It's Monday and time for travel news again! This week it's all about new winter destinations, fitness trips, and travel companies that have ended up on the not-so-prestigious 'black list'. Any thoughts on this week's news?

New destinations among Swedes' winter favourites
August is over and many Swedes are booking holiday destinations for the winter. This year, Christmas is such that only five days of holiday can give 17 days off, and many people are therefore booking long-distance destinations. USA, Thailand and the Canary Islands are at the top, but several new destinations are also popular according to Resia. In the top 10 is Colombo in Sri Lankaand further down the list are Banjul, Gambia, Goa, India, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Tampa, Florida.
Direct flights from Karlstad to Prague
In collaboration with goTONordics, Karlstad Airport presents the spring novelty - weekend in the Prague, directly from Karlstad. The trip will take place on a direct flight from Karlstad on 30 April - May 2020. The flight, which takes just over two hours, will be on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 seats.
Exercise travel has increased by 100 per cent
Every tenth Swede has been on a training holiday, according to a survey conducted by Apollo in collaboration with Sifo. Training on holiday is becoming increasingly popular and the number of Swedes who have been on a training trip has almost doubled in just one year. This is what Swedes prefer to exercise while travelling:
- Hiking
- Yoga
- Skiing
- Bicycle
- Group training
Swedish parks prepare for Halloween
Furuvik reports that, after last year's success with 13,379 guests during seven days of Halloween celebrations, they are back with the celebration. Last year's attractions are joined by two brand new spooky novelties and two new food concepts are also presented. Skara Sommarland reports that they have started selling tickets for "Scary Sommarland". The entire carnival section will be transformed into a Halloween area with pumpkins, new food experiences, story reading and Halloween creatures.
Icehotel turns 30
30 years ago, Icehotel founder Yngve Bergqvist embarked on the journey that became the world's first ice hotel. Three decades later, the hotel has welcomed over a million visitors from every continent in the world. The anniversary hotel opens on 13 December. This year's artists come from China, Italy, South Korea and the USA.
Travel companies on the blacklist
A total of 82 times travel companies have chosen not to comply with decisions from the General Complaints Board (ARN) in 2018. Of these, airlines account for 68 cases, according to statistics from ARN compiled by the travel industry association SRF. The airline that most often chose to refuse ARN's decision is Ryanir (11 times). In addition to airlines, eight travel agencies or tour operators, four hotels, one coach company and one campsite are on the list, which you can see at Travelnews.se.

Ruth in Virginia says:
To me, it seems incredible that so many Swedes have so much
income, that they can travel (winter holidays) halfway around the globe. I have
how miserable so many people are, especially the elderly, but...
Isn't it the elderly 50-plus who do most of the travelling?
Just wondering, before I go to bed.
Waiting for photos from Switzerland : 🙂 .

Helena says:
Yes, that's interesting. There are actually quite a few Swedes who can afford to travel, and some even make long-distance trips. But of course there are a lot of Swedes who can't afford to travel as well. Perhaps the economic gap in Sweden has become greater than it used to be. It takes longer for Peter to write blog posts than it does for me, and we are busy preparing lectures for the Elmia fair, so I don't think he will have time before the fair. But you can look at some of his photos on Instagram (you can look even if you don't have your own account): https://www.instagram.com/freedomtravelnews/

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Interesting about the exercise list, I didn't think of hiking as exercise but it is. I thought of it more as wanting to be close to nature, that it is the primary thing. But of course, one doesn't exclude the other.
And I can't help but agree with Ruth. That "everyone" has so much money that they can travel both summer and winter is a mystery. Or could it be that the loan companies are rubbing their hands together?
We were in Tampa during the month of March about 20 years ago and boy were we cold at times! We probably thought it would be warmer than it was, it was Florida! Always sun and heat. But of course we had that too.

I may not think that "everyone" can afford to travel in both summer and winter, but there are quite a few who can. I think, as I also wrote to Ruth, that the economic differences in Sweden have become greater. That is, there are both those who can afford and those who cannot afford ... Interesting that it was so cold in Florida! Maybe you only see photos from the summer 😉.

Hahaha! I was in St. Petersburg, neighbouring Tampa,
in April (1952). Worked as a live-in maid for an elderly couple
from Massachusetts. Like you, I was surprised,
how cold it was, and it was a damp cold. No swimming in the Atlantic.
Brrr!

Ann says:
When it comes to finances, I think people prioritise differently to be able to afford to travel. I mean that I think people think and save more in their everyday life, in order to be able to afford to travel more 🙂 .
I was excited about the blacklist!
Nice to see that SAS was only mentioned on one occasion, as we are waiting to hear what happens after the big SAS strike 😀.

BP says:
Yes, training holidays, especially hiking in the Alps has really increased. Just read the blogs...
It's no surprise that Ryan Air tops the blacklist, but I'm surprised that Lufthansa is in "bronze".

Johnny Friskilä says:
All these surveys where you always only see the travel companies' own analyses and interpretations of the collected material and never the actual raw material, what people have actually answered... You have to take it with a big pinch of salt.
It will be exciting to see if they manage to sell all the seats on the flight from Karlstad.
