We often talk about things we want to see and experience while travelling, and it may seem like we're open to most things. But are we? Or maybe there are some holiday activities that we're not keen on at all?
Table of contents
What do we want not do while travelling?
Our blogger friend BP recently wrote a post about five things she would never do, which included things like flying a helicopter or swimming outdoors in January. We were inspired and have written our own lists of travel experiences that don't appeal to us.
Five travel experiences that don't appeal to Helena
1. Bungee jumping
I'm terribly afraid of heights and bungee jumping, from my point of view, seems completely out of place. terribly. Jumping off a cliff must go against your instincts. Why would you want to subject yourself to that?
2. Parachute jump
Parachuting is completely unthinkable for me for the same reason. I thought hang-gliding was in the same category, but I surprised myself when I tried it. Hang gliding in Switzerland 2018. But parachuting, no, that's where the line is drawn ...
3. ride the Ferris wheel
Ferris wheels should perhaps be relatively harmless, but I think they look really scary. I would really never put me in a Ferris wheel voluntarily.
3. diving
I've never liked being underwater and have unpleasant memories of taking those awful swimming badges at school. I'm not even keen on snorkelling, although I've now learned to look at fish only with goggles, without that nasty snorkel. Scuba diving is not on my world map.
5. Travelling offline
Travelling without being able to blog and communicate on social media would be... boring. I think I would simply feel very frustrated. Today, I would never choose to travel anywhere without my computer.
Five travel experiences that don't appeal to Peter
1. Winter baths
Peter is not particularly fond of the cold and does not understand the idea of winter swimming. He's more than happy to turn down this kind of activity (though he says that if someone challenges him with "man or mouse?" he's not quite sure what will happen...)
2. Travelling to New York
Never say never, but New York is probably Peter's least favourite destination at the moment. It just feels big and stressful? If there's one thing that attracts him to the US, it's nature experiences.
3. Travelling to Dubai
Another destination that doesn't appeal to Peter is Dubai. "We know that many people think otherwise, and we are careful to say 'never'. Perhaps we have a preconceived notion, but it simply feels like there are too many high-rise buildings and too much focus on luxury.
4. Cycling holidays with a tent
Peter likes nature and camping, but cycling around and camping is far too uncomfortable to be appealing. Not least because of all the technical equipment we carry with us and which we have to charge all the time. No, cycling holidays with tents are out.
5. Eating surströmming
Peter likes to try local dishes and is rarely afraid to taste them. I've seen him try everything from horse milk balls in Mongolia to French water snails. But surströmming is where he draws the line.
Are there any travel experiences that don't appeal to you?

Interesting! No, charters do not attract everyone ... (Your comment ended up in the spam for some reason. Don't know why ...)

I completely agree with both you Helena & Peter, none of these experiences are appealing, on the contrary.

No, not everything can attract everyone ... 😉 .

Hehe, funny post. I wrote this a year or so ago, touches a bit on the subject:
https://4000mil.se/utv/index.php/resorna-man-egentligen-inte-vill-realisera-bara-dromma-om/
I love going to New York and would really like to go scuba diving.
But gladly skip bungy-jump and living primitively without a bathroom. 🙂

Helena says:
No, dreams are not the same as what you really want. Space is of course exciting, but still, no thanks ... 😉.

Evy Knoph says:
Haha, funny post!
I agree with most of it, but definitely not New York, is the "country" for me, where I go 2-3 times a year. There is nowhere I feel as relaxed as there... Dubai, well, not really longing to go back, but.
I add: Going to the mountains, the Alps in the summer and hiking. Is for skiing for me.
Those tall things, like the Burj Kalifa, CN tower Toronto and others....sometimes challenge me to go up, but always fear the glass floor.
Then going to Africa and South America can almost be added to would never... doesn't appeal to me one bit....
I would also never book a SPA trip or a weekend etc.
Connect and disconnect!... was also worth 900 bucks recently in Japan, to be constantly connected.
12 January 2020 - 9:46
Helena says:
Oh, the part about the glass floor, I could have written that too. Soooo horrible...!!!! And yes, I know that many people love New York! We haven't been there, so of course we're speaking from an imagination, but so far it hasn't appealed.
12 January 2020 - 12:44
Anna-Lena says:
Funny post. I would never pay for .....
Skiing holidays ( have been, but no thanks, that's enough )
......Hiking in the mountains with a backpack....
Training holiday in the Canary Islands, shudder at the thought (I do some training at home enough) but pay for the same as you get at the gym at home, when there is a whole world of beautiful places....

