Now we have done both an inspection and a major service of the motorhome, including replacement of the cam belt. We have also bought new batteries and checked what applies to new plastic conversion and to repair stone chips in the front windscreen. Work on the renovation of our motorhome, the FREEDOM 2.0 project, continues.

Major motorhome servicing
We handed in FREEDOM for a major service of the motorhome, including cam belt replacement, while we went on a sailing trip in Poland and Germany. Kihlströms Transport & Lastbilscenter in Spånga carried out the service, which meant, among other things, that they connected the car to a diagnostic computer, did a function check and went through such things as oil filters, water pump kit, air filters, cabin filters and more. For this we had to pay about SEK 21,000.
Correction of reported errors
We had also reported a number of faults, which we wanted them to look at and give us a quote for. When we picked up the car, they had forgotten this, but now they have checked the faults and given us a price.
- The clutch pedal sometimes gets stuck at the bottomand this is apparently due to a gasket behind the pedals releasing, and then the clutch ends up at the bottom and doesn't come up.
- The brakes are worn and rustyand according to Kihlströms we can change both discs and brake pads.
For the two items above, we have been given a price of just over £22,000. We are now considering fixing the clutch pedal and changing the brake pads (but not the discs). The discs are a little rusty but there is nothing wrong with them ... We will return with a decision.
Inspection of a motorhome
Saturday morning it was time for the inspection of the motorhome, which we did at Opus bilprovning in Vallentuna. Most things were ok, but we got some things that are so-called "self-responsibility". That is, we should take action, but we do not need to return for a new inspection. The most important was that we should change the front tyres, and this was expected and we plan to change both front tyres.
New batteries in your motorhome
You may recall that we had a problem with the fact that charge your caravan's batteries? Since the living room batteries were really old and since we let the batteries discharge during the winter (we know, not good!), we simply decided to buy new batteries. We bought a new starter battery and two new body batteries at Biltema.
The strange thing is that the meter still shows that the batteries are only half charged. We think there must be something wrong with the meter, and Peter plans to go through the fuses and see if any are not working. Or perhaps you have another suggestion?
Find out about plastic conversion
The plastic conversion, i.e. the black/grey foil around the motorhome, was done by the company BrandFactory ten years ago. We were very happy, but the car has worn out after intensive use and several winters outdoors. Peter drove to BrandFactory again and they have now taken a lot of photos of the motorhome so they can come back with a price quote.
Check for stone chips
We have six stone chips in the windscreen and Peter drove to Ryds bilglas to check what can be done. You can either repair them (100 SEK per stone chip) or replace the entire windscreen, and then you pay 1500 SEK in excess (the price depends on which insurance company you have). We have decided to replace the entire window, but since the motorhome will probably have to stay outside this winter, we will wait and do this around April next year.
This week's planning
We have two cushions and a driver's seat that has been reupholstered and the seams have come loose, and we need to take these in to be repaired. Of course, we can't do this at the same time as taking the car to Fiat, as we don't have a driver's seat.
We will also order four roof hatches, a side hatch, a latrine hatch and a water intake hatch. In addition, we will be ordering a gas hose, chairs, tables and a few things that have worn out over the years. The new motorhome is on its way!
Across the board says:
A good fiat workshop is valuable to have within reach. You seem to have found the right one there. And made a lot of progress with the rest too!

We are really starting and have come a long way, and it feels good! A lot left too, but as long as you are on the track, it feels better 🙂 ðŸ™'

Anna / boihusbil.se says:
What a complete renovation you are doing! Regarding stone chips, it is good that you change the entire windscreen when there are so many. (When R worked at Ryds and when we ran our own glaziery, the insurance companies did not approve repairs if there were more than 3 stone chips).

Ismo Vehkakoski says:
The car/caravan battery indicator cannot be relied upon. You need a separate voltmeter. Biltema has such, reliable and not expensive either.

Helena says:
Ismo, thank you very much for the comment and tips! I will pass this on to Peter!

Helena says:
Anna, yes now it's a complete renovation! And thanks for the comment about stone chips! Then it sounds like we are doing the right thing!

Solan says:
We have the same workshop and are happy with it.
But if Freedom is to be left outside in the winter...aren't there modern tarpaulins for protection?
We've found a car wash in Kungsängen with a stand that makes it easy to keep the roof clean.
Good luck with Freedom's makeover!?

Helena says:
Thanks for your comment about tarpaulin Solan! That could be smart, I'll talk to Peter about it. And thanks for the car wash tip!!!

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Wow, that's quite something! Had it not been easier and cheaper to buy a new car ...! 😀
I think it might be smart to change the window instead of repairing the stone cone. We had one and the "repairman" warned us that it is possible that it would not be possible to repair as the hole was where the glass was rounded. And no, it did not, there was a crack instead so in the end the window had to be replaced anyway. Now this was many years ago and technology has certainly advanced. But as I said ...
25 August 2019 - 11:22
Helena says:
It would have been easier, but not cheaper. We did the maths and simply couldn't afford to change motorhomes. Thanks for the tips on windscreen and stone chips, sounds like we're making the right decision!

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
It's good that the inspection went well so there were no more points to fix.
We think you've come a long way with Freedom. Next spring it should be fit for fight again!
25 August 2019 - 21:52
Helena says:
Yes, we bet that Freedom will be fit for fight in the spring! (We also expect to be able to drive down to Elmia even if everything will not be ready then, far from it).
25 August 2019 - 22:53
BP says:
I am inclined to agree with Emma there, a new motorhome would not have been completely wrong there. I think I wrote that in an earlier comment too. Still funny that Freedom passed the inspection.
25 August 2019 - 22:38
Helena says:
We've thought about a new motorhome, but we just can't afford it. We've done the maths and there's a big difference in price, so we didn't have much choice.

Maria/ Magnolia Magis says:
Wow! What a renovation! I am curious about the new foiling! Keep up the good work!

Glad that the renovation is progressing! Maybe we'll see you on the road in the future!
