What is popular on Instagram? What kind of pictures do people want to see? It depends a lot on who your followers are, and we decided to see what our followers like. The result was partly expected ... and partly quite unexpected!

Checking what's popular on Instagram
It started with me (Helena) looking at Instagram's own statistics for our account. We have a business account, and there is probably a little more information than if you have a regular private account. For example, we can see which posts during the year had the best reach.
The statistics speak for themselves. It's not blue mountains or shimmering green seas that come out on top, but ... motorhomes! The most popular posts this year include photos of our motorhome, photos of motorhomes we've borrowed and photos of motorhomes we've seen at fairs.
A nerdy statistics post
After this, I got a bit curious to look deeper into the numbers, and I already apologise for a slight misunderstanding. nerdy statistics post. By the way, I think I'm starting to realise why I work on evaluation during the day - I like bars and charts and order and stuff like that.
I suddenly found myself checking which motifs are and have been most popular on our Instagram account in 2019. You might think that I don't have anything at all to do during the day, but that's not really the case. Well, this is how I counted:
- Most popular motifs by range: I counted the number of posts for each type of subject and the percentage of these that had a reach of at least 900.
- Most popular motifs based on likes: I counted the number of posts for each type of motif and the percentage of these that received at least 150 likes.
Most popular by range
When it comes to which subjects have received the most coverage, it is undoubtedly images of both our motorhome and other people's mobile homes. Also, pictures of Peter, boats, beaches and mountains are spreading. However, if we want people to see our posts, we should not post pictures of cities, food, sights, cottages/villages or animals.
Most popular based on likes
Pictures of our motorhome has also received a lot of likes, but other people's motorhomes are not as popular if you look at it this way. On the other hand, we have received many likes on pictures of boats and on our houseboat. Significantly fewer people bother to click the like button if we upload photos of food, cities, cottages/villages, animals or people and parties.
Expected results or surprising?
We have many followers who travel by campervan, so it was expected that campervan images would be popular. However, I'm a bit surprised that pictures of animals are so unpopular. Myself love I take pictures of animals.

Statistics are fun. Motorhomes are at the top, not surprisingly, but I thought the houseboat would be higher. Food blogs abound, so that section is probably saturated.
? It's probably pretty obvious that Peter the "lensman" is going to be high on the list. It is you two who make the blog personal.
I continue to follow you! ?

Thank goodness someone else finds statistics fun! 🙂 You may be right when it comes to food...! The houseboat is quite high in terms of "like marks" from our followers, but on the other hand, the posts do not get as much reach - it may be because the hashtags are a little "narrower" ...?

Agree with Solan there, that the houseboat is not higher? And cute animals! And beautiful plants ... But now I don't have Instagram so I can be there and correct the statistics for you.
And yes, statistics are fun. Soon it will be time for me to compile the weather for October here!

The houseboat is quite high in terms of likes, but the posts don't get as high a reach as some others... Animals, yes, but what about them? Maybe the animals we photographed weren't cute enough, haha? 😉 We don't show beautiful plants very often ...

These are so much fun and interesting. We always get the most likes on pictures where we ourselves are involved. The pictures I think are the hardest to take :). Street pictures with unknown people, animals and food pictures do not go well with us either :).

Hard to know what people want to look at. In your case, motorhome and houseboat exteriors and interiors should be interesting.
In your country, I like to look at beautiful nature, the kind of pictures you have taken yourself.
Fun with statistics.
I can't see any statistics for me, but I get the feeling that people mostly look at nature pictures, preferably flowers and a nicely set plate with good food, some dogs, chickens.

Of all your nice pictures that you post on instagram, I wouldn't have guessed that the motorhomes would be the most popular 😀 fun!

I also thought that the houseboat would be higher, but not. In any case, it is clear that there are many motorhome fans 😀.

Interesting! My most popular image of all categories (sort of) is a picture of a whale shark. In 4th place is a manta ray. So apparently animals are a big hit with me. So now I will pepper Insta with new dive/animal pictures!

What a fun post and think, there seems to be more than me who think statistics are great fun if a little surprising sometimes. I understand if pictures of Freedom are high on the lists because many of the followers are perhaps motorhome drivers.
If there's one thing I'm getting tired of when it comes to IG photos, it's food, no matter how good it looks.

I am the exact opposite of you. Statistics, bar charts and not least Excel are like red flags for me. I don't know how many courses I have taken in Excel... nothing stuck... Luckily we are all different;-)

Pictures of animals are not the most popular with me either, I have noticed, but I have to post an animal picture every now and then anyway 😀 Fun with statistics, and there can sometimes be some surprises when you dive into the numbers.