Renate's travels says:
Fun post! I agree with much of what you list. Bungy jumping, diving and ice bathing I don't particularly want to do... parachuting I've had some desire to do in the past, but not much desire to do now. ?

Helena says:
So nice to hear that you are not hungry for winter swimming either! Sometimes it feels like a lot of people love to swim in ice pools haha 😉.

There are several things I have done where my first reaction was "No way!", like riding a biplane for example.

And I don't want to climb the Calpe Rock again either 😀.
12 January 2020 - 10:04

I had to google biplane! Looks a bit scary, I must say, but still exciting! 🙂

Marguerite Koos says:
Hello!
COOL post.
Almost agree with all of your 3/5 can imagine both diving and Ferris wheel. Of Peter's same 3/5 can imagine winter swimming and eating surströmming.
Otherwise, travelling to very hot countries is unthinkable for us and nowadays also in very cold countries. We also dislike big cities unless it is necessary to see a certain thing that we want to experience.
12 January 2020 - 10:22
Helena says:
I can understand the hot and cold thing. I am also sensitive to heat. Then it depends a bit on how you travel and what you do on the trip, I think. But I actually prefer if it is not too hot. Cold is more ok for me, if I have good clothes 😉.
12 January 2020 - 12:48
Ditte says:
Fun list! Diving, snorkelling, skydiving and bangy, winter swimming and a lot more I have done. N.Y. I have lived in and visited many times and can easily imagine travelling back there. Can think that big cities have their charm, definitely.
What I would refrain from today is staying at "all inclusive hotels", staying at a campsite. (Have tried both in different rounds) A trip to Nordkoera I refrain and likewise as a single woman again travelling to some North African countries. Bad experiences of it from Morocco and Egypt. I want to travel to countries where I can move freely everywhere and not just in the company of my husband. Don't want to feel trapped. Maybe this has changed, but my experiences remain. So the Arab Emirates are not appealing either.
12 January 2020 - 10:55
Helena says:
You are super tough! Not at all as cowardly as me 😉 The Egyptian tourist resorts I could definitely go to as a single woman, but then there are other places in North Africa where I probably would not want to travel alone. Agree with you that you don't want to feel trapped or too limited.

Monica says:
Haha! I think the tent picture is from one of the islands near us? None of the things you write about would I do either. Except helicopter then, my dad was a pilot so I have flown single engine planes and French reahelicopter when I was a child. DC3 too. However, I would never go to different types of jungle places where the moisture drips and snakes and scorpions crawl. Like Sri Lanka, which does not attract one bit (for many reasons). Also never on safari where you sit in an open jeep and suddenly a crazy elephant or rhino rushes forward. Or a lion sneaks around a bungalow where you have to lie framed by mosquito nets to avoid contracting life-threatening diseases. What's the point of that when you can see it much better with the help of Attenborough on TV? Thin air, heights and suspension bridges are completely out of the question - thought Dominica P was right to turn round and go home from the Expedition. I've ridden in a glass elevator on the outside of a skyscraper once in Chicago and the horror is indescribable. However, I have been up on the World Trade Centre and it was cool to see small planes and clouds below. Enhanced the feeling when the towers collapsed! Otherwise, I don't like New York either - it's just too much of everything. But other places in the US I know you would just think were absolutely fantastic. Write it in the next comment!
12 January 2020 - 11:45
Helena says:
Yes, but exactly, the tent picture is from one of the islands there! It was a really interesting experience and quite ok with a tent for one night, but a whole tent holiday is probably not for us ... 😉 And haha, like your descriptions of jungle and safari! Do not feel the same way, but can in a way understand when you describe so empathetically!!! 😉 When it comes to glass elevators, I feel just like you, I could have included that as a point! I am not so fond of high houses, but it can work if I do not have a glass elevator 😉.

