We were really pleased with our hotel in El Gouna, Egypt. The Sultan Bey is beautifully located on a lagoon in luxurious El Gouna, and because it's small, it feels cosy and homely.

Sultan Bey - our hotel in El Gouna
We have for once travelled on a charter trip (with Airtours) and Peter chose a hotel in El Gouna that looked cosy. When he booked, he thought he was booking in Hurghada (which is just south), but with hindsight we are really happy that we ended up in El Gouna. And yes, the hotel was really cosy!
El Gouna is quite a special place, as it is an artificial holiday resort. At the same time, it is beautiful everywhere, and we really liked the hotel, which feels small and personal. The hotel is right next to the water, and is surrounded by vegetation and flowers everywhere.
Location of the hotel
Perhaps one of the most important things when booking a hotel is the location. At least we think so, and we have to say that the Sultan Bey is located absolutely perfect in El Gouna. It takes about three minutes to walk to the centre, where you can go shopping or perhaps try a restaurant.
If you want to get to the marina in El Gouna, you can take a tuktuk for a small fee. If you just want to hang out on a nice beach, take a shuttle boat to Zeytouna Beach Island, which takes a few minutes. You can also go on snorkelling excursions, starting right from the hotel.
Our hotel room
The room at our hotel in El Gouna was cosy and with the facilities you need. There was air conditioning/heat pump, plenty of electrical outlets, minibar and a safety box that could be locked. The bathroom and shower were excellent, as was the cleaning. We also had a patio. Soooo wonderful to be able to open up to the sun and the flowers outside!
The free WiFi included did not work in the rooms, but you could pay extra for "premium WiFi". We did not test this, but instead bought sim cards for our phones.
All Inclusive at Sultan Bey
We stayed with All Inclusive, which on Sultan Bey means that all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner in the form of a buffet or a la carte lunch on Zeytouna Beach Island) are included in the price.
At certain times, small pieces of pizza or cakes are also included at the pool bar. All local drinks (soft drinks, beer, wine, coffee, local spirits, etc.) are included in the price and served by the glass. Imported drinks, bottled drinks and freshly squeezed juices cost extra.
What did we think of the food?
We never think the buffet is much fun, but the food still gets a pass. For breakfast you can order eggs any way the chefs want and there's good bread, yoghurt, pastries and fresh fruit. For lunch, they often grill something, maybe hamburgers or skewers.
When it's time for dinner, you can expect a variety of dishes with both meat and fish, picked up directly from the chefs. The buffet also includes plenty of bread, vegetables, desserts and fresh fruit, and we feasted on strawberries and sharon fruit. The food wasn't always great, but most of it was good and over time we got better and better at picking out the "goodies".
The pool bar at Sultan Bey
The pool bar is nice and here we had several beers, Gin and Tonic, coffee and pizza bites. But don't worry about our health! On this trip we have for for once had time to work out. We've simply done a few yoga workouts in the room!
Final rating of Sultan Bey Hotel in El Gouna
We were very pleased with the Sultan Bey hotel in El Gouna, and can highly recommend accommodation here for those who want a quiet and relaxed holiday, especially for those travelling without children. It is almost so we could come here again, but we like to discover new places.

The hotel, the surroundings and the flowers were absolutely superb. Extra plus for the ground floor and the absence of screaming kids;-)
As I wrote before, all-inclusive food is what it is. They have to adapt the dishes to the guests. Saw that there was even Jelly-O for English people, good luck to them;-)
17 December 2019 - 17:17
Helena says:
Yes we liked this hotel! Then of course you have a point about the all-inclusive food. There were probably some English people there, so they might have eaten the stuff that was dangling 😉 Many guests were Germans though... not so unusual 😉.

Helena says:
It sounds like interesting trips, and that you might have stayed a bit more "authentic". Alcohol is not served everywhere in Egypt, but in the tourist hotels (and throughout El Gouna which is a tourist resort) alcohol is served.

snort says:
All inclusive can be a bit repetitive but after a while you learn to find the right thing and find the goodies. In addition, the hotel probably wants to adapt the food to suit tourists. For better or worse because I like domestic elements.
17 December 2019 - 20:25
Helena says:
Yes, but that's exactly how it is. There was some inspiration from domestic food on the buffet, but most of it was very international and customised.
