In co-operation with the Estonian Tourist Board
We have "climbed" the highest mountain in the Baltics - Suur Munamägi in Estonia. Well, "visited" might be a more accurate term. The walk to the top only took a few minutes. But nice to have been here! After this, new exciting adventures await.
Table of contents
The highest mountain in the Baltics
The highest mountain in the Baltics is Suur Munamägi, located in south-eastern Estonia. The mountain has a height of 318 metres above sea level (or 317.2 metres according to some sources) and rises about 60 metres above the surrounding ground. We're not talking about dizzying heights, but we still wanted to see the highest mountain in the Baltics!
Suur Munamägi in Estonia
We parked at the entrance to Suur Munamägi and started the small hike up. We were quite tired after a long day on the trail. Rally Estoniabut on the other hand, the walk up was very easy.
After a few minutes of walking slightly uphill, we came to a cute little cottage where you could shop for handicrafts. Then it was not far to the top ...
The viewing tower at Suur Munamägi
At the top of Suur Munamägi there is an observation tower. You can get to the top for 4 euros (stairs) or 6 euros (lift). We were satisfied with having reached the highest mountain in the Baltic States. The sounds that's an achievement, isn't it?
Camping Kubija in Võru
By the time we got to Suur Munamägi, we had free-camped for four nights in a row (two nights at the Lake Peipus and two nights in Tartu) and started longing for a proper shower. The closest campsite we found was Kubija hotel and camping i Võru .
Here we could park outside the hotel, and for 15 euros we got access to electricity, water, rubbish collection and a shower room inside the hotel. It suited us perfectly! If we had wanted, there was also the possibility of a spa at the hotel, but right now we were satisfied with the nice showers!
Onward to Latvia
The next day, after the visit to the highest mountain in the Baltics, it was time for us to roll on towards Latvia! We are currently doing a motorhome trip in Estonia, in cooperation with the Estonian Tourist Board, but there was also a detour to Latvia. There is a place and a project in Latvia that we want to visit. really want to tell you about. We will come back to this in the next blog post!
Do you know the capitals of the Baltic countries?
By the way, what about you, do you know the names of the Baltic countries and their capitals? We know them, but still get them mixed up sometimes, especially in English. Can you say the capitals of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania if someone wakes you up in the middle of the night?

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
Plenty to discover. The capitals of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania made me think. I've been to Tallinn and Riga, but not to Vilnius.

Helena says:
I (Helena) was in Vilnius in 1996, but that was so long ago. Should be a new visit on occasion! ??
16 July 2019 - 13:28
Mr Steve says:
It's pretty cool to have climbed a country's highest mountain, even if it's not that high.
The three capitals I can probably manage at all hours of the day. I think.
16 July 2019 - 9:19
Helena says:
Good job with the capitals! 🙂 And yes, it is a bit fun to have been at the highest point. It gets worse in some other countries 😉.
16 July 2019 - 16:33
Ama de casa says:
Haha! Mount Everest next then? 😀 It was very flat there in the Baltics, makes me even more eager to go there. Then I would have gladly paid 2 extra euros to avoid the stairs, but you dared to refuse completely. Yeah, right. "Dare to refuse" should be exchanged for "fear of heights" to make it work 😉.
Sure, I know the capitals of those countries, but if someone wakes me up in the middle of the night, it's their fault if they get the wrong information, whatever the question is 😀.
16 July 2019 - 10:20
Helena says:
Haha, well Mount Everest must be a natural step now, haha... 😉 I sometimes confuse the capitals in English, but I promise not to call you in the middle of the night and ask 😉.
16 July 2019 - 16:35
Anna, New York - My Bite of the Big Apple says:
How cool with the highest mountain (although it was not so high, hihi). What a lot of exciting things you will experience!
16 July 2019 - 10:39
Helena says:
Many nice and fun experiences here! We really like travelling in Estonia! 🙂
16 July 2019 - 16:36
Daniel on FlyingDryden says:
Respect anyway, to have made the mountain. Will it be Kebnekaise next time? 😉
16 July 2019 - 10:43
Helena says:
Haha, yes, it must be a natural development of this "mountain climbing" ... haha 😉 .
16 July 2019 - 16:36
BP says:
Well, at least you were not afraid of heights;-)
The pictures you took in the forest including the one with the little house could have been taken in Sopot actually.
Oh yeah, I can also list the Baltic capitals;-)
16 July 2019 - 20:54
Helena says:
Good point about the capitals! 😉
17 July 2019 - 16:03
Ajli says:
it looks like a nice route for laypeople then, I'd probably manage to get up there 😉 And it's actually tempting!
17 July 2019 - 7:03

Yes, absolutely sure you would manage this little "climb"! 😉 🙂
17 July 2019 - 16:04

Have experienced both Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as very flat. We did not find any mountains to climb.
We have just visited Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, so I can now list them if necessary.
17 July 2019 - 12:41
Helena says:
Well, considering that this is the highest mountain, you are right that it is flat! 😉 And when travelling through the countries you learn, if not sooner!
17 July 2019 - 16:05
Lollo says:
I have followed your journey in Estonia with great pleasure and despite many visits I have learnt new tips. Thank you very much! I have visited the Great Egg Mountain a couple of times! It is close to Latvia so from the top of the tower you can see there.

Lena - good for the soul says:
Hehe, is it so flat in the Baltic region, so the highest mountain is only about 300 metres?!
Well, Tallin I can place. But Riga, hm Latvia maybe?! And the third one I can't think of at all.
Hug Lena

I can. We have travelled around the three countries. Vilnius has a good city station, from where you can take a bus to the centre.
