-driving vehicle that runs on electricity and is a fully equipped hotel room.
The idea is that you can book a night, sleep your beauty sleep, and then wake up at your new destination. Breakfast is served by a drone landing on the vehicle and delivering through a hatch in the roof. It is unclear if or when this will become a reality.

Well, I don't know if I believe in self-driving hotel rooms, it feels like you lose some charm.
But I could definitely imagine a cycling holiday =)

Aprilli? Considering the name of the company, I don't really believe that 😉.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
We fully understand that hiking and cycling holidays are becoming more and more popular. I wouldn't say no to hiking in Tuscany or the Dolomites (which we just whizzed past in our campervan last spring).
However, I almost get chills just reading about cruise ships with shows, go-kart tracks, waterscapes, etc. ....
Self-driving hotel rooms, no thanks! Now I'm almost starting to feel like an old "resistance bitch", who thinks things were better in the past????

Helena says:
It's interesting to write about cruises, because it always evokes mixed feelings 😉 We're a bit keen on the Hurtigruten right now, but that's a different kind of cruise 😉.

Krister in Beijing says:
Regarding the comparison between a cruise and a flight:
How relevant is it to compare these very different forms of travel in terms of CO2 emissions per passenger and kilometre?
A cruise contains a complete package for an extended period of time with full service and often over a relatively short distance. A flight is a subset of a relatively long-distance journey, which is also usually combined with other (emissions-generating) activities.
If there were any relevance to the comparison, one would compare the total CO2 emissions of a typical cruise with the total CO2 emissions of a holiday trip by air.

Good reflection! There are many aspects that are difficult to compare, and this is a very relevant point. It would be interesting to see such a comparison too! In this one, I think you have done a little differently (and there is just a cruise still bad): https://www.caravanbransjen.no/aktuelt/klimarapport-viser-at-bobil-ma-fa-en-egen-avgiftsklasse

We had cycling holidays for many years before we went down the motorhome route.

BP says:
I've never been a fan of cruises, and it doesn't surprise me at all that these "monsters" are environmental villains. Oh I don't even want to think about all the food waste... A little funny was that you started with cruise ships and their high carbon dioxide emissions and immediately afterwards tells you that Norwegian Cruise Line launches a new ship. But I like Cindy Lauper;-)

It's great that hiking is growing in popularity. Hmm, self-driving hotel rooms. Well, nothing that looks appealing to me.
