The German town of Waren is a picturesque little town nestled on the large Müritz lake. Here you can stroll in peace and quiet, or perhaps experience the natural history experience centre Müritzeum. For our part, there were also continued challenges in the "Beach Basket Challenge" competition.
Table of contents
The beach basket challenge continues
The "beach basket challenge" is both a trip and a competition for a total of seven Swedish motorhomes in northern Germany, and yesterday it was time for the third challenge of the trip.
After the first challenge (bowling at Ostsee camping) and the second challenge (kubb in Wismar) it was time to roll on to the third challenge of the #strand basket challenge2019. It was off to Waren! On the map below you can see the entire route of the day, from Ostsee camping to Waren, and then on to Mirow Castle and Camping Havelberge.
Goods in Northern Germany
Waren is a nice little town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in northern Germany. Germany. In this charming little town, filled with beautiful old half-timbered houses, around 21,000 people live here. There's a caravan park for motorhomes (for which you have to pay). pay), and from here it's just a short walk into the town centre.
Lake Müritz
Waren is located right next to the large lake Müritz, which is the second largest lake in Germany. Here it was a holiday feeling with tourist boats and food stalls. For our part, it was lunch with "fisch brötchen" or fish and chips. We needed to recharge with energy for the upcoming challenge!
Museum Müritzeum in Waren
Müritzeum is a natural history museum or experience centre in Waren that is really nice. The museum is interactive in many ways and is interesting to visit for both adults and children. Here you can learn a lot about native plants and animal species and, for example, listen to animal sounds or check out fish in large aquariums.
This is also where we had challenge number 3! We knew there would be a quiz and everyone listened intently during the tour to pick up important information. That didn't help much. The elimination question was about guessing how many fish were swimming in a huge aquarium. Difficult!
Winners of Challenge 3
Here are the winners of challenge number 3 of the Beach Basket Challenge! We say a big CONGRATULATIONS to:
- Team Ixeo with Lars and Britt-Marie (3 points)
- Team Parrot with Lars and Maria (2 points)
- Team Aviano with Christer and Petra (1 point)
Total score - right now
Here you can see the combined score of the top three teams after three challenges.
- Team Parrot with Lars and Maria (7 points)
- Team Ixeo with Lars and Britt-Marie (6 points)
- Team Aviano with Christer and Petra (4 points)
Mirow Castle
After the visit to Waren, we drove to Mirow Castle, which is beautifully surrounded by water. Just outside there is a car park for motorhomes, very convenient! Here we started with coffee and pastry in the small castle café, which was perfect. Even Curre the parrot seemed very happy and munched happily on cake. When he tried a few drops of coca cola, he shouted out loud with delight.
We walked for a while in the beautiful surroundings, and looked at the tomb where a king who killed himself is buried. The pillar is short because his life was short and a snake slithers around it, to show that his life was under pressure...
You can also see the interior of the castle and the rooms are said to be very beautiful, but as our schedule was a bit tight we had to drive on to the campsite where we would spend the night.
Camping Havelberge
At noon we rolled into Havelberge Camping and Holiday Park. This is a huge campsite with lots of pitches for motorhomes and caravans, as well as lots of cabins and caravans. The campsite is beautifully situated by a lake and offers a restaurant, entertainment and canoe hire.
Liqueur tasting by the fire
In the evening we gathered around the campfire, and the local tourist office arranged for us to try some local treats in the form of liqueur and chocolate. Fun! The chocolate was really good and comes from K&C Chocolates in Waren.
The liqueurs came from Mecklenburgische Likörmanufaktur, Manufaktur Löwenzahn and Mürli. The favourite was probably the honey-flavoured liqueur. Above all, we had a nice evening together at the campfire!

Lena in Wales says:
I have never visited Waren, what a beautiful city!
Has perhaps not become a major tourist destination for Swedes, I have not been there as a tour guide and when I travelled around Europe as a young man, we did not have access to East Germany.
What fun you seem to be having!

Helena says:
It's a fun trip! And nice to be able to show something new! It seems that the majority of tourists around here are German, or possibly Swiss, Austrian and Dutch. There is definitely a lot of interesting things to discover here!

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
It is only to be noted that this part of Germany requires another trip when we can explore these lovely places in depth. The goods were really tasty!
29 May 2019 - 20:34
Helena says:
Agree that there are exciting places here! It feels like the eastern part of Germany is a bit "unexplored" for the Swedes 😉 Agree that Waren was nice, would have liked to spend more time there!

JoY says:
You manage to do a lot and yet not everything apparently "planned". Seems to be in nice places but how many fish were there? And what is in the trees, swings? in the last picture by the campfire?
29 May 2019 - 21:49
Helena says:
Surely we have time for a lot! And yes, it gets like that sometimes when planning, easy to forget that you also have to have time to refuel and stuff 😉 What is visible in the trees is a high-altitude course! 🙂

Glad to see that your website is up again. Wondering why the site was down yesterday, so glad you can report again!
One point in the challenge part 2 - congratulations. An honourable bronze;-)
I have never actually heard of the charming town of Waren, Lake Müritz or Mirow Castle. East Germany is a completely unwritten leaf for me. That's why it's so much fun to ride with you:-)

Helena says:
Yes, what a pain. Our site was down for a really long time. According to the web host, they were going to migrate to a new server, and it apparently took some time. And we didn't get any information before! And of course there are many interesting things to experience in this part of Germany, it does not feel like so many Swedes find here!
