Hottest European destinations for autumn holidays
As the summer draws to a close, many people are keen to plan an autumn trip. The hotel and travel search site momondo.se has looked at which five European destinations are trending for this year's autumn holidays. London is once again at the top, and this year's rising star is Barcelona, which is the most popular destination.
Trendiest Mediterranean destinations for autumn
The summer heat is coming to an end even in the Mediterranean, but there are still some destinations that offer pleasant temperatures. Here are the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean during September and October, according to a press release from Resia:
- Charter favourite: Rhodes
- Last-minute favourite: Crete
- The destinations that are trending: Sicily, Zakynthos, Corfu and Samos
Pilot project on Viking Line reduced food waste
In four months, Viking Line's cruise ship Mariella has reduced food waste from on-board restaurants by 40 per cent, according to a press release from Viking Line. During the period, food waste has been reduced by about 27 tonnes, which corresponds to 70,000 food portions. The food waste that still occurs is in turn used to produce biogas. One of the success factors has been to replace larger serving vessels with smaller portions.
Students choose train over plane and car
Students travel more climate-smart than Swedes in general. Their train travel increased by 26 per cent in the first half of this year and many more choose trains over planes and cars. These are some of the conclusions in SJ's report on students' travel habits, which is based on a Sifo survey and SJ's statistics. The report also shows that female students choose trains to a greater extent than male students.
Foreign tourists dream of Swedish nature
When foreign tourists dream of Sweden from their computers at home, they most often type in keywords about nature. And interest is growing rapidly - last year the number of online nature experience searches rose by 28 per cent, according to a press release from Visit Sweden. These are the most common nature-related topics (each topic includes different keywords such as northern lights or ice hotel) that foreign tourists Google before travelling to Sweden:
- Camping
- natural phenomenon
- Unique properties
- Winter sports
- Hiking
Big increase in travel to Egypt
Almost half of Swedish foreign tourists want to travel to Sweden. Egypt according to a survey conducted by Apollo in collaboration with Sifo. The main attractions are the country's sights and world heritage sites, followed by beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and snorkelling. Apollo states that Egypt bookings have increased the most in percentage terms this year, compared to other winter destinations.

Nice that Sicily has become trendy. Only been a quick visit to the island but seems to have a lot to offer.

Sicily is certainly full of a lot of history, no less! And lots to see!

I usually take the bus to one of the hottest autumn destinations. Not so climate smart perhaps, but unfortunately the train line from Torrevieja to Alicante is cancelled... 😉.

Helena says:
You do not have so far! And a bit difficult to take the train when the train line is down 😉.

I'm glad that both Istanbul and Egypt have become popular travel destinations again.
Of course, we understand that our Swedish nature attracts foreign tourists and also our right of public access, which makes it possible to hike, walk and so on.

Helena says:
Agreed! We are going to visit Egypt soon. I am curious about Istanbul!

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Don't students usually have pretty good discounts on trains? I think the train is quite expensive, actually, so it's just as appealing. We paid almost 4000 SEK for three people Malaga-Madrid-Malaga and I don't think that's cheap anyway. Not when you see that people can fly to another country for half that price.
If tickets were cheaper, more people would probably take the train, or at least see it as an option.

Helena says:
Oh yeah, students probably have a discount? The price you mention sounds quite expensive actually. We recently travelled by train between Skåne and Stockholm, but didn't feel that it was quite so expensive (but don't remember now exactly what we paid). Of course the price matters!

I don't care one bit about trendy destinations, we go where we want to go. No matter what.
I have visited Egypt a few times but it does not attract me anymore. I thought the last time I was there that it was tricky to move freely as a woman and on my own. (Had a similar experience from Morocco.) And the idea of staying at an "all inclusive" does not attract me. Have done it when I have been on site to dive and then it was the diving I would spend most time on.
But Egypt has a lot of history and I have had the privilege of learning about it. Really exciting.
Fun with your trip to Egypt and I am happy to follow along via the blog.

Helena says:
No, I don't care about trendy destinations either. But sometimes you can get new ideas! 🙂 Around Egypt there are many different opinions, and I can kind of understand that. Now I look forward to the trip really much! It will be fun to see how we experience Egypt this time! 🙂

Given the bankruptcy of Vings today, Apollo and Fritidsresor will probably laugh all the way to the bank and sell extra many trips to destinations where charter is still more "in", such as Egypt, Rhodes and Crete.
The reduction in food waste is really great. I think it is often the buffet's "fault" that the waste is so great.
23 September 2019 - 18:13
Helena says:
Buffets must be awful in terms of food waste. Very good if they can reduce it. It should be good for everyone, including them! (Didn't catch the news of Thomas Cook's bankruptcy before we published, but it's otherwise the biggest travel news right now!)
