Have you been on safari in Kenya or Tanzania? Or maybe you dream of seeing the big 5 on an African safari? We have visited both Kenya and Tanzania, but so far we haven't done a safari trip. African safaris are high on our bucket list, and here are some of the places we would like to visit.
Table of contents
Experiencing safari
We have experienced several different types of safaris during our travels, ranging from beaver safaris in Grövelsjön to northern Norwegian safaris with eagles and seals. The most "real" safari we experienced was probably the winter safari in Sri Lanka when we saw real big elephants. It was a fascinating and interesting trip, but still we have to admit that we have yet to experience a "real" safari. real African safari. This experience simply remains on our bucket list!
How did we miss out on safaris in Kenya and Tanzania?
If you're travelling to Kenya or Tanzania, you want to experience a safari, right? We've been to Kenya twice and Tanzania once, and we still haven't experienced an African safari.
The first time we travelled to Kenya (2007) we had planned to go on safari, but we happened to be travelling in the middle of a turbulent election, and we moved to Tanzania. There was beach life on Zanzibar (which in itself was fantastic!), but no safari. The next trip to Kenya was for a wedding, and then there was no time left ...
The big five
When people talk about "The Big Five" they mean lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and African buffalo. Many people think that these are the "finest" animals to see during a safari, but to be honest, there are many, many more interesting animals. I would just as soon see a cheetah, hippo or giraffe, for example. Regardless of which animals you dream of seeing, you have to conclude that Africa is the best place.
Safari in Kenya
It is popular to go on safari in Kenyawhich you can do with Safariresor.se. In Kenya, for example, you can experience safaris on the savannah in the Masai Mara, which is known for its rich wildlife and its large population of lions. In the park there is also a chance to see striped wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, elephants, African buffalo, leopard, baboon, green markatta and many other animals.
Other popular safari spots include Lake Nakuru with its flamingos and the large Amboseli National Park, which is home to elephants, African buffalo, impala, lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, giraffes, zebras and striped wildebeest, among others.
If you wish, you can combine the safari with other interesting destinations in the country, such as the capital city of Nairobi. We spent a few days in Nairobi when we were in Kenya in 2012, and found the city unexpectedly exciting and interesting.
Safari in Tanzania
Going on safari in Tanzania is perhaps just as appealing. There are several famous safari destinations, such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. I Serengi includes many predators, such as lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, jackals and crocodiles. I Ngorongoro Crater you can see wildebeest, African buffalo, various gazelles, zebras, warthogs, baboons, hippos and various bucks.
Additional national parks are Tarangire, known for its elephant herds and its lions, leopards, baboons and pythons, Lake Manyara, which offers elephants, cats and birdlife, and the wildlife sanctuary. Selous where there are plenty of elephants, black rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles.
In combination with the safari trip, you can of course visit the wonderful island of Sardinia. Zanzibar, with its beautiful sandy beaches, fine spice farms and lovely boat trips.
Which animals are on your bucket list?
I (Helena) love really animals, and seeing animals in the wild is one of the most amazing things you can do, I think. A favourite is all kinds of monkeys (maybe because they are so similar to us?) so I like to see different monkeys. Another favourite is different kinds of felines. And, of course, large animals like rhinoceros and hippos are also impressive.
Have you ever been on safari in Kenya or Tanzania, or perhaps elsewhere in Africa? What wildlife have you seen, and which ones are on your bucket list?
Sandra Lifsresor.se says:
I have a check on the Big Five even though the leopard moved very quickly. It ran in front of the car and disappeared into the bushes. Giraffes were probably the coolest to see in person. But of course, lions and elephant herds weren't bad either.

Wow, cool! I would like to see giraffes in the wild! Soooo fascinating animals! 🙂

No, haven't been to Africa but the rest of my side of the family has. We would have gone all together but dropped out for several reasons. A little sad but nothing I regret in retrospect (Both the son and I had eaten penicillin just like my older brother. The older brother who went on the trip got malaria as the malaria tablets work poorly / not at all if you have eaten penicillin close by, he found out afterwards).
But of course I would like to experience the big animals, especially the felines.

I'm sorry that you had to drop out, but I completely understand you. Cats are indeed fascinating!

I went on safari in Tanzania in 2013: Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. It was absolutely teeming with wildlife, in large numbers and at close range. The Big Five was completed in three days. A powerful experience! (Then continued to Lushoto, Pangani and Zanzibar).

Helena says:
Oh how cool! And fantastic that you actually get to see the big five! We still have to experience this!

Have only seen the Zoo! But not so bad now Copenhagen Zoo has been modernised and rebuilt so it is so nice.

Helena says:
Zoos can be a bit different, but it's good if they are modern and have large areas for the animals!

It's certainly one of the coolest things you can experience, seeing these large wild animals in person.
When I got to see the very first wild animal, is the one, that stuck in my mind the most. It was in Zimbabwe, came with the jeep early in the morning and right next to the car was a bush and above it a big giant head, of a giraffe, eating the leaves. It was powerful. Giraffes are amazingly beautiful and graceful when they run. I can't wait to see them again.
Can also tick the Big Five as we have been on safari a number of times, Tanzania Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. and the latest was Valsafari up in Andenes.
Getting to go to the Galapagos Islands has been a desire for a long time so also to see the Orangutans. Who knows, the wish may come true but unlikely hahaha?

Helena says:
Wow! I almost shudder when you tell me about the giraffe! I think giraffes are probably one of the animals I am most curious to see in the wild 🙂 Cool with several safaris and having seen the big five!

Have never been to Tanzania or Zanzibar, but had a WONDERFUL 4 week trip to Kenya when we were with my cousin and her husband (they got married during the trip) and visited a couple of friends who then lived in Nairobi. Visited all the parks you mention in the post and several more. Saw all the "big five" and lots of other animals. My favourites are probably giraffes:

Yes, and many more of course - I love animals and nature!
One animal that I would love to see in the wild (though preferably from a safe place like a car or something) is a bear. I have "hunted" bears several times and twice I have almost seen one 😀.
Though if I want to see a bear, I'll probably have to go somewhere else than Africa 😉.

Helena says:
Giraffes are sooo cool animals! 🙂 Also agree that it would be exciting to see bears. Recently read about a blogger who visited one of those bear scouting places (or whatever it's called haha) and got to see both bears and bear cubs 🙂.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
Has been on safari in Tanzania, South Africa and Botswana and seen the Big Five in all three countries.
However, I think it was an incredible difference and I can only recommend Botswana. Not nearly as many safari cars and tourists but incredible amounts of wildlife. So cool!

Wow, what experiences! Hope we also get away on safari at some point! 🙂

Even though we did exactly that trip with Tanzania, Kenya and Zanzibar and managed to see the "big seven" :), that trip is still on my bucket list. Would love to do it again :).
