We checked out the large Volkswagen Grand California at the Caravan Stockholm motorhome and caravan show. This lorry is not only unusually large, but also unusually modern. "Like an aeroplane," said Peter as he stepped inside.

Completely new to the Swedish market
The Volkswagen Grand California, shown at Caravan Stockholm 2019, is indeed brand new to the Swedish market. In fact, it's so new that it arrived the same morning as the fair opened. The dealers hadn't even had time to look, but were curiously looking around.
The Volkswagen Grand California was shown for the first time at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf last autumn. Both a 6.00 metre long version and this 6.80 metre long version were shown. The difference between the two variants is that the longer one has a double bed lengthwise, while the shorter one has a double bed crosswise. In addition, the larger version has a more spacious bathroom, more packing space and higher ceilings.
Volkswagen Grand California
The Volkswagen Grand California is based on the Crafter model and has a 130 kW engine. The vehicle is front-wheel drive and has an automatic gearbox, while four-wheel drive is available as an optional extra. The motorhome has four belted seats and two sleeping places. An extra bed loft for children is available as an option in the smaller model.
Modern - "like an aeroplane"
Entering the Volkswagen Grand California was a different experience. Perhaps it felt a bit like stepping into the future. "Like an aeroplane", Peter thought, and perhaps the interior is indeed reminiscent of an aeroplane. The streamlined white cabinet doors make you feel like you're about to... take off!
The motorhome has plenty of cupboards around the beds, but it has to be said that they are small inside. There's plenty of room to stow socks, but perhaps not so much room for thick jumpers.
Kitchen and bathroom with a new look
The kitchen is relatively spacious for a flatbed, with two gas hobs and plenty of drawers. The fridge pulls out from the side (bottom photo) and also contains a deep freezer compartment. We liked this solution!
The bathroom has the same clean white style as the rest of the motorhome. We asked if you can get the car with other interior colours and the sales people thought so. But because the motorhome is so brand new, they don't know anything for sure yet...
Sales and prices
The production of the motorhome starts in week 14 and the sellers thought they might be ready for sale by the summer. The price is not entirely clear, but the preliminary price is from SEK 725,000.

The red and white one was cuter 😀.

Helena says:
Well, if it's the cuteness aspect that rules, then ... 🙂 .

A smaller car than ours would sometimes be good. Are there cars that are 6 metres outside and 9 metres inside? We would have bought that immediately! Hihi

Wouldn't that be perfect? The dream! ?

Sure it was different and nice too, but the price?
We are so happy with our Coral 🙂

A lot of the lorries we saw at the show are around these prices, it seems ...

Finally a white interior and not all in brown! Stylish and nice. Oh yes, the interior is reminiscent of an aeroplane. I also think the price is okay. What I like less is the colour combination on the outside. It reminds me of police patrol cars in the US.

Helena says:
Fun with variation in colours and decor! Haha, I don't think I know what police patrol cars look like in the US 😉.

Matts Torebring says:
The market is bursting at the seams, motorhome magazines are filled to the brim and many people's choice nowadays is "flatbeds". Personally, we think that so little is written about medium-sized and slightly larger vehicles. Those of us who are a bit older want to be comfortable and cosy. No offence to those who choose the Plåtis, but we want it to be spacious and comfortable.
19 February 2019 - 19:03
Helena says:
That's true, and I have to admit that we're going to be doing a lot more flatbed reports... It's not really because we like flatbeds more, but because there were some flatbed models that stood out at the fair, and that makes it fun to write about. But we'll have to be more careful next time! 😉

It really feels like they have been inspired by aeroplane design for some of the decor. But it looks nice and modern! 🙂
