To Arlanda
Arlanda Airport (ARN) is Sweden's largest airport and is located in the municipality of Sigtuna, about 40 kilometres north of Stockholm. Many flights leave from here and many people need to get to the airport from Stockholm. We have compared five common ways to get to the airport: airport bus, Arlanda Express, commuter train, private car and taxi. What is the best way to travel to Arlanda?
1. airport bus
Airport buses can be convenient, especially if you happen to live near one of the stops. The price is relatively low, especially if you book online.
- Travel routeThere are three different routes. The bus departs from either Stockholm City (via St Eriksplan), Liljeholmen (via Fridhemsplan) or Brommaplan (via Sundbyberg and Kista). The buses stop at Terminal 5, Terminal 4 and Terminal 2-3.
- Travelling time: 45-55 minutes (depending on the route)
- Departures: Up to every 10 minutes from and to Cityterminalen. Up to every 20 minutes from and to Liljeholmen and Brommaplan.
- Accessibility: Airport bus vehicles are not equipped with a ramp or crane and often have several steps. If you can get on and off the bus by yourself, you can travel with Flygbussarna.
- Price single journey 1 adult99-139 € (depending on the line and whether or not you book online).
2. Arlanda Express
The Arlanda Express is a very fast and convenient option, which is also the most environmentally friendly option. However, the price is relatively high.
- Travel route: From Stockholm Central Station to Arlanda South (Terminals 2, 3 and 4) and Arlanda North (Terminal 5).
- Travelling time: 18 minutes
- Departures: Trains run 6 times per hour during peak hours and every 15 minutes at other times until 22:35 from Stockholm and 23:05 from Arlanda. After that, the trains run every 30 minutes.
- Accessibility: One of the train's centre carriages has special space for wheelchairs and prams and a spacious toilet. Accompanying persons accompany the train free of charge, and Arlanda Express provides accompaniment from platform to terminal. A transport service card from Stockholm can be used.
- Price single journey 1 adult: 295 SEK (at certain times, mainly Thursday-Sunday, you can take two for 350 SEK).
3. commuter trains
Travelling to the airport by commuter train or commuter train and bus is an inexpensive option, but can also mean more hassle and a longer journey.
- Travel route: Commuter train to Märsta and then bus 583 to Arlanda. Another option is to travel directly from Stockholm to Arlanda on the Uppsala line (line 40), but you have to pay an additional passage fee.
- Travelling time: About one hour (train + bus) or 40 minutes (train)
- Departures: Search departures on SL website
- Accessibility: If you are travelling to Knivsta or Arlanda and need ramp service, this must be ordered in advance, as a longer ramp is needed at these stations.
- Price single trip for 1 adult: A single SL ticket costs 45 SEK. Extra passage fee costs 120 SEK. Children and young people do not pay a passage fee.
4. Own car
Of course, taking your own car to the airport can be convenient at times, and how expensive it is depends on how long you need to park.
- Travel route: From your own doorstep directly to the airport, where you must find suitable parking. Free shuttle buses run regularly from the long-term car parks to the various terminals.
- Travelling time: About 40 minutes from the centre of Stockholm.
- Departures: Whenever you wish.
- Accessibility: Several car parks at Arlanda are marked for people with disabilities.
- Price single journey (for all in the car): Approximately SEK 70 in petrol costs. Indoor express parking costs 330-360 SEK/day and outdoor express parking costs 290 SEK/day. Long-term parking costs 150 SEK/day or 599 SEK/week.
5. taxi
Taxis are convenient because you can go door-to-door and don't have to worry about parking. If you're travelling alone, it's an expensive option, but it can be affordable if there are several people sharing the taxi.
- Travel route: From your own door and directly to the right terminal at Arlanda.
- Travelling time: About 40 minutes from the centre of Stockholm.
- Departures: Whenever you wish.
- Accessibility: It is possible to order taxis that are accessible to people with reduced mobility. If you have a transport service card in Stockholm, contact Färdtjänst and order in the usual way.
- Price single journey (for all in the car): Some taxi companies run on a fixed price and others run on a taximeter. The price from Stockholm should be around or just over SEK 500 for a normal-sized car.
Which is the best option to Arlanda?
Which option is best depends on a variety of factors: how much of a hurry you're in, what you want to pay, where you live, how many people there are, and so on. We tend to vary between bus (cheap and reasonably easy), private car (which we park in the long-term car park) or taxi (especially when there are several of us).
We have also tried the Arlanda Express, which was fast and smooth, but perhaps a little expensive in comparison. How do you usually travel to Arlanda? Which mode of travel do you choose and why?
Ama de casa says:
I've tried all of them and they all have their advantages and disadvantages.
The first three years when we travelled to Sweden one week per month and stayed in a hotel at Hötorget, Arlanda express was unbeatable. Since we travelled there and home on the weekend, it was "go two pay for one" so it wasn't much more expensive than the bus and went very smoothly.
When we lived in Sollentuna, however, it was not a good option at all.

When you go two pay for one, it becomes affordable. And I agree that authorisation is a convenient option!

When I lived in Stockholm, we sat on the commuter train because we had SL cards. These days I always take the Arlanda Express.

Good job taking the commute! 🙂

From the city I live 10 min walk from Arlanda express so drive it. I have an Arlanda badge as I work at ARN in the hangar so the trips are heavily subsidised. If I go from work (frösundavik) it will be the Flygbussen that goes right outside.

Helena says:
Handy with a subsidy! 🙂

For me it was ARLANDA EXPRESS from the airport.

Arlanda Express is comfortable!

Ditte says:
If we only have hand luggage, it's the airport bus. It always works. We have occasionally tried Arlanda Exoress but if there is a stop on the Uppsala line, the rails, it does not work. If we have more luggage, we book a taxi with Solnataxi which costs 480 SEK from Söder to Arlanda. Good company, we think.

Helena says:
Yes, of course, the luggage you have also plays a role!

Matts Torebring says:
A private car to Arlanda is not easy for us untrained people. A number of years ago, we landed at 11.30 on a Sunday night. It took an hour for us to find the car. We crossed through bushes and searched everywhere. We will not do this again!
02 March 2019 - 18:00
Helena says:
What a pain in the arse! Yes, it is important to know where you have parked the car ...! (We usually park in roughly the same place every time, which makes it a bit easier).

BP says:
Now we live only 25 minutes from Arlanda Airport so we always choose a taxi, quick and easy from door to door so to speak.
Occasionally we have used the long stay car park, but depending on how many weeks you are away it is more expensive than a taxi.
If I lived in the city and close to an airport bus stop, I would probably choose that option. All train options are going away given all the hassle I've read about.
02 March 2019 - 18:15
Helena says:
I agree that it depends a lot on where you live! And that it also matters how long you will be away ...

Renate's travels says:
When I lived in Stockholm I always took the bus. Cheap, good and quite fast. It also had a stop close to where I lived, so it suited me fine. I find the Arlanda Express terribly expensive, no matter how smooth it is. Even the airport train in Norway is only 2/3 of the price and covers a longer distance.

Daniel | FlyingDryden says:
I usually travel to and from Arlanda by airport bus. Easy to get to the city centre or to my jobs in Solna and Sundbyberg. And even if the job pays, I avoid the Arlanda Express on principle because I think the regular price is so terribly overpriced. It's an extra 25 minutes by bus to the city centre, but the train costs three times as much. I am not in such a hurry. 🙂
One advantage of flying coach is that if you pay in the app and enter EuroBonus, you get one point per krona. So you can earn more points on a bus journey than on a domestic journey with SAS.

I usually choose the car and the long-term car park. Nice to not have to fit times, is my only excuse. 🙂
