Now we are back in the houseboat after our trip in Sri Lanka, and it is clear that the storm Alfrida has been raging. It was not quite the same in the houseboat when we came home... Luckily we have thoughtful neighbours who check on the boat when we are not at home!
Storm Alfrida
Storm Alfrida hit Sweden and northern Europe in early January 2019. The storm toppled many trees and caused power cuts across the country, which in many cases lasted for several days. In some places, it is actually still power cuts, and shops have run out of electricity here and there.
In the Bothnian Sea, the significant wave height was measured at 7.9 metres, with record waves of 14 metres, and the storm caused ferry services to be cancelled and bridges to close. In the Stockholm archipelago, wind speeds of an incredible 37 m/s were measured in the gusts, and on the mainland, wind speeds of 24 m/s were measured in the villages. So, how did our houseboat fare?
Holes about noise on the floor
When we got home, we realised that something had happened after storm Alfrida. We have lots of jars of spices and oils on the kitchen sink, and everything had gone in one direction. Some had continued down to the floor in the kitchen, and others had travelled down the stairs to the lower deck. The floor was full of salt and olive oil, and on the lower deck we had got a large olive oil stain on the carpet ...
Fortunately, we have wonderful neighbours who live right next door. They have a key to our houseboat and usually look after it when we are away. The morning after the worst storm winds, they went into our boat and fixed the worst mess. They straightened furniture that had fallen over and picked up cans from the floor and put them in our sink. Most importantly, they checked to make sure nothing serious had happened, and it hadn't.
Test in Storm Alfrida
The houseboat withstood the storm well, and the only thing visible on the outside was that our grill had been overturned. However, we know that the houseboat leaned heavily during the storm, and it would hardly have been comfortable to be at home, so perhaps it was just as well that we were in Sri Lanka.
If you're wondering how the other houseboats in the marina have fared, we can tell you that everyone seems to have done well, although some say they had trouble sleeping that night. And by the way ... if you have any good tips on how to remove olive oil from carpets, please share!
Deciree says:
But how lucky you were that you managed so well after the storm anyway? Could have been even worse...and how lucky you have such good neighbours who helped you. Welcome home again då☺️Ska då☺️Ska read your journey that I have not been able to do properly. Hugs to you

Welcome home! Can imagine that it must have rocked well in the houseboat during the storm! It felt like the whole house that stands on solid ground shook! Good that there was no major damage for you!
08 January 2019 - 7:55
Helena says:
Thank you very much! Yes, I think it really rocked. A little nice that we were not at home 😉.

You may well have that oil stain as a small memory of Alfrida that you never met. I myself had the bedroom window half open and then the cloth on the windowsill blew down to the floor. Ouch what a mess. 🙂
08 January 2019 - 10:17
Helena says:
Yes haha, it might become a memory whether we want it to or not 😉 Your mess sounded manageable, haha 😉.

Emma, sun like sun? says:
POTATO FLOUR!
Scoop up the runny oil with a spoon. Then add a thick layer of potato flour, leave it for a few hours and then vacuum/sweep it up. Hopefully most of it has disappeared. Repeat the procedure if necessary, if there is a little left, you can also go on with a little fat-soluble dishwashing liquid and bathe and wash with water. Don't rub too much because you will make the oil even worse in the fibres.
So there you have it, maybe get a spice rack or something similar so nothing is loose on the sink?
Little brother has a house on Blidö. 8 large spruce trees had fallen at their place, one had torn a part of an attic disc on the house but he is handy so it is "easily fixed". And now they have firewood for the sauna for a while ... But sad about the nice big trees.

Helena says:
Many thanks for the tips! We have not had time to grab the stain yet, but will go through all the tips we received and test tomorrow 🙂 On Blidö? Where Peter's brother and niece also have houses! 🙂

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Tell me how it went! I managed to get stains out of the sofa with potato flour anyway, but then I took care of it right away. Apparently it's supposed to make a difference.
Found this also from Kurera.nu:
"Frying pan, oil and fat
Heating potato flour and rubbing the stain with potato flour often makes grease stains disappear. Leave it on for a while before simply brushing it off and then immediately washing the garment as usual. Some people say that it works best to heat the potato flour beforehand. If the stain has not disappeared, treat it with hot water and detergent.
Grease stains that have been allowed to set for a while may need to be dissolved with a little petrol before washing them out with soap and water, some say."
I don't know what your carpet looks like, but keep in mind that lemon, for example, as mentioned below, can bleach. But of course, maybe it's better to have a slightly lighter stain than an oily and dark one.

Bring back bad memories of the Gudrun storm? We were completely without power for 23 days. Then we got an electrical system for a few days before everything was repaired after 4 weeks. A lot of forest that blew down for us, and the man got a log on his leg in the first unloading of the tractor load, had surgery and was on sick leave for a few months. I myself drove off the road in the slip and scrapped the car the week after the power came back (went well with me) but I would rather forget that time.

Helena says:
23 days!!!?? Absolutely crazy! you are (usually) not equipped to be without electricity in that way ... everything requires electricity !!!! And even worse with your husband's injury of course, how hard! Understand that you want to forget this!

Anette says:
Wow, wow, wow, what a tilt the houseboat must have had. Have you been on board during previous storms? Gudrun or Per?
Perhaps it was good that you were not at home.
Welcome home to a slightly scary Sweden.
08 January 2019 - 14:38
Helena says:
When the storms Gudrun and Per were, we hadn't bought the boat yet... We've been in the boat during smaller storms, but nothing as strong as these! Yes, I think it was good that we were not at home ...

Mr Steve says:
Welcome home! It was probably best for you to be far away when Alfrida was raging. Such neighbours are invaluable.
If it turns out to be bad, you will also feel the storm as there is more to come.
08 January 2019 - 15:20
Helena says:
Oh, is there more to come? Oh dear ...

Across the board says:
Welcome home. Yes, it would certainly have been difficult to sleep if you were at home. I'm glad it didn't get worse and I hope you get the stain out. Would potato flour or bicarbonate of soda work?

Helena says:
Thanks for the housewife tips! We haven't had time to do anything about the stain yet, but will try to test some tips tomorrow 🙂.

I'm glad to hear that you and your neighbours in the marina have survived without major damage.
Personally, I would take the carpet to a carpet cleaner. Otherwise, I have found this online: http://baomee.info/9/2012/05/hur-man-far-olja-eller-fett-flUckar-av-mycket-ljus-matta.html
Good luck!

Oh my God! I would not have lasted a minute on the boat in the storm! 🙂 Nice neighbours!
Too bad about the oil. Unfortunately, I have no tips. Got an olive oil stain on a skirt once and tried to come up with all sorts of things, but finally had to throw the skirt away. Of course it was a favourite!
