Buying followers - and other things to know about Instagram
I (Helena) took over our Instagram account @freedomtravelnews from Peter a few months ago. He had grown tired of the channel and I can partly understand why - in the midst of inspiration and beautiful photos, ugliness and dishonesty also thrive.
However, I've come to enjoy Instagram and have engaged in telling "our story" while scrolling through everyone else's stories. When I start something, I like to go all in and I've been reading lots of articles about Instagram to learn how it all works. Here are 10 things I've learnt, from buying followers to the death of Instagram.
Instagram is for regular users
First of all, before we get into the 10 points, we want to emphasise that Instagram is primarily for regular users. The whole point of the app is to be able to share photos and films - and take part in other people's photos and films.
At the same time, Instagram has proved to be an excellent channel for influencers, and the following ten points are perhaps mainly about this type of user. But hopefully it is just as interesting for others - not least for companies that want to collaborate with influencers, of course!
1. Some influencers buy followers on Instagram
After scrolling the followers of a number of infleuncers, I realise that some have bought followers. Purchased followers are quite easy to recognise. They often have no profile photo, sometimes have strange names with numbers in them, and tend to use language we don't understand.
The most obvious is that they come in clusters, preferably several hundred at a time. The followers in the picture are examples of a Swedish influencer's followers, and come in a succession of hundreds of similar ones. Real people that companies want to collaborate to reach? It's up to the companies to decide!
2. It's easy to buy followers (and likes) on Instagram
That buy followers for Instagram is both simple and cheap. All you have to do is Google to find different organisations offering the service. Purchased followers are often robots and not really interested in your content. Therefore, if you want, you can also buy "engagement" - that is, pay for likes and comments in your preferred language. Still, it's not about real people or genuine interest.
3. It can pay penalise buying followers on Instagram
In a way, we have to admit that buying followers on Instagram might be worthwhile in some cases, as some companies only want to work with influencers with a high number of followers (regardless of authenticity). On the other hand, there are major risks. Firstly, you can easily be exposed (and what does that say about credibility?). Secondly, engagement will be low (unless you also regularly buy likes and comments), which is not good for your account.
4. Many companies are (still) only looking at the number of followers?
One of the reasons why some influencers buy followers is that many companies are blind to the number of followers. We've heard companies that have a policy of only working with influencers who have at least 8k or 20k followers.
Of course, this type of policy means that some influencers are tempted to buy a few extra hundred or thousand followers in order to be considered for collaborations. In fact, companies could look at so much more than the follower count (not least because it doesn't always reflect the truth), such as, for example:
- Relevance of the followers (Are they genuine? What countries do they live in? What age?).
- Quality of content (photos and films)
- Engagement from followers (likes and comments)
5. Some influencers are committed to their "Follow/Following ratio"
The "Follower/Following Ratio" refers to the ratio of followers to followers. Regular users often follow about as many people as they are followed by. However, some major artists may have several million followers, while they themselves only follow a small number.
Influencers may also have more followers than they follow themselves, and some struggle to achieve a similar 'status' to celebrities, for example by buying followers (point 1) or by following/unfollowing (point 6). To calculate your "Follow/Following Ratio", take your number of followers and divide it by the number of people you follow. The result can then, according to different sites, be interpreted as follows:
- <0.5 Spammy account
- 0.5-1 Suspicious account
- 1-2 Normal account
- 2-10 Micro-influencers
- 10+ Influencers
6. Follow/unfollow technique is popular (and annoying)
Many Instagram accounts trying to grow on Instagram use the follow/unfollow technique. At best, it involves following others and hoping they follow back - and after a few days, unfollowing those who didn't want to follow back.
The worst case scenario (which is unfortunately very common) is to follow others and hope they follow back - and after a few days unfollow everyone, including those who actually started following. Personally, I think the first variant is ok, while the second is both annoying and cheeky.
7. you can verify your account - if you succeed
Have you noticed that some Instagram accounts have a blue tick after their username? This means that the account is verified by Instagram and that the user is who he/she/company claims to be.
Anyone can register their desire to be verified and the application process is relatively simple (go to "settings" and "account" and "request verification"), but getting the request accepted is more difficult. To be accepted, you must have an account that is "authentic, unique, complete and noteworthy".
8. you can plan your flow with apps
Have you noticed that some accounts look amazing with perfectly colour-matched photos? It's not easy to plan your feed so that it looks like that, but in addition to time and energy, some influencers also use apps to plan their feed in advance. In these, you can also set colour themes, so that you get a consistent look. It looks professional of course, but also requires a lot of planning.
9. Stories are more popular than feeds
Among long-time Instagram users, "Instagram Stories" (events) seems to be much more popular than the traditional photo feed. Maybe it's because the demand for photos has increased and Stories has replaced what Instagram was once intended to be - an app where you can quickly post a simple and personalised here-and-now greeting. Stories themselves only last 24 hours, but if you want to, you can save them in "albums" so they're still there.
10. Instagram will die
Last but not least: Instagram will die. At least if you believe Alexander Bard. And maybe that's the case, that Instagram will die? We are primarily focusing on our blog, but as long as Instagram lives, we will be there too. Welcome to follow us on @freedomtravelnews!

