Did you know that there is a museum in Bergrummet on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm, filled with toys and comic books? We had no idea, but discovered it by chance when we were going to a meeting organised there. Check out our photos from the Tidö Collection of Toys & Comics museum! Do you recognise any of the toys or comics from your own childhood?

Museum in the Mountain Room
On Tuesday, Antor, the organisation for all Nordic representatives of tourism organisations, arranged its annual meeting where they invite travel journalists and travel bloggers. This is always a good opportunity to mingle with interesting destinations, but what was new this year was that the meeting was organised in Bergrummet on Skeppsholmen. Then we discovered that there is a museum there!
Tidö Collection of Toys & Comics
The museum in the Bergrummet displays a huge collection of toys and comic books owned and managed by David von Schinkel, who in turn inherited the collection from his father. The collection contains almost 40 000 items, making it the largest toy collection in Northern Europe.
The collection has previously been exhibited in Tidö Castle in Västerås, but closed in 2016 and reopened a year later in Bergrummet on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm. 'We had never heard of this museum, so it was interesting to discover the huge collection of toys and comic books.
Toys in the cavern
There are really a lot of toys in the museum, and we can only show you a small selection. The toys are from many different eras, and you'll find cars, dolls, games and toy figures... Do you recognise some of the toys from your own childhood?
Did you have any favourite toys growing up? Peter liked cars and I (Helena) was very fond of a special fire engine. Maybe it's good that we got a campervan as a "toy" when we grew up, haha.
Comic books in the Bergrummet
This museum in the Bergrummet also has plenty of comic books from different times. Some we recognise very well, and some are new to us. Did you read comics when you were growing up? Which ones? Peter read Phantom and we both read Donald Duck.
Do you like museums?
Do you like museums? Have you visited the Tidö Collection of Toys & Comics museum in Bergrummet? We had never noticed this museum before, so it was a nice surprise. Stockholm is actually one of the most museum-dense cities in the world, and we have plans to check out some more museums over time.

I had never heard of this museum. We like to visit museums and this is definitely one we would visit if we were travelling. Unfortunately, there is far too little holidaying halfway from home...

I agree with you that it's easy to miss all the interesting things that are close, or reasonably close, to us. We try to work on that 😉 .

What fun! I've booked a trip to Stockholm with one of the grandchildren for the Easter holidays, so it might be a visit.
I lived in Västerås in the mid-70s and we visited Tidö Castle with its toy exhibition.

Glad you visited the exhibition when it was at Tidö Castle! And yes, why not? 🙂

JoY says:
I had no idea about this place. Certainly saw the entrance to it when we in December were at a concert above, in the Eric Ericson Hall. Thought it was the entrance to a cafe (it was dark then) and never got to the entrance. So close without knowing what it was. I want to go there and look.

Ama de casa says:
I have never heard of or seen this museum. Maybe because I haven't been in Sweden for five years?
I recognise some of the toys, but mainly several of the comic books. I liked the Phantom and even joined the Phantom Club 😀.
As an adult, I subscribed to several comic books, such as Ernie, Pondus and Bizarro. The child's mind has never gone away completely, but it has still become a little more "mature" perhaps 😉.
21 March 2019 - 9:39
Helena says:
The Phantom Club? Fun! 🙂 And fun that you read comics even as an adult! I have not, although when I happen to read series, I can appreciate it! There are many that are really good!

I had heard about it before I was there on Tuesday and have thought several times about taking William there but it has not happened. Now that I have been there and seen how nice it is, I will definitely bring the rest of the family there as soon as possible. And when it comes to comic books, I subscribed to Bamse and Kalle Anka throughout my childhood 🙂.
21 March 2019 - 15:32
Helena says:
Isn't that nice? Kalle Anka I also subscribed to. I sometimes read Bamse at a friend's house ðŸ™'

How nice that you have also been here. I was here with my grandchildren in February and all three of us enjoyed the visit.
I also try to visit Fotografiska once a month when we are at home. Definitely a favourite museum. I also like Millesgården, Thielska and Waldemarsudde. And the National Museum of course.
21 March 2019 - 17:16
Helena says:
I now realise that you also wrote about this museum Ditte! I read your blog, but I must have missed this. Nice to hear which other museums you like! Several of these I haven't visited at all, or it's been a long time.

BP says:
Strangely enough, I knew about the museum when Ditte visited the Bergrummet with her grandchildren a few weeks ago. I think the environment is incredibly cool and not least different. Of course I recognise some of the toys. My favourites were a Märkling model railway and a Steiff chimpanzee. No dolls here either;-)

Helena says:
I must have missed this post by Ditte! I usually read her blog, but sometimes there are stressful periods and I miss ... Nice favourites with railway and chimpanzee 🙂.

Susjos says:
No, that was a new and exciting museum!
The best toy that I remember so well, it was probably when I got my first Barbie, maybe I was around 7-8 years old, and I went alone with my little sister to the toy store and bought it (if I remember correctly) she had to buy a Skipper, because I was a big sister and would have a Barbie! Remember how sad I was when I loosened the nice hairstyle on Barbie and discover that she was bald underneath, the hair was only around the head and not on the whole head, and I desperately tried to get back the hairstyle she had from the beginning, and it did not go so well! Haha!
22 March 2019 - 1:19
Helena says:
What a special memory when you went and bought your Barbie! And what strong memories you can have of such events, like with the hair ....!

Lena - good for the soul says:
Yes and no. I have been to the toy museum, but at Tidö Castle. Really fun. I read Bamse and PEO when I was little, I remember. I also remember that for several years I wanted a car transport truck. You know, one of those trucks that transports passenger cars on two floors. But no, never got one. 🙁
