We have experienced a fantastic day of desert safari in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. It was really fun to drive a quad bike and there was also a meeting with Bedouins, camel riding, dinner and a show in the middle of the desert.

Desert safari in Sharm el Sheikh
Yesterday we went on a desert safari in Sharm el Sheikh, together with guides and a bunch of German tourists who were picked up at different hotels. It was a really fun and varied excursion that started at 3pm in the afternoon, and took us back to the hotel in the evening, after an exciting day of quad biking, camel riding, dinner and entertainment.
By quad bike in the desert
The excursion started with everyone being equipped with quad bikes. Many travelled alone on a quad bike, some sat in pairs and some families travelled together in a larger version with room for four.
I (Helena) am usually reluctant to drive things with a motor (trusting horses more, for example), but Peter persuaded me to drive my own quad bike instead of sitting behind him. Great! I was a bit unsure at first, but it was really easy and great fun once I started to relax.
What a great landscape to drive in! The desert is incredibly beautiful as the sun slowly sinks behind the mountains.
We had a photographer on the excursion who drove in front and behind to take photos from different angles. Afterwards you could buy both paper and digital photos. We haven't had time to get the digital photos yet, but we have taken two paper photos!
Bedouins and bread baking
We stopped after a while in a Bedouin village where we were offered tea and traditional bread. By the way, we could help bake the bread ourselves if we wanted to. Do not know if the bread master was really happy with Peter's effort there, haha ...? In any case, it was delicious!
Peter happened to accidentally take the photo below. He was supposed to be filming, but pressed the wrong button. Now he laughs so hard he can't breathe when he sees this picture. "Helena with her fingers in the jam jar" he calls it. And yes, the bread was good with that sweet honey on it!
Here is another photo of me from the same place. You could buy those upper goggles if you wanted protection from swirling sand. It looks a bit like going snorkelling in the middle of the desert, haha!
Camel riding
After the tea and bread break, it was time to ride a camel. Perhaps this suited me better! What I like about horses and camels is that they think for themselves and don't run into a wall or throw themselves off a cliff, even if you lose control.
Our young camel driver looked a bit tired, as if he had carried many tourists back and forth on his camel, but did a great job photographing us from different angles with my camera.
My camel showed a sophisticated disinterest in me, while Peter's camel was happy to turn round and say hello.
Dinner and show
After the camel ride it was time to move on with the quad bikes. We now arrived at a place in the desert where a large stage had been built, and around this there were dinner tables and seats. Here we were served a really good dinner with rice, various mixtures, aubergine, salad and grilled meat.
Meanwhile, we watched the dancers on the stage below. Most fascinating was a woman who was spinning around, around for so long that it was impossible to realise that she did not eventually become dizzy or lose her balance. At the same time, she did tricks with a large colourful skirt, which eventually lit up in the dark evening. In the middle of the desert!
We were spinning along in our heads before it was finally time to head back with the quad bikes. Truly an exciting day in the Egyptian desert! We thank the travel agency 1001 Natt Resor, who organised the trip for us. In the coming days we will try some of the other excursions they have in their programme - don't miss it!

Those chequered towels you have around your head,
did you feel they were necessary? Was there sand in the air?

Helena says:
Really lovely and cool excursion! And yes, the camels laid down so we easily got up! ? The "towels" were probably not absolutely necessary, but it was quite nice. There is a lot of sand when driving! And it was fun! ?

Wow what an experience!!! But understand that you got hurt! Have had similar experiences with a horse. When you are not used to it, it is tough to start immediately with such long trips ...!

Excited about the food.

Yes, we are enjoying!!! ?? And you can of course choose a tour with only quad bikes if you want! ?

Fun! And the pictures speak for themselves. Experienced similar here many years ago and even though it is quite touristy it is fun. Remember that we competed in camel riding and it was tough to keep up. And similar excursions are difficult to get on their own so good that they are organised. Know that we travelled with Vingresor and that they had arranged our excursion.
Stay well!
28 September 2019 - 14:41
Helena says:
Glad that you have experienced similar! Ving flew down here before, but no longer. Agree that it is touristy, but some touristy experiences can still be really good experiences! 🙂

What a cool experience! I've ridden a camel once before but am keen to do it again, but think it was really scary when they would get up. Then I clung on for dear life.
28 September 2019 - 17:42
Helena says:
Haha, yes you have to hold on when the camel rises! 😉 But if you are prepared and hold on properly, it goes quite well! 🙂

When I was two years old, I lived with my family in Cairo. My father was sent to set up the first regular flight connection from there to Sweden. There is a picture of me sitting on a camel in the desert, screaming my head off!!! I have always thought that I would return at some point, but I feel bad about the crowds, crowds, loud voices and intense traffic, and I think Egypt almost always feels like an unsafe destination. Now there are demonstrations and unrest again - do you not feel this at all?
29 September 2019 - 8:23
Helena says:
How exciting that your dad was involved in starting the first regular air service! Here in Sharm el Sheikh it feels very calm, in every way you can imagine. Even if there were demonstrations in Cairo, it's more than 6 hours away by car, maybe seven.

That 4-wheeling in the desert seems like a lot of fun! You seem to be having a great time.
