With a wheelchair in a motorhome? Adapting a regular motorhome for a wheelchair can be expensive, but now BluCamp presents a mass-produced motorhome for people with mobility impairments. In addition to the fact that the motorhome is adapted in every possible way, the price is reduced to match a "regular" motorhome. Fantastic fun to finally see a motorhome that is also suitable for people with a physical disability!

With a wheelchair in a motorhome?
So far, travelling with a wheelchair in a motorhome has been quite tricky. Adapting an "ordinary" motorhome can be an expensive affair. The solution can be a mass-produced motorhome, and this is what is presented by the Italian brand BluCamp.
The motorhome has previously been available in Italy, but it is only now that it is on the market in Sweden. As many readers may know, I (Helena) work with disability and accessibility issues, so I was delighted to see this initiative. We took the opportunity to check out the motorhome during the last burning hours of the fair. Scandinavian Caravan Show.
BluCamp Sky Free
The BluCamp Sky Free is built on a Fiat chassis and is 7.12 metres long. The basic total weight is 3.5 tonnes, but the vehicle can be weighted up to 3.65 or 4.25 tonnes. The motorhome has four belted seats and four beds, and is equipped for one person with a wheelchair. The vehicle is equipped with a wheelchair lift as standard, and it is also possible to have the vehicle equipped with a ramp. The driver's seat can also be adapted for wheelchairs, already at the factory.
Open plan - for wheelchair in motorhome
The motorhome has an open plan layout and it feels really big and airy when you look inside. There are no level differences in the floor, and the kitchen is adapted for a wheelchair user. The toilet and shower have also been adapted.
High demand
We talked for a while with the dealer from Varbergs Husbilar AB, who told us that the demand during the Elmiamässan has been great. Many people who drive a motorhome are already a little older when they buy one, and 30 years later one or the other of the couple may need to use a wheelchair. Should you have to give up your leisure interest then? Unfortunately, this has been the case for many, but with an adapted motorhome, it will hopefully be easier for more people to take part in motorhome life.
Dealers in Varberg
There is currently one BluCamp Sky Free dealer in Sweden, Varbergs Husbilar in Halland. The price is between about SEK 900,000 and one million, which is at least more affordable than buying and adapting a "regular" motorhome for accessibility. Very nice that motorhome life can be accessible to more people!

But it's great that they think about disabled people too. I know that it is hard to get around with a wheelchair because I sat in one when I operated on my foot. Then it was not at all possible to get into the motorhome ... good job.

I imagine it would be very tricky in a normal motorhome!

This is a great initiative!
But explain to me what I see in the pictures. See that there is a sliding door between the kitchen and the interior but there is no separate door to the toilet but only a shower curtain? And do you shower there in the middle of the floor before you have preferably folded away the bed? Doesn't it get very wet everywhere? There won't be much "privacy" there if there is someone sleeping or reading on the top bunk ... But of course, it might not be in a motorhome anyway?

Helena says:
I am not an expert on this motorhome so I don't know if I can fully answer the questions. Good reflections! I think it's quite challenging to make such a small area accessible for a wheelchair, and there must be open areas to create turning space. There is a sliding door so you can close it to the kitchen and then close it at the same time to the other two beds in the motorhome (which are at the front end). But in a motorhome, of course, you have to compromise on certain things due to limited space, and when you win something, you often lose something else. I actually didn't really look at how it works with drainage etc in the shower, but I think they should have solved it in a reasonable way?
