Holidays in Dalmatia
Dalmatia is one of four regions in Croatia and is located in the southern part of the country, along the Adriatic Sea. It is home to many of the most popular tourist resorts in Croatia, such as Zadar, Šibenik, Split, Makarska and Dubrovnik. Off the coast, the islands are densely populated and some of the most famous include Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Vis. Here are ten tips for great places to visit!

1. island of Pag
Pag is an elongated windswept island known for its salt production, its special sheep cheese and its beautiful sandy beaches. You can come here to sunbathe and swim, enjoy beautiful scenery and discover the island's history.

2nd Kungastaden Nin
Nin has over 3000 years of history and is also the city where the first Croatian kings lived. Here you can find a Roman temple and the world's smallest cathedral. Nin is also known for its long and beautiful sandy beaches.

3. zadar
Zadar is an exciting coastal city, full of history from different eras and modern attractions such as the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun. Zadar is also an excellent starting point for excursions to national parks and islands in the Croatian archipelago.

4. trogir
Trogir is a fantastic old medieval town. Situated on a small island between the mainland and a larger island, the old town centre is surrounded by a 15th century city wall. There is a 14th century castle and the narrow alleys sell summer dresses, jewellery and genuine sponges.

5. Split
We have visited Split several times, and love this historic city, with its arches and sturdy palace walls. Diocletian's Palace in Split was built in the 200s, and Roman knights still wander around the city for the benefit of tourists. Split also offers plenty of pleasant outdoor cafes, a lovely promenade and a quay with ferries to the various islands of the Croatian archipelago.

6. Omiš
The small town Omiš is almost unbelievably beautiful as it is sandwiched between high mountains, with the great river Cetina running right through it. This city was known in the 13th and 14th centuries as the city of pirates. The feared gangs used fast boats to attack merchant ships at the mouth of the river, and then quickly made their escape upstream. Today, the river is used for much quieter boat trips for tourists, through the intense greenery.

7. island of Brač
Feel free to visit the island Brač during your holiday in Dalmatia! On the island, you can relax in the popular tourist resort of Supetar, or cross the island to the village of Bol. Here you'll find the famous Zlatni Rat beach, which sometimes appears on lists of the best beaches in Europe or even the world. The most magical time to be here is just before or just after high season.

8th Makarska
Who has not heard of Makarska Riviera? The centre of this Riviera is of course the resort of Makarska. We thought there were perhaps a few too many Scandinavian tourists here, but on the other hand we loved the dramatic mountains, the shimmering green sea water and the long fine promenade. This is also the place where we saw the most squirrels at one time, ever.

9th Island of Hvar
Where is both the name of an island and the name of the largest city on the same island. There's a lot of boating going on here, and you can spend a lot of time looking at everything from fishing boats to luxury yachts. There is also a lot of history on this island. The town of Stari Grad, founded by the Greeks in 384 BC, is the oldest town in Croatia. Not to be missed during your holiday in Dalmatia!

10. Dubrovnik
I Dubrovnik you can expect to be crowded with many other tourists, but you can do so in a historically stunning setting. The historic parts of the city are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and if you want, you can climb the six-metre high walls for views of both the sea and the city. If you're more of a fiction than a history buff, Dubrovnik has been the setting for many scenes in the TV series Game of Thrones.

Marianne - Glimpses of the world says:
I have not been that far south in Croatia, but I have been to Rovinj, Pula and Rijeka in the north. I liked Rovinj, and the ruins of the amphitheatre in Pula were quite impressive.

Mr Denis says:
A small correction. Dalmatia is in the southern part of Croatia and with a more accurate description Dalmatia is in the south-eastern part of the country. In the southwestern part of Croatia is Istria which has its pearls as Marianne has already mentioned.
Additional destinations to pay attention to in Dalmatia: Korcula, Cavtat, Bol, Nin, Biograd na moru, Knin, Vodice, Kastela, Imotski, Vis, Komiza, Sinj etc.

Helena says:
Denis, thanks for your comment! I can agree that the southern part is a better description and will change it! However, not eastern, as there is a large part of Croatia (further north) that extends much further east. Wikipedia describes Dalmatia as southwest, but as I said, I agree that south is better! Thanks also for tips on additional places (we have visited some of them, but not all), there are so many nice places in Croatia!

Marianne, there are also many nice places in Istria, I agree!
