It's Monday again and time for travel news! This week we can tell you about a tropical upstart, about environmentally friendly tourism in a mountain cabin and about a sauna egg that lands in Rättvik this summer. Among other things. We'd love to hear what you think about this week's travel news!

This summer's tropical upstarts
According to the Resia Travel Barometer, it is still Spain and Greece that top Swedes' lists of popular travel destinations this summer. However, the destination that surprises and stands out the most is a tropical paradise. Bali in Indonesia has increased by 27% compared to the same period last year (departure 1 June - 31 August).
New visa requirements for the US - must enter social media data
According to the BBC and DN, under new rules, most people applying for visas to the US will have to provide their social media usernames, phone numbers and email addresses going back five years. The only people exempt from the requirement are some diplomats and civil servants. For people with a Swedish passport, this will be relevant if they plan to stay in the US for more than 90 days, as it is only then that they need to apply for a visa.
Heavy pressure on rail travel this summer
Bookings of SJ tickets for summer holiday travel are increasing sharply, according to a press release from SJ. For the period June-August, ticket bookings have increased by 32 per cent compared to last year. These destinations are the most popular:
- Örebro (+55 %)
- Copenhagen (+44 %)
- Gothenburg (+40 %)
- Mjölby (+39 %)
- Stockholm (+32 %)
Holidaying in a mountain cabin is better for the environment than staying at home!
In a thesis from Lund University of Technology, written in collaboration with the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), greenhouse gas emissions for the operation of the association's mountain cabins in roadless land have been calculated.
The results show that an average overnight stay for one person in STF's mountain cabins corresponds to emissions of 2.0 kg of greenhouse gases, which is half of the 3.8 kg emitted during a night at home. The greatest climate impact is the actual journey to the mountains, which is affected by whether you choose a plane or a train.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
I read a while ago that some international guide magazine, Time Out I think, had placed a sauna bath in Solar Egg in third place on things to do in your lifetime. That it is now in Rättvik is cool!
It's good that train travel is increasing, as long as the Swedish Railways and our leaders realise that the railway network must be kept in good condition and that it may actually cost money.
Bali in summer? No thanks!

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
I have helped to save 4400 tonnes of carbon dioxide Bought a brand new computer from https://shop.inrego.se/. Just so the railway network can cope with increased traffic, maintenance has been inadequate.

Smart to be able to run second-hand! More should be done!

What a cool egg! A very beautiful picture 🙂
We first visited Bali in 1987 on our honeymoon and then in the 90s sometime. Guess it may have changed a bit since then.
Have a great start to the week!

Had no idea about that egg, glad it's in Sweden now! I wonder what the US means by phone numbers. I haven't had my own phone number for many years. Have a company subscription. May find out the day it becomes a visa applicant for the US (when they changed president at the earliest).

Daniel on FlyingDryden says:
Looks like the mountain picture with the rapids in front is Snasahögarna and Getryggen (far away) and Storulvån in the foreground. Very beautiful area! On the road from Handöl to Storulvån's mountain station (12km) there are plenty of parking pockets to stand on, just as a tip if you have the roads past. 😉

Bali seems to be amazing, especially when you see the pictures and read Christine's blog 29 degrees.

Lena - good for the soul says:
A little fun that the odd destinations Örebro and Mjölby have increased so much at SJ. Örebro is certainly very beautiful, so I am not surprised in that way, but it is not a common holiday destination. at least not in my world.