I like your instagram, so I hope you will continue with it 🙂.

Thank you very much! Great to hear! And yes, we will continue on Insta! ??

Anna / boihusbil.se says:
What a coincidence, tomorrow we will publish how we think about the different channels, including Instagram. We don't buy followers and we follow back when the content seems interestingz no locked accounts are followed if we don't know who is behind them.
28 August 2019 - 9:39
Helena says:
How funny! It will be interesting to read what you write! I feel the same way about locked accounts. I also hope it was clear that we think that buying followers is both dishonest and completely wrong! That's a bit why we wanted to bring it up ...
28 August 2019 - 13:35
Anna / boihusbil.se says:
Yes, it was clear 🙂 A question, could you click that checkbox in the admin that means you don't have to fill in all the information every time?
28 August 2019 - 21:13
Helena says:
Is there such a box? Why? I will try to check, but please let me know if you know where! I understand that it's hard to fill in every time, so if I can make it easier, I'm happy to do so.
28 August 2019 - 21:22
Helena says:
Now I found a box that I ticked ... can it be right? I can't see for myself, maybe because I'm logged in?
28 August 2019 - 21:24
Anna / boihusbil.se says:
Yes, absolutely right, thank you!
01 September 2019 - 7:47
Helena says:
Great! And thank you for suggesting the box!!! 🙂

What a great post!
I admire your knowledge and am glad you are sharing it.
Some things I knew, but far from all. Some things I didn't really understand, but that's me.
Take care!

Helena says:
Perhaps I was unclear on some point? It can happen sometimes when you are "inside" something, although my intention is of course to make it understandable!!!!

Maria's memoirs says:
Very interesting post! But I certainly don't perceive myself as spammy because I follow slightly more accounts than follow me. And I only follow accounts that appeal to me, as well as some people I know irl who may not always have such interesting feeds for sure. On the contrary, I still think it is important to give and take, just like in blogs, so I like other people's pictures and often thank my active followers by also being active with them. So I have many loyal followers who like my photos regularly ? I think the same partly with blogs, it is more likely I leave comments with the bloggers who are also active in commenting in other blogs.
28 August 2019 - 11:15
Helena says:
"Spammy" can probably be taken with a pinch of salt. I agree that it can be completely normal to want to follow many more people than you are followed by! I think they are thinking of accounts that use robots to mass follow, to get followers themselves. I probably think like you. I follow partly interesting accounts and partly accounts that belong to friends and relatives, regardless of the relevance of the account 😉 Also agree with you about giving and taking!
28 August 2019 - 13:40
Memoirs of Mary says:
Interesting about stories and feed too. I use both diligently, but I must say that I don't care so much about perfect colour scales and balance in my feed, it can live a little ? Occasionally I can plan about 3 pictures that should match each other, or think that now I have to post a different kind of picture so that two cat pictures do not end up right next to each other, but absolutely no thought about the flow as a whole. Maybe that's why I don't feel any stress or anxiety about it as some people seem to do.
28 August 2019 - 11:20
Helena says:
I don't plan the feed much either, I can be impressed by others who do! And yes, it might reduce that stress! ??
28 August 2019 - 13:42
Goatfish says:
Yes, that has been realised. That some people buy followers.
I only follow those that are inspiring, diverse and have quality. No locked accounts and anything that smacks of ego goes away.
I follow Freedomtravel happily 😀

