Holidaying in Sweden
Holidaying in Sweden has become increasingly popular for a number of reasons. The weather has been really good in recent years, the Swedish krona is doing poorly and many people want to holiday in a way that is sustainable for the environment. So, where should you go if you want to experience long, beautiful sandy beaches in Sweden?
Sweden's best beaches
There are plenty of fine beaches in Sweden and which ones are the 'best' can of course depend on taste. For a beach to be considered really good, you might think of a long sandy beach with soft, fine-grained sand and a fine sandy bottom under the surface of the water. The surroundings can also play a role, and the experience can be influenced by nature and the range of restaurants and entertainment. According to a list of the 5 best Swedish beaches in 2019, the top list looks like this:
- Tylösand, Halmstad
- Böda Sand, Öland
- Skanör & Falsterbo, Skåne
- Pite sea baths, Piteå
- Sandhammers, Ystad
Tylösand beach
Tylösand is first on the list above, with its four kilometres of sandy beach. At the beach you can sunbathe and swim or rent different kinds of boats, and there are also lifeguards in a lifeguard tower. Around the area you will find restaurants, cafés, After Beach, golf courses and mini-golf. There is also a campsite and several large and small hotels. The most famous is Hotel Tylösand, owned by Per Gessle.
I (Helena) spent all my summers as a child in Tylösand, as my family has a summer cottage there. We mostly swam on the rocky beaches around, or on the beaches called "Tjuvahålan" and "Svärjarehålan", but despite that I have swum countless times on Stora stranden in Tylösand. I remember the beach as very nice with soft fine-grained sand.
Unfortunately, the fine sand moves upwards and settles in large drifts well away from the beach, while the sand on the beach becomes thin and hard. A lot of effort should be put into planning how to bind the sand (e.g. through fences, barriers and plantings), but unfortunately far too little is done.
Tylösand is amazingly beautiful in many ways, but unfortunately we believe that in the future it may be difficult for Tylösand beach to make it to the top of the list of Sweden's best beaches if no one does anything about the sand drift.
So what are Sweden's best beaches?
Of the beaches on the list, we have visited Tylösand beach and Pite havsbad. When we visited Pite havsbad it was unfortunately very cold, so we have no lasting memory of the beach. We have not been to Böda sand, but we have been to the beach in Löttorp on Öland. This is a long and beautiful beach with soft, lovely sand.

Ditte says:
I rarely go to beaches for sunbathing and swimming, but I like to walk along the sea. I think the best beach is Norsta Auren on Fårö, which has everything and more. And absolutely no crowds here.

Fårö sounds interesting! Never been there, but would love to make a visit at some point!

hello
I also spent my childhood summers in Tylösand, we had one of the nice white little cottages. And I remember it as long lovely summers with a lot of swimming.

What fun that you also spent the summers in Tylösand as a child Anna-Kari! 🙂 Not so far from us then. Our cottage is a summer cottage not so far from Svärjarehålan / Little Beach.

Not liking sandy beaches may be like swearing in church, but thank goodness for the cliffs of Bohuslän. We probably had enough of sandy beaches when the kids were little and we had sand everywhere including on sandwiches and in drinks.
However, there is a lovely sandy beach in Lake Vänern, outside Lidköping, called Svalnäs. Once there, it is a real "riviera".

Haha, I've heard more people who don't like sandy beaches 😉 I like sandy beaches, but also rocky beaches 🙂 And thanks for the beach tips!!!!

Böda is nice but there are many nice beaches on Öland. I grew up having spent the summer on Öland and we always went to Bläsinge, it was just straight down from grandma's summer house. I know that for a while it was very popular to park your motorhome or caravan down by the car park. There is nothing organised, no toilets or sales, a pure natural beach. Or so it used to be, now it's been a long time since I was there.
Googled around in a hurry now and the beach looks as nice as ever!

Svalnäs, outside Lidköping, is an absolutely wonderful sandy beach. You think you are at the Mediterranean. Absolutely huge there by Lake Vänern. Then I must say that Lidköping has several long fine sandy beaches, miles and miles.
I've also spent a lot of time on Öland, and the Homrevet is the attraction at the top of northern Öland, on the eastern side north of Böda Sand.

Wonder why they have forgotten to include Byske Havsbad on the list? It is a huge long and lovely sandy beach. (Although when I saw it again a few years ago, it had shrunk in some way 😉 ).

We live in Skanör, so of course I say the beaches in Skanör and Falsterbo. The sand is white, the water is crystal clear and Skanör's harbour has a great atmosphere with many nice restaurants. The beaches in Höllviken and Ljunghusen, which are 5 km away, are also very nice. We have a short distance to our three beaches in Skanör and Falsterbo so you are a bit spoilt.

Sweden has some amazing places.
I usually share information and tips, but not this time. I have my favourite spot on the West Coast, but I don't want to share it, it's very private and I'd like to keep it that way.
Take care!
