Yangtorp is something as unusual as a giant qigong temple in Skåne. In the middle of the Scanian landscape, among fields, cows and cottages, rises the magnificent and ornate temple. For a long time the temple lay in ruins and was robbed of everything of value. Now it has risen again, and today qigong courses, retreats and conferences are organised here.

Yangtorp Sanctuary
Yangtorp is a Qigong temple located in Hörby municipality in Skåne. The temple is located in the middle of the Scanian landscape, and if you are not prepared for what you are about to encounter, you are sure to be in for a shock. You drive along a gravel road and see nothing but lush trees, cottages and cows... until a huge Chinese palace appears in your field of vision.
Our blogger friends Daniela and Göran brought us here for a tour, which they had booked in advance. They didn't tell us much beforehand, but said "you'll see". I (Helena) could not help googling before we left, but Peter was completely unprepared when the temple appeared ...
Qigong temple in Skåne
Yangtorp is a qigong temple in Skåne that covers an impressive 12,000 square metres and is surrounded by a large garden filled with Buddhist statues. Qigong courses, reatreats and conferences are organised here.
Yangtorp - rise, fall and resurrection
The story of Yangtorp is both sensational and improbable. It's hard to keep up with the twists and turns as you read on, and time and again you think that the reality is more fascinating than the poem.
Swedish Buddhist monk Master Marcus started building Yangtorp in 1998. The construction became more and more expensive and after a few years a conflict arose with the financiers, Anni-Frid Reuss from ABBA and the Englishman Henry W Smith.
The conflict resulted in a court case and Yangtorp was then left to decay without funding. Time tore down what had been built and everything that could be stolen, from copper roofs to statues, was stolen.
No one thought Yangtorp would ever come back to life, but they were wrong. In 2013, Yangtorp was bought back by a foundation, with Master Marcus as a member. When the temple was rebuilt, it became even bigger and more magnificent than originally intended.
Guided tour
We were invited to a guided tour, which was super interesting. Our guide, who works at Yangtorp, told us about the activities today, and showed us the different parts of the temple.
Master Marcus Bongart
After a short tour, we also got to meet Master Marcus in person. Marcus told us that he started his career by learning Chinese medicine in China. He specialised in qigong and came back to open a qigong temple.
The vision is to spread understanding of ancient Chinese philosophy and help people realise the importance of taking care of their health and taking responsibility for their actions. The hope is that the spectacular façade of the temple will not overpower the content. Master Marcus wants the temple to be a place where people can come to find peace and unwind.
Chinese Health Centre
In Yangtorp there is, among other things, a 'Chinese Health Centre'. Here Master Marcus makes a diagnosis based on Chinese medicine. You can then take part in various treatments and activities, such as qigong, acupuncture and various types of sauna and baths.
Retreats, Qigong courses and conferences
Yangtorp organises reatreats and qigong courses, ranging from a few hours to a whole week. Participants come both from Sweden and abroad, especially from Denmark and Poland, to learn qigong or to relax and feel good with qigong, meditation and vegetarian food.
You can also organise your conference at Yangtorp if you wish, and combine it with qigong, for example. However, it is important that the conference participants are prepared for what they will encounter. Our guide was clear that it can be completely wrong if the conference participants are set on a piece of meat and a few glasses of wine in the evening ...
Stay at Yangtorp
You can stay at Yangtorp in connection with a retreat or qigong course, but it is also possible to just stay overnight. Yangtorp has 32 hotel rooms and two suites. All rooms are decorated according to feng shui, and all colours and materials are carefully selected to create balance and harmony. There is no TV in the room and alcohol is not served. People come to Yangtorp to find a different kind of tranquillity.

Wow! Oh, wow! We missed that! What a lovely place! We may go there. We have both been on a retreat before with qi gong etc. It is wonderful to be "off everyday life" for a while. The story about this is also interesting. Sometimes doors close against your goal, but if that is the intention, others open better.

What a thing! Completely unexpected! There is a Chinese Buddhist temple in Rosersberg, but it is nothing compared to this magnificent palace. Hope it will go better for Yangtorp this time. It's certainly not a croft;-)
