Table of contents
Best travel destinations in 2020
Travel News and Yougov surveyed 2074 Swedes across the country and identified three categories of travellers: the budget traveller, the security traveller and premium travellers. The Travel News editorial team also participated in the process, nominating destinations in co-operation with a number of travel profiles.
At the fair Travel News Market 2019 presented the gold, silver and bronze medallists in the Destination 2020 - best weekend cities, best 'regular holiday week' and best long trip for the different categories. What do you think? Are these the "right" winners? Are you missing any destination
For the budget traveller
The budget traveller wants value for money and cheapness on site. Here are the top destinations in 2020 recommended for the budget traveller.
Best weekend cities (Budget)
Our reflection: We agree that both Prague and Budapest are nice and interesting cities, and we are curious to experience Istanbul ourselves.
Best 'regular holiday week' (Budget)
Our reflection: Montenegro is nice, especially along the Bay of Kotor. Albania was also a favourite, where prices are even lower.
Best long holiday (Budget)
Our reflection: We loved Vietnam (where we actually got married!). Another great budget option in Asia is the Philippines.
For the traveller seeking security
The security traveller wants to know what they are getting and wants to feel confident in their choice of hotel and location. Here are the best destinations in 2020 recommended for the security traveller.
Best weekend cities (Safety)
- London
- Rome
- Prague
Our reflection: Rome really surprised us! Rome is a big city, but it still feels cosy and friendly, and there is so much to see!
Best 'normal holiday week' (Security)
- Croatia
- Canary Islands
- Crete
Our reflection: Croatia is a destination that always delivers. There are charming historic towns and villages all along the coast, and the water is crystal clear.
Best long journey (Safety)
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Maldives
Our reflection: We are so happy that we once had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand. What an amazing and varied country, and what a rich nature!
For the premium traveller
The premium traveller is prepared to pay more for a unique experience. Here are the top destinations in 2020 recommended for the premium traveller.
Best weekend cities (Premium)
- Reykjavik
- Rome
- Paris
Our reflection: Great to see Reykjavik at the top of this list! Reykjavik is a fantastic little capital city, full of culture and adventure.
Best 'regular holiday week' (Premium)
- Sardinia
- Amalfi Coast
- Mykonos
Our reflection: Sardinia was a highlight of our long European trip in 2015. But we also want to give a shout-out to the amazing Corsica.
Best long journey (Premium)
- Tokyo
- Hawaii
- Maldives
Our reflection: We haven't visited any of the destinations in the long-haul (premium) category, but Tokyo and the rest of Japan are particularly appealing.

I am not travelling at the moment. That is, nothing booked. But working to get a trip to the Maldives. So trendy I am. 🙂

Fun reading on a Sunday morning.
Agree with you re. New Zealand. I could imagine
to live there, if it wasn't so far away from everything (except Australia).
Don't understand the appeal of the Maldives. Just read, that it
is the flattest country in the world: 2.3 metres average height! Coral islands.
Japan - another country with many islands. Travelling by train there would be fun.
Corsica in April was absolutely wonderful. The husband and I drove a car
from south to north with detours to the beautiful capital, Ajaccio.
Eastern Europe was not available to us for a long, long time, unfortunately.
Don was in Prague in 1968 when the USSR invaded. I would have met
him there, but it didn't happen.

Helena says:
Wow, so flat! The Maldives looks dreamy, but it is perhaps mostly for sun and swimming ... Yes, I remember you telling me about Prague. Sooo different at that time, so much has happened!

BP says:
Yes, there is a lot to choose from. I have visited many countries. Some attract me (Japan, of course, as well as Australia and New Zealand), others do not attract me at all, such as Albania, Montenegro and the Maldives.

Elisabeth says:
Many beautiful places. Many we have visited and others remain for us to explore.

Maya Nordlund says:
So many great destinations! I also love New Zealand and always felt very safe there, so I can see why it came up high in that category. I dream of visiting Hawaii and the Maldives in the future, but for now I consider myself a budget traveller.
