Autumn weekend in Stockholm?
There is of course a lot to see and do during an autumn weekend in Stockholm. We don't have the ambition to offer a comprehensive guide, but here are some tips from us!
Cosy areas
There are many beautiful areas in Stockholm. If you come as a tourist, you should of course see Old Town. If you are lucky with the weather, it is also nice to walk around on the Djurgården, where you will also find many nice museums. It is also nice to stroll along The beach road in Östermalm or perhaps in The heights of the South on Södermalm.
Nature and parks
There are many natural areas in the Stockholm area that you can visit. If you stay in the city centre, you can find one of the many parks. For example, we have recently found Karlberg Castle Parkwhere we like to walk. Walking in a cemetery may seem a bit odd, but it's not. Forest cemetery is both beautiful and a UNESCO heritage site.
Interesting city walks
City walks can be interesting, even if you're from Stockholm. We have tried city walks with OurWay Tours, both standing walk in the Old Town (with the theme of Kisses & Dirt!) and city walk in Östermalm (with the theme From Shit to Luxury). Very interesting and entertaining!
Experiences on water
Some boat tours only run in the summer months, but others run for much of the autumn. We once took a classic boat sightseeing tour called the Under the bridges of Stockholm with Strömma, and this year it runs until 3 November. You can also take a boat out to beautiful Vaxholm.
Good restaurants
We don't go out to eat in restaurants often enough to be able to give any really good restaurant tips, but we were very impressed by restaurant Palett on Odenplan. If you are looking for real Swedish home cooking in a historic beer hall, it is also always fun to visit The mill at Medborgarplatsen.
Nice cafés
We seldom have time for coffee, but if you want to experience a truly classic café in Stockholm, this is the place to go. Wheat cats never wrong. Cozy during a chilly autumn weekend in Stockholm!
Comfortable bars
We don't hang out in bars very often anymore, but when we do, we've found that hotel bars often have a relaxed and cosy atmosphere. A favourite is the bar at Haymarket at Hötorget.
Exciting museums
Stockholm is one of the most museum-rich cities in the world. In other words, there are plenty of museums to choose from. We can make a case for Hallwylska Palace (for those who want to step right into an exclusive turn-of-the-century apartment), Tidö Collection of Toys and Comics (for those who want to remember the toys of the past) and Viking life (for those who want to think about what life was like in the Viking Age).
Impressive castle
If you like castles, there are several to choose from in and around Stockholm. You can of course check out The Royal Palace, and it is also nice to make an excursion to Drottningholm Castle.
Current events
There is always something going on in Stockholm. It's almost Halloween and there's a lot going on, including Halloween at Gröna Lund. For more current events and events for an autumn weekend in Stockholm see Visit Stockholm.
Fun shopping
If you want to find a lot of shops at once, you can go to Mall of Scandinavia in Solna. There are a huge number of shops, and when you get tired of shopping, you can enjoy everything from sushi on a conveyor belt to cinema or billiards.
If you're looking for some extra stylish menswear (maybe for Christmas?), we can also recommend our favourite store. Taracci on Tegnérgatan. Prefer to shop for food? Check out Hötorgshallen!
Relaxing spa and baths
Why not treat yourself to a relaxing spa or bath? Located in the centre of Stockholm, the classic bathhouses are Central baths and Sturebadet. Both offer swimming in beautiful surroundings, as well as the possibility of various treatments.
Different activities
Want to do something different during your weekend in Stockholm? Why not take a trip with Amphibious buses Ocean Bus?
Hotels for an autumn weekend in Stockholm
We usually (maybe for natural reasons?) never stay in a hotel in Stockholm. However, we like the atmosphere of Scandic Haymarket on Hötorget and the relaxed atmosphere of the Downtown Camper on Brunkeberg Square.
Campsites and pitches for an autumn weekend in Stockholm
Travelling with a motorhome? Here are some campsites and pitches that are open all year round:
- Tantolunden campervan campsite, Ringvägen 24, Stockholm
- RV park Stockholm, Flaten Skogsväg 30, Skarpnäck.
- Ängby camping, Blackebergsvägen, Bromma

Stockholm is a great city and we're going there in a couple of weeks to visit our son who lives in Söder. I think Millesgården is nice and this time Fotografiska is on the list.

Glad that it will be a visit to Stockholm! Fotografiska was a long time ago I visited, good idea! Do not know when I was at Millesgården either actually ...

The newly renovated Nationalmuseum is a gem! Restaurant Riche is super good. Scandic at Brunkebergstorg was a disaster after the renovation when I last stayed there (was the last time!), too bad because I have stayed there many times before and always been satisfied, so good location. Vasaparken and Sven-Harry's gold house worth a visit.

Helena says:
Yes, the National Museum is nice! Oh yeah, I actually read your post about your experience at the hotel! What a shame! Sven-Harry's gold house, what is it? Must check ...! 🙂

We have a very beautiful capital city with lots of things to do. We don't live too far away so we go there from time to time. Even if it's not very often.
I have also recently discovered hotel bars and hotel foyers. Nice atmosphere in the bars and nice to have a coffee in the foyers.

We usually plan a visit to Stockholm a couple of times a year if there is too much everyday life...
Now we thought we would go up in early December. Hallwylska has some special Christmas shows and on UN Day, 24 October, Fotografiska opens the exhibition Nordic Life, with photos taken during a week in May. For us "country folk" it's a fun break just over two hours away by train.
20 October 2019 - 9:26
Helena says:
Fotografiska often has interesting exhibitions that make me curious. Still, it's been a long time since we were there ... Maybe we'll have to pay a visit sometime!

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
City walks just perfect and get history from the hometown. I have walked in Helsingborg and in Höganäs. Lars Vilks was a participant on one occasion and he came to tell about his childhood in Höganäs how Christmas and Easter happened in his family in the houses we passed. So all these bodyguards who ran the route and secured all the corners so you felt safe.

Helena says:
Places often come to life when you hear stories about them! Different with Lars Vilks as a participant 😉.

Great tips! My favourites are Fotografiska, which I visit almost every time I'm in Stockholm, and Rosendal's garden on Djurgården when it's growing season!

Helena says:
Many have mentioned Fotografiska, think we need to get there soon (very long time ago)! And agree, Rosendal's gardens are very nice. Long time since I was there too!

Stockholm certainly has a lot to offer all year round. The National Museum as well as Fotografiska are well worth recommending too. As well as Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, Rosendal Gardens and Ulriksdal Gardens. I would also suggest "figure skating" in the Stockholm metro. I also recommend Sven Harry's art museum at Vasaparken. And there's a lot of theatre. If you have smaller children with you, Junibacken may be worth a visit and for slightly older children the Technical Museum and Vasa.
The bar at the Grand Hotel is also worth a visit, as is the one at the Diplomat Hotel.

Helena says:
Many good tips! I had no idea about Sven Harrys at all, but now many people have suggested it so we'll probably have to check it out! 🙂

BP says:
Yes, in Stockholm you never have to be bored, whatever the season. The choice is truly vast. Sven-Harrys at Vasaparken is definitely worth a visit, as is Fotografiska.

Helena says:
As I said, Sven Harry's is completely unknown to me, must probably check out simply! 🙂

Fotografiska is a permanent favourite. I usually focus on museums with the children during the autumn holidays - there are always a lot of extra fun activities then (last time it was Ethnografiska).

Fotografiska is good and many interesting exhibitions! Should go there more often I feel 😉
