Campsites in Europe
There are lots of campsites in Europe, of all types and models. Some are large and luxurious while others are small and familiar. Some are scenic and others are in a good location for visiting a big city. There are campsites that are very expensive and there are campsites that only cost a small amount. In other words, there are campsites to suit most tastes.
Camping or caravanning?
Many people travelling with a motorhome prefer caravan parks, which are simpler and usually cheaper places where you can stay with your motorhome overnight. The advantage of a site can be that you don't have to pay for services you don't need (such as a ball pit) and the sites are often close to towns and attractions.
Personally, we don't prefer one or the other, but find that campsites and pitches complement each other well. Pitches are perfect when we want to visit a city or don't need much service, and campsites are great when we want to run a washing machine... or when we want to enjoy beautiful nature. After all, there are many wonderfully scenic campsites in Europe! Here are 14 favourites.

We also vary between campsites and pitches. Especially in Germany, it is often a pitch. A German campsite that we fell in love with last spring was Campingplatz am Rhein, in Rüdesheim, with a nice walkway along the river to the centre.
We have also visited Camp Marina in Labin.
Another gem we would love to return to is the campsite in Mayrhofen, in the Zillertal, where we had incredible alpine peaks with views in all directions.
And let's not forget the campsites in the Lofoten Islands with divine views, etc.

Wow how many nice campsites there are! Probably have to go out and buy a new tent... But no, the campsites I prefer today are actually still hotel campsites 😉.
Have a great Sunday!

Haha, yes, buy a tent! 🙂 Or, hotel camping is probably also great! 🙂

We like to vary our living space. According to need and desire. Best is nature and near the sea with cycling distance to the village and shops.

Helena says:
Both nature and good distance, it's perfect! 🙂

Here, too, there will be hotel campsites that can be broken up with the occasional boat trip, but it's great fun with all the nice places there are.

Hotel campsites are certainly great too! 🙂

Fantastic pictures from the different campsites. I also prefer hotel and apartment campsites, and you can do that in the same places if you want to;-)
24 March 2019 - 18:12
Helena says:
It is excellent with hotels too 🙂 And they can also be nice sometimes!

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Haha! " ... services that you don't need (like a ball pit) ... "
Why does this sentence make me see Peter's head in a ball pit?! Like the worst Sheldon and Bazinga! (Google it if you don't get it).
The places you show are absolutely magical! As a child we did a lot of camping but I suspect those places are not quite as I remember them, not even as my parents remember them. It is at least 35-45 years ago .... But I do remember incredible camping sites from my childhood!
24 March 2019 - 18:28
Helena says:
Haha, no I did not understand anything, so I had to google ... fun! 🙂 Maybe you should never say never, ball seas might be fun 😉 Great that you have such nice camping memories from childhood !!!! 🙂

Matts Torebring says:
We have not found a campsite that beats the Les Castel campsites in France. Our encounter with them meant that we returned five years in a row to one of the campsites in the 1940s. https://www.camping-castels.co.uk

Helena says:
Thanks for the link Matts! I can imagine that these campsites are fantastic 🙂 .

Caroline King says:
Thanks for the tips! The one in Istria looks appealing. Do you know if it is toddler friendly?
26 March 2019 - 11:18
Helena says:
Hi Caroline! I don't know exactly what is required for a campsite to be toddler-friendly to be honest ... but there were families with children there (and divers because it is also good for diving). However, the beaches in Croatia are not the most child-friendly. They are not exactly sandy beaches, but either rocks or gravel.

For us, it was both free camping and a lot of travelling this winter. And some camping but none of the ones you mention. But always good to get new tips!