That sounds like a good starting point! And glad you want to follow us! 🙂

Maria/ Magnolia Magis says:
Interesting and things I haven't even thought about! To buy followers... Hm... Don't understand the point, well except to get companies interested. No thanks!!! Now I have to check our insta accounts!
I find it difficult to follow others who have chosen to follow. Our open account for the Defender, for example. What to do with private accounts from acquaintances?... That's not something Defender people are interested in. We have chosen to follow those we find interesting in the genre and with open accounts.
Yes instagram is fun and I hope it lasts a while longer! See you there! ??
28 August 2019 - 12:32
Helena says:
No, we would never think of buying followers. For us it feels both totally uninteresting and completely wrong, in ALL ways really. And yes, it can be a bit difficult to know what to do with the following sometimes. Good to make such a decision that you can then go after!
28 August 2019 - 18:40
Ama de casa says:
I don't have Instagram at all, the blog is more than enough. But buying followers? No thanks. Soooo stupid I think! But on the other hand, it's also about money... Well, not for me, but for many others, I've realised.
28 August 2019 - 13:40
Helena says:
Yes, that's right ... For us it has always been completely out of question, I wouldn't even consider the idea of buying followers. Seems completely absurd!? But it definitely exists and is not uncommon either.
28 August 2019 - 18:42
Ditte says:
Well, what don't some people do to be seen! Have read about buying followers but do not understand the point. If you are good enough, you get "bites anyway". I have understood that many serious companies that want to cooperate check more than just the number of followers on Instagram. They are aware that it is possible to buy followers.
I only follow those on Instagram that I find interesting in some way and can't say that the colour-coordinated images speak to me. They often feel artificial even in terms of colour. But if it's about special things then ...
I also remove/hide events for some completely rogue accounts that I see in my "stories". Don't want just anyone on there
28 August 2019 - 13:49
Helena says:
Totally agree with you! However, "getting a bite" is not so easy anymore with the great competition, so even accounts with nice content can have difficulty reaching out. But that does not change the fact that purchased followers are uninteresting followers, so I still think it's a strange decision. I can partly agree with you that colour-coordinated images can sometimes be too artificial. Interesting to be able to hide events in stories, I haven't tried that.

I Instagram more or less every day and completely for my own sake, although it's fun when I get feedback.
I mostly post pictures of the dogs and the nature around me.
I have two accounts besides my own so to speak, one for each dog 😀.
Dislike people who start following and then unfollow a week later, but also people who follow and never even bother to read 😉 my posts.
Have a nice Wednesday 🙂
28 August 2019 - 13:55
Helena says:
Yes, of course it feels sad if someone starts following only to unfollow, and especially if you yourself followed back then! Sure, it can be sad when followers don't like, but it can also sometimes be that they don't see your posts in their feed? Instagram's algorithms are a bit strange ...
28 August 2019 - 18:46
ridge says:
Yes You are right, I also miss several people I follow as their posts do not end up in my feed.

Sofia / Fantasy travel says:
Great summary! I think Instagram is tricky today and probably belongs to those who focus most on stories. I think it is both more fun and provides higher engagement and more of a feeling of actually having a live contact with my followers (since I blog so rarely and do not get it through the blog). It will be interesting to see if it dies out, not entirely impossible... Go blog!
28 August 2019 - 15:49
Helena says:
Glad you like our post Sofia! Yes, go for the blog! 🙂 I also try my hand at stories. Don't know if I have found my way in yet, but quite fun!

Tia says:
I agree that these "spammers" are annoying. Sometimes I would just like to be able to delete a follower who I know is not following out of interest but to attract me and my followers to follow. Would never buy followers!
28 August 2019 - 21:28
Helena says:
I have read somewhere that you can delete followers, but I don't know how to do that?
29 August 2019 - 10:27
Lena - good for the soul says:
Interesting post! That thing about buying followers and likes! Oh my god! How do you think. I would never ever buy followers. So dishonest and really really embarrassing because many times it is so obvious. I even delete followers sometimes. Every week different blokes start following me. Locked account, probably from the US, often dressed in uniform, like 15 followers but follow 6000, describe themselves as loving, passionate, caring blah blah blah. I don't want to base my account on them. I want genuinely interested people.
Don't care about the quota (thanks for the explanation), but that's because I'm not very strategic and don't have my accounts as a business.
The thing about unfollowing because of strategy also feels so fake. Sure, it happens that I unfollow too, but then it's because the account doesn't give me anything and I sometimes need to reduce the flow due to stress.
To be honest, I often find those perfectly planned flows uninteresting and feel inauthentic. It's just the same old thing all the time. Nothing I'm attracted to.
I have only recently "found" Stories and I like it! Doesn't feel so pretentious!
I post what I feel like and want to be perceived as genuine and authentic. These are also the kind of accounts that appeal to me.
Hug Lena

Thanks for the interesting comment! How do you go about deleting followers? I have read about it somewhere, but do not know how to do it? How funny with those strange followers you get!!!? Can actually agree that it sometimes gets boring with too perfect feeds, even if they are nice.

Oh my goodness! If you had written this post in Chinese, I probably wouldn't have understood as much as I do now. The world of Instagram and FB is completely foreign to me. Just as well, if I've understood your post correctly, the little bit I hated. But I learnt a new word anyway: unfollow. What's wrong with "leave"...?
28 August 2019 - 22:07
Helena says:
Haha... but I get it! If you don't use Instagram, it won't be easy to understand!!!! Unfollow ... that's when you stop following a specific account. Leaving might sound more like leaving Instagram completely?
