Apps for travelling
Here are a few tips for travelling apps that can help you plan your trip, find the best restaurant or help you in an emergency. We use several of these regularly and some others I downloaded when I read about them - to try them out. It's all about finding the ones you like best ...
3 apps to plan your trip
- Booking.com is an app where you can easily book hotels and other accommodation around the world. You can also see directly in the app how other users have rated the accommodation.
- Packing point is used by filling in where you are travelling, how long you plan to be away and what you will be doing while travelling. The app then delivers a finalised packing list.
- Wowanders is a travel diary where you can recommend places you visited during your trip to others, whether they have the app or not. You can also get travel tips from your friends and from travel bloggers.
3 apps for the car/caravan journey
- Google Maps has both maps and GPS functionality. Even though we have GPS in the car, we use Google Maps from time to time - including when the other GPS can't find it.
- CamperContact is a handy app for finding campsites, pitches and rest areas. You can search by location or ask the app to find sites near your current location.
- My vehicles is an app from the Swedish Transport Agency. At the touch of a button, you can switch your car on and off and avoid paying full insurance when you are not using the vehicle.
3 apps for air travel
- The Flight Tracker is an app that gives you information from all the world's airports. You can search for a specific flight and see if the flight is delayed, which gate to go to, etc.
- Trip case is an app that collects information about bookings and information about changes to the streets and the like. We have only just downloaded this and have not had time to test it.
- Flightradar24 helps you see all the planes that are in the air right now, and where they are going. Possibly not entirely necessary, but quite fun if nothing else.
3 apps to find restaurants and attractions
- TripAdvisor is a useful app where you can find personalised reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions around the world.
- Happy Cow is for those who are vegetarian or vegan. This app helps you find vegan-friendly restaurants around the world.
- LikeALocal is an app to help you find cool places and hidden gems in different cities, using tips from people living in the cities.
3 apps to communicate
- Google Translate translates between more than 100 different languages. In the major languages, you can also have words and sentences read out to you.
- Duolingo helps you learn a new language, or at least some practical phrases that you might need while travelling.
- key note is the app for those who miss sending postcards. With this app, you can send personalised postcards based on your own photos.
3 apps to keep track of your finances
- XE Currency helps you keep track of how the krona compares to the currency of the country you are in.
- Trail Wallet helps you get an overview of how you spend your money while travelling. You record expenses under different headings to keep track of your travel finances.
- BankID is used to identify yourself to banks and the Swedish Tax Agency when travelling. BankID also facilitates login and quick registration in other contexts, such as when you want to gamble casino with bank IDwhere nowadays it is easier to verify yourself.
3 apps to save you in times of need
- Around me is an app that helps you see what's nearby - ATMs, petrol stations, supermarkets, car parks, hospitals and much more.
- Flush shows you where to find a toilet. If you allow the app to access your location info, it will suggest all the closest toilets.
- Red Cross First Aid contains simple and clear information on what to do in case of asthma attacks, poisoning, burns, sprains, etc.
3 apps to cut down on dead time while waiting for a flight/train/ferry
- Instagram is the ideal app for uploading photos from your trip, while keeping in touch with your loved ones and seeing what they're up to.
- Bloglovin is perfect for those who prefer to read blogs. This app gathers all the blogs you follow in one place and shows you who has updated with a new blog post.
- Quiz camps is for those who like quizzes. We played a lot several years ago and want to absolutely not start again - the risk is that you get stuck and we don't have time for that ...
More smart apps for travelling?
This was just a selection of apps for travelling, and there are of course many others. Do you have a favourite app that you always use when travelling that you would like to recommend?
Johanna Petersson says:
Hello!
We are a family considering a motorhome (we currently have a caravan). You write that you can switch it on and off to reduce insurance. How does grease work? I have calculated 500 insurance each month and 500 in tax each month. Is that a high estimate now? Does the tax decrease when you switch off? Can I ask what you pay per month in insurance and tax on the motorhome?
Hope for an answer!

Hi Johanna! Glad you are thinking about a motorhome! Yes, you can switch the motorhome on and off easily with the app. There is a very big difference in what you pay in insurance when you have it parked or unparked, so it's worth it. You used to be able to switch it on and off as often as you wanted, but now there is a rule that there must be 14 days in between. When it comes to tax, there can be quite a difference. Of course, there are many good apps to help us when travelling. Google Maps works great even when walking in cities, Google Trsnslate has helped us a lot and Campercontact is the best campsite app.
Like A Local is something I will look at more closely.
We also use Mapstr where we add both pitches, hotels, bars and attractions, both those we have visited and those we have been advised by others. Really good we think.

Yes, that's right, I've heard of Mapstr! Sounds interesting! Thanks for the tips! Like a Local doesn't seem too bad. I have recently started using it!

I use Google Translate a lot, and it has been very helpful. Google Maps on the computer is a must, but on the iPhone you almost need a magnifying glass to figure out the maps.

Flightradar is, by far, one of the most used apps when travelling. I wonder why. Hehe.

...and SplitWise is also an app that we use when travelling. Perfect for keeping track of who paid what and how much one person owes the other and so on.