Ann-Louise Paulsson says:
Apart from New York and Dubai, I agree with everything. I've been to New York five times and like the city even though I prefer Chicago. Dubai I am keen to go to (although the desire decreased a bit this week when Iran started talking about bombing Dubai). I have ridden the Ferris wheel many times before but nowadays I can't even manage the children's Ferris wheel at Gröna Lund, ha ha 🙂.
12 January 2020 - 11:46
Helena says:
What made you change your mind about Ferris wheels? *curious* Is it just a change over the years, or something else?
12 January 2020 - 12:54
Ann-Louise Paulsson says:
I think it's mostly the age ... as sad as it sounds. If it was spinning around all the time, I would probably be able to handle it better (I'm not afraid of heights really) but just this that it stops and stands still for a little while at the different heights (while the basket kind of hangs in a wire and dangles) I do not fix now that I am starting to approach fifty. 🙂 🙂
Roller coasters where there is full speed all the time are easier for me to handle even though I have become much more cowardly there too.
12 January 2020 - 13:35
Helena says:
It is perhaps not so strange that you change a little over the years. On the other hand, I have been super afraid of heights all the time 😉 I don't know if I have become more cowardly (because I have always been quite cowardly) but a little more comfortable ... 😉
12 January 2020 - 19:22
Monica says:
Here are things to do that I think you would enjoy in the US. Because you fell in love with both the Gorges de Verdon and les Ardèches in Provence. Anyone who once visited the Grand Canyon will never forget it - it simply cannot be described. The same goes for Niagara Falls. More locally known is the Mesa Verde Indian Reservation/National Park in Colorado - a huge experience on all levels, both historical and natural. There are unique prehistoric cliff dwellings that take your breath away. The mountains and the specific cliffs of Sedona in Arizona are also something you will never forget and it's a cool trip from there to Flagstaff at the Grand Canyon. If you want, you can spend a day in Las Vegas just for the incredible surreal feeling! And don't forget the cool Route 66 and the coastal road between San Francisco (an incredibly beautiful city with a European feel) and Los Angeles. A mini taste of everything this incredible country has to offer!
12 January 2020 - 12:07
Helena says:
Thanks for the tips Monica! Yes, we could probably guess such experiences. Then I don't really know when we can get away to the USA for a trip like this. It is also a financial issue ... But of course, such destinations can have a certain attraction! 🙂
12 January 2020 - 12:55
GladiGreen says:
Yes Monica, Niagara Falls is outstanding. We were there last autumn, you can stand (right next to the falls) for any length of time and watch the water. Will be a post on the blog in the future. Grand Canyon is very famous but many other places around there are cooler, I like Bryce Canyon, where you see everything from below, the mighty red rock formations. If you can get down into the Grand Canyon, it should also be cool. Otherwise, Yosemite is the most beautiful place I have seen in the United States. I could go back any number of times. Greetings Monica S

Anna, New York - My Bite of the Big Apple says:
Interesting reading!
Helena: I completely agree to never do bungee jumping, parachuting and diving. Hu! I have nothing against Ferris wheels. However, I think it is uncomfortable with cable cars where you sit open and dangle your legs ... I would not want to be completely disconnected nowadays either, but in the past it went well when you did not know anything else. 😉
Peter: I wouldn't winterise either! Simply can't do it for health reasons. Dubai does not attract me either, but more for other reasons. I have only had one cycling and tenting holiday, on Gotland as an 18-year-old. Managed to live a little more spartan at that time. But today? No, thanks. I have eaten surströmming a few times many years ago. Quite okay with the right accessories: bread, potatoes, red onions, etc. But the flavour lasted too many days afterwards to be worth it. 😀
But hey, reading that New York is the place you would LEAST visit, that hurt my heart a bit. Haha! New York which is my biggest passion. 😉 Don't any of my hundreds of posts about the city have any appeal? 😉
Joking aside, it is of course completely understandable that people prefer different things. But here I actually think it's a pure misconception. 😉 New York is really so much more than "big city" feeling and stress. I honestly think you would really like the city if you gave it a chance. You like good food from all over the world, unique and quirky concepts (like a restaurant inside a bank vault or other cool, secret places/experiences), events where you get to dress up and travel through time (Jazz Age Lawn Party), boat rides, great views and shopping? New York has plenty of areas with low-rise buildings, cosy streets, lush parks and gardens, and tranquillity, outside of the touristy and bustling Midtown (which I agree can be too much). And last but not least, interesting people who can invite the most unexpected experiences.
Sorry for the defence, but I couldn't resist, haha ...

