Dahab on the Sinai Peninsula

Dahab is a small town on the south-eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula facing the Red Sea, 12 miles north of Sharm el Sheikh. The town was originally a Bedouin village, but has now grown into a popular tourist resort. Many windsurfers and divers come here because the winds are good and the water is rich in fish.

Day trip from Sharm el Sheikh

We made a day trip from Sharm el Sheikh in a minibus with a German and an Austrian couple. The excursion went first to Mount Sinai and the Christian Catherine Monastery, which was completed in 565. We'll tell you more about this another day!

We are experiencing so many amazing things here in Egypt and it is impossible to talk about everything during the trip. Some things we have to save until we get home.

On roads through the desert

When driving in the Sinai Peninsula, you travel through desert, desert and more desert. The landscape is beautiful and at times almost reminiscent of a fantasy film with all the dramatic sand and rock formations. Peter sometimes says that it feels like being in a scene from Star Wars.

After just over an hour we arrived in Dahab, where we stopped at a rest area for coffee and a toilet visit. Then the journey continued to the famous Catherine Monastery. A few hours later we were back in Dahab!

Bohemian Dahab

Dahab is a bohemian little tourist resort, and we've even heard some people refer to it as 'hippie town'. That description may not be entirely inaccurate. Here, bohemian cafés are interspersed with colourful restaurants and small shops selling tote bags, harem pants and hookahs.

Of course, you can also come to Dahab for sunbathing and swimming or for water sports such as kite surfing, windsurfing or scuba diving. In this small town we also saw an unusual amount of bicycles.

Lunch in Dahab

When we arrived in Dahab we were hungry, and we went straight to the Al Capone restaurant. Here we got quite classic "tourist food", in the form of chicken fillet, fish fillet or the minced meat dish köfte with french fries and rice. The best thing about the restaurant was the fantastic location with the sea right outside the large balcony.

Shopping in Dahab

After lunch we went for a while and strolled the streets of Dahab. If we had had more time, it is very possible that we would have done some shopping here, but now we mostly looked around. One thing that we experience as nice during this trip is that the sellers are not at all as stubborn as we felt they were when we were in Dahab. Hurghada more than ten years ago. Of course they want to sell, but they also respect the fact that sometimes we want to look for a while in peace and quiet.

More to see and do in Dahab

Everywhere in Dahab we saw signs for various excursions, such as camel safaris or tours to Bedouin camps. It is also popular to climb Mount Sinai, which measures 2285 metres above sea level. For those who want to take it easy, there are plenty of relaxed bars and the opportunity to attend yoga classes, for example. All in the bohemian spirit of Dahab!
