Is the name Stockholm getting a bit old? Is it perhaps time to change the name of our capital city? Probably not, but that's the thinking in Kazakhstan, where the parliament has voted in favour of changing the name of the capital. Other news this week includes STF's launch of signature trails and a list of destinations that offer the best value for money.

Direct flights from Gothenburg to Vienna in winter
Austrian Airlines already flies between Vienna and Gothenburg in the summer. Now the airline Laudamotion is establishing a direct route between the cities in winter. The direct route between Gothenburg and Vienna will start on 27 October 2019. As previously announced, Laudamotion will also start flying directly from Gothenburg to Stuttgart starting in April.
The capital of Kazakhstan changes its name
Last week, Kazakhstan's parliament voted in favour of renaming the capital, according to several media reports. The vote means the capital Astana will be renamed Nursultan, after President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who unexpectedly stepped down after almost 30 years in power. A few days ago DN reported about popular protests against the name change.
Conference on the future of travel
On 7 May, Breakit is organising the Travel Tech conference for managers, business developers and investors in the travel industry to discuss trends in digitalisation and tourism. The themes for the day are personalisation, the sustainable traveller and the sharing economy. Speakers include Lottie Knutsson, several start-up companies and a blogger who questions influencers' air travel.
STF launches 12 signature trails
The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) has designated 12 signature trails for hiking in Sweden. The new signature trails make it easy for new and experienced hikers to find their next hiking adventure, STF writes in a press release. It is a requirement that all are easy to reach by public transport and you can find them at STF website.
These destinations offer the best value for money
Over the past year, the Swedish krona has seen a negative development against many of the major tourist currencies, making travelling more expensive. But there are several countries that offer great value for money, according to a press release from Ticket.
- Destinations that have become cheaper in the last year: Turkey and Iceland
- Destinations that offer great value for money: Albania, Egypt, Vietnam and Thailand

There are also smaller places that have changed their names. A small village in Västerbotten called Kräkångersnoret changed its name to Lövsele many years ago. I can't really understand why... 😉.
Have a great start to the week!

Interesting and for me unexpected that Iceland has become cheaper but I still think it feels expensive when we look at accommodation, excursions, restaurant prices and other things. However, the trips there are fairly cheap.
We have visited Turkey in the past but it has never felt expensive. But probably it is even cheaper today.
Albania is a country in Europe we would love to visit. But there is so much...
The Sigtuna area has had nice hiking trails, so it's nice that STF is now advertising them so they are easier for more people to find.

I agree with you that Iceland is still expensive, but perhaps it has become slightly cheaper in relative terms...? And agree that the words Sigtuna and signature are very similar! 🙂

I actually did not know that there were direct flights from Landvetter to Vienna, so good!
The STF's signature trails are also worth a look.
Then we don't understand the point of renaming cities. I have plenty of Indian cities that have been renamed.

So, do cities in India change their names? A bit of an annoying habit I must say ...!!!
