The island of Rügen is a beach paradise in northern Germany, with chalk-white cliffs and charming holiday resorts. We travelled here together with six other motorhomes for the 'Beach Basket Challenge' trip and competition. The seven teams in the seven motorhomes have experienced the beaches of Rügen and a fantastic treetop course. In addition, we have challenged each other in two challenges, and in the end were able to select a winner in the 1TP5 Beach Basket Challenge2019.
Table of contents
Ön Rügen
Rügen is an island in north-eastern Germany, in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Rügen is Germany's largest island, with 69,000 inhabitants, and can be reached via the bridges of the Stralsund. The main towns are Bergen and Sassnitz, and many people go for sunbathing and swimming in the holiday resorts of Binz and Sellin. We made our way to Göhren where we checked in with the motorhomes at the Regenbogen Göhren holiday resort.
Rainbow Göhren
Rainbow Göhren is a huge holiday resort with lots of campsites and cottages. There's also a bar, entertainment, activities for kids and even a ... cinema!

The resort is located right next to a long beautiful sandy beach, and within walking distance of Göhren, with shops and restaurants.

Göhren on Rügen
Göhren is a seaside resort on the island of Rügen with a long promenade, a long pier into the sea, beautiful ornate white houses, small shops, restaurants, ice cream and waffle parlours, green walks and great adventure golf courses.

Rügensche Kleinbahn
On the island of Rügen, there are also fine steam locomotives that can sometimes be heard chugging by. The trains run on a narrow gauge railway from Putbus to Göhren, via the towns of Binz, Sellin and Baabe. Some of the steam locomotives are as old as 100 years.

Prora on the island of Rügen
Yesterday we took the camper vans to look around the surroundings. Among other things, we checked out the world's longest building complex, Prora. This huge holiday resort, built by Adolf Hitler, was constructed 150 metres from the beach. The building has six floors and is 4.5 kilometres long, with a break in the middle.

Tree top trail
We also went to Naturerbe Zentrum Rügen - Treetop paths with its tree top trail. What an experience! The high and wide wooden bridges go high up among the trees, and for once you can experience nature as it looks from a bird's eye view.

At the end of the walk you come to a really high tower. I (Helena) am afraid of heights and only got halfway, but that experience was good enough for me!

Challenge 5: Pumping water
Since a challenge in the 1TP5 Beach Basket Challenge2019 was cancelled, we got an extra challenge yesterday. One of each team had to pump water into a "tree" in 20 seconds, as high up as possible. Congratulations to the three teams that took first place in this challenge:
- Team Dreamteam with Janne and Gunilla (3 points)
- Team Ixeo with Lars and Britt-Marie (2 points)
- Team Parrot with Lars and Maria (1 point)

Challenge 6: Building sandcastles
The 6th and final challenge of the entire 1TP5 Beach Basket Challenge2019 was to build sandcastles. We were met at the reception of Regenbogen Göhren by a "play leader", who equipped us each with a small bag of "tools".

Then we had 20 minutes to build. In the small picture to the left you see our sandcastle, in the small picture to the right the judges and in the picture at the bottom the winners: Christer and Petra from Team Aviano. We say congratulations to the winners of this challenge:
- Team Aviano with Christer and Petra (3 points)
- All others (2 points)

The winners of the #Strand basket challenge2019
All the teams have been fantastic during the challenges and in a way everyone is a winner! So congratulations to everyone, but an extra big CONGRATULATIONS to the winners Team Parrot and the second and third place teams!
- Team Parrot with Lars and Maria (13 points)
- Team Ixeo with Lars and Britt-Marie (10 points)
- Team Aviano with Christer and Petra (7 points)

Last night with the gang
Everything has an end. The beach basket challenge has been a fantastic fun and exciting adventure, and not least, it has been a wonderful and comfortable group of people travelling together. The programme has perhaps sometimes been on the verge of for intense, but it is very positive memories we take with us. The last evening we had dinner at the restaurant at Hotel Hanseatic. Here we had a fantastic buffet and the atmosphere was great.

We ended the evening with a drink at Regenbogen Göhring, where we stand with the motorhomes. Today it is time to roll together towards Sassnitz and the ferry to Sweden. We will gladly return to beautiful Rügen!

Since Germany has unfortunately always become a transport route to more southern latitudes, it feels like it's time to see something other than the autobahn...possibly it can be so this summer and it seems that it may be worth a visit. You seem to have had a wonderful (and intense!) week.

For us, Germany was also for a long time mostly a transport route, but now we have started to discover more and more of the country, which is really fun. There are many nice things to see and experience!!! 🙂

Great fun to have followed your entire journey. I have also seen and experienced a lot through the posts.
For me it would have been a very intensive programme because I prefer to take in things and environments when I'm there and want to have plenty of time. But on the other hand, you can come back. I like treetop hikes and probably liked the one here. Have tried in Bali and in Thailand.
Congratulations to all teams for their hard work and extra congratulations to the winners.

Helena says:
Glad you wanted to follow the journey Ditte! Those who want to travel to the same places and discover them can do so at a much slower pace. We ourselves are thinking of returning to Rugen! 🙂 Glad you tried treetop hikes in Asia, must be fascinating in that nature!
