In co-operation with Czech Tourism
Have you experienced spas in the Czech Republic? Or maybe even visited the spa triangle in the western part of the country? Here, it's all about the spa: hot tubs, saunas and treatments. You'll find everything from traditional Czech treatments you've never heard of - to modern wellness centres.
Table of contents
Spa in the Czech Republic - in the Spa Triangle
Spa seems to be an important part of Czech culture, at least if you are in the Spa Triangle in the western part of the country. The Spa Triangle consists of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) and Frantiskovy Lazne. Here, people spend time "drinking the well", but above all bathing. Read more about the three spas here:
Traditional medical spas - or modern wellness
The Spatriangle in the Czech Republic offers everything from traditional medical spa treatments (which we've never heard of before) to all the modern wellness treatments you're used to. For example, what about oxygen therapy, inhalation, vibrating bed, scotch duch or magnetotherapy (no need for me to translate)?
The treatments are believed to help with everything from skin conditions and circulatory problems to metabolic issues or cancer rehabilitation, and those who wish to do so can first see one of the spa's doctors. For those who prefer, you can opt for the standard wellness experience: bubble baths, saunas, mud wraps, massages, manicures or beauty treatments.
Spa at Hotel Prezident
We visited Hotel Prezident in Karlovy Vary for lunch, and at the same time got a tour of the spa. Unfortunately, there was no time for us to try the spa here, which was a bit of a shame. We liked the combination of traditional Czech spa treatments and a modern spa and wellness centre. Doctor and founder Milada Sárová enthusiastically told us about the business.
Spa at the Grand Hotel Pupp
The most historic, exclusive and celebrity-filled hotel in Karlovy Vary, Grand Hotel Pupp, of course, has its own spa. Here the spa has been installed afterwards, and they chose to build a modern spa and wellness centre, even though the hotel is otherwise very "classic". We would not have minded hanging out here for a while either!
Spa Zamecke Lazne
So, where did we end up bathing? In the centre of Karlovy Vary, the historic spa is located Zamecke Lazne. Here Lina and I had fun, from the blog Liniz Travel & Lifestyle, for two hours while our other travelling companions found other things to do. This is a fresh and stylish spa, but more traditional than modern.
There's a swimming pool, several types of sauna, kneipp therapy (where you walk through alternating hot and cold water for blood circulation), a tea corner and some kind of breathing machines. Lina took a photo of me going into the cold part of the Kneipp pool ...
Danubius Resort and Roman Baths
Danubius Health Spa Resort Nove Lazne in Marianske Lazne can probably also be considered a more traditional spa in the Czech Republic. Here we can highly recommend making a visit just to experience the wonderful environment in the "Roman baths" (top picture). The house itself where the spa is located is also fantastic. By the way, this hotel complex consists of a number of hotels, all connected by corridors - and there is of course more than one spa.
This time there was no time for bathing here, but last summer we spent three hours here where we alternated the beautiful Roman bath with whirlpool and recliners. How marvellous!
For a truly traditional spa experience, book a mineral bath in King Edward VII's Royal Cabin, originally built for the nobility. The picture shows the similar Imperial Cabin from the late 19th century, which looks much the same. When we were here, there was a treatment in the royal bath, so it was not possible to take photos there at the time.
Beer spa - a different kind of spa in the Czech Republic
Last but not least, don't forget that there are plenty of different beer spas. Read our report on beer spa in the Czech Republic. We tried a traditional beer spa outside Marianske Lazne, which was a really nice experience!
Prices for spas in the Czech Republic?
One advantage of going to a spa in the Czech Republic is that the prices are really good. Of course, prices vary from place to place, and it's probably more expensive if you're in larger tourist-dense cities. Here are some examples of prices in the Spa Triangle in the western Czech Republic (2019):
- Classic massage 50 minutes at Hotel Prezident in Karlovy Vary = approx. 550 SEK
- Two hours of spa at Zamecke Lazne in Karlovy Vary, including mineral baths and various saunas = around 365-430 SEK depending on the season.
- Three hour spa at Danubius Health Spa Resort Nove Lazne in Marianske Lazne, including whirlpool and sauna = approx. 315 SEK
- Three-day wellness package at the exclusive Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary with a share of a double room, breakfast, a 3-course menu, 50 minutes of massage, herbal bath, private suite in the spa for two hours and unlimited access to the spa = approximately SEK 6250 per person.
- oil spa at the Chadovar Beer Spa in Chadova Plana including two beers = about 290 SEK.

TRIP TO THE SPA TRIANGLE IN CZECH REPUBLIC
- Flight: You can fly from, for example, Stockholm or Copenhagen to Prague. From here it is easy to get to Karlovy Vary by bus. Read more in our post about Travel to Karlovy Vary. There is a train connection between Marianske Lazne and Prague.
- Car: Driving from, for example, Rostock in Germany to Karlovy Vary takes a little less than 6 hours if you count pure driving time. Driving from Prague takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Super nice! A few years ago I had never been to a spa either, actually. But it can be really nice! I especially like bubble baths, to get down in the lap of a few hours. And iofs gladly a massage if we have the opportunity to take a treatment (have not done it many times, but some;))
