Szczecin in Poland

Szczecin, or Stettin as it may also be called, is a port city in northwestern Poland, and also the capital of West Pomerania. It is Poland's seventh largest city and is connected to the Baltic Sea through the Oder Lagoon. We came here by sailing through the Oder Lagoonand have now looked around this super nice city.

What to do in Szczecin?

Szczecin has a colourful history and over the years has belonged to Germany, Denmark, Sweden and even France for a short period. This means that there are all sorts of attractions in Szczecin!

1st Spana in Chrobry Embankment (Hook Terrace)

The Chobry Embankment, or Hakenterrasse as it is called in German, is home to some of the city's most impressive buildings. There's also a terrace and a wide staircase with great views of the water.

2. Impressed by the Mieczysława Karłowicza Concert Hall

An unusual attraction in Szczecin is the Mieczysława Karłowicza Concert Hall. The architecture is unlike any other building in the city and was initially criticised, but has since received awards for its design. There are also two beautiful concert halls, which unfortunately were not open to visitors when we were there.

3. see the Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty in Szczecin recalls a tragic event that took place in the city in 1970. The population protested against the regime, and the government responded by shooting at the crowd. A total of 16 people died, most of them young people.

4. Admire Szczecin Castle (Pomeranian Castle)

Szczecin's impressive castle dates back to the 15th century, but was badly damaged during World War II. Now the castle has been renovated and can once again be seen in its former glory. Peter managed to entice Martina, one of the public relations officers for the project, to pose for a photo as king and queen (yes, that's Peter in the queen photo...). At the castle you can also see the carillon with the Swedish lions. Szczecin belonged to Sweden for 90 years, so there is a Swedish history here.

5. Discover the Cathedral of Szczecin

Szczecin Cathedral is the largest church in West Pomerania and very impressive.

6. Strolling in the Old Town

Much of Sczcezin was destroyed during the war, and what was the old neighbourhood was bombed. Now some of the houses have been rebuilt to look exactly as they did originally.

7. Try local specialities

We visited a small place called Pasztecik, which retains the feel of the socialist era. Here you can order the speciality "paztecik", a small fried treat, with different fillings, such as meat, cheese or vegetables. A nostalgic place for many!

8. try locally produced beer

We tried locally produced beer at the Stara Komenda brewery in Szczecin. We also tasted some typical Polish accessories such as homemade bread, pickled cucumbers, sausages and pig fat. Always good!

9. Experience a festival

We arrived in Szczecin in time for the Pyromagic festival. Fantastic! Lots of people in the city centre and lots of different water activities and competitions.

In the evening it was time for fireworks. I (Helena) usually think that fireworks are relatively boring. Now, together with choreography and music, it was a great show.

The sailing journey continues

We will soon continue our sailing journey with Bavaria C50. We will later update this post with some more facts. What we want to say now is that you should not hesitate to travel to Szczecin. There is a very nice guest harbour for boats here, and right next to it there is an equally nice caravan park. If you are travelling by other means, hotels are of course available. Welcome to Szczecin in Poland!