Helena says:
Cable cars where you dangle your legs, yuck, yuck! I really dislike all cable cars, but after some travelling in Austria and Switzerland I have become better. I've been practising 😉 .
And yes, we realised that you might not like Peter's item on the list there... Of course, we might have a preconceived notion, and it might be different if we actually got there! When it comes to food, I can't really say it's appealing. We understand that there is food from all corners of the world, and if I were still there, it would be exciting to try different Asian restaurants etc. But when I'm sitting here in Sweden, it's more appealing to travel to Asia to try Asian restaurants, if you know what we mean? And American food, well, that doesn't really appeal to us. However, some cool and odd concepts in restaurants might be a bit fun! That we (and especially Peter) did not feel so attracted is probably partly because the city is so big (we are not so fond of big cities) and partly because you get a little overdose of American culture in the media, and then long for something else ... But of course there are many interesting things to see and experience in New York! Who knows, we might end up there sometime too, you never know 😉.
12 January 2020 - 13:13
Anna, New York - My Bite of the Big Apple says:
On second thought, I don't really like cable cars in general either. Especially not ones that go up and down cliffs. Ugh, I feel like they're going to crash!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on New York! However, that city is certainly not representative of the US, so I wouldn't call it directly "American". Nor is it typical American food or culture that attracts or is most prevalent. On the contrary, it is indeed a food mecca with "tasting" opportunities (including crossover cuisines) that are unrivalled elsewhere. Likewise, unique culture that has arisen precisely because people from all over the world come together, not exactly American at all.
Then, as I said, it's like several cities in one, and in many neighbourhoods you don't get a big city feel at all. That's what's so delicious, that just about EVERYTHING is there. Well, it cannot really be described but must be experienced on site. Hope you try one day! 🙂 But of course I understand that there are other things that attract too.

I think this sounds like a challenge! Anna, you should take Helena and Peter by the hand and show them your New York!

Anna, New York - My Bite of the Big Apple says:
Finally, thanks for your tip, Emma! Yes, that might have been something? 🙂
11 March 2020 - 13:25
Helena says:
Yes, it might be good if we had the opportunity to try sometime 😉 Emma's idea with you showing around would not be so bad! 🙂 But it is not free to travel there of course, so that is what is the tricky thing when you have to prioritise.
12 January 2020 - 19:26
Anna, New York - My Bite of the Big Apple says:
Exactly, that's how it is. But agree, good idea by Emma! 🙂
11 March 2020 - 13:25
Emma, sun like sun? says:
There is also the question of age ... Many of the things on the list I would have hesitated to do, but perhaps still dared to do when I was young. But now, as a fifty-year-old woman, there are many things I don't want or intend to do. Have become a little afraid of heights in "older days" in certain situations. No problem with climbing to the roof or flying, but it's that in-between thing. We went on the Ferris wheel at Öland Zoo and I just sat and looked at the ossified nuts and listened to the creaking. It was not a highlight in a positive sense.
In countries where women MUST wear a headscarf, are not allowed to drive, etc. will never be honoured by my presence.
However, I would have no problem camping for a week without a connection. I'd like to have a phone to be able to reach or be reached, but I don't need to have access to anything else.
12 January 2020 - 12:37
Helena says:
Yes, you are right about that! I've probably always been afraid of heights ... But on the other hand, I was probably prepared to travel more uncomfortably when I was younger 😉.
12 January 2020 - 13:15
bmlarstravellingblog says:
What a fun post!
We can agree with some of them, including bungy jump, Surströmming and Dubai.
We think heights are okay and New York is a bit of a draw.
What we can't imagine doing is going on a cruise!!! (At least not for many years)
12 January 2020 - 13:17
Helena says:
Interesting, what do you dislike about cruising? I think it can be a little different depending on what type of cruise it is. All cruises do not attract us, but there are cruises that do.

Lindha - Resamedfamiljen.se says:
Haha, so much fun. When I saw the tent, I immediately thought, camping is not my thing. Last summer, the kids and I camped for 2 nights together with a lovely group of cousins and children. And the kids thought it was soooo much fun. I thought it was very nice but would like to replace the tent in the concept next year 🙂.
12 January 2020 - 15:40
Helena says:
Understand that the kids liked it! 🙂 I can imagine camping for a night or so, but not a full on camping holiday....
12 January 2020 - 19:29
Snows says:
Experiences based on going high up in the air are not for me. I wouldn't dream of camping either. I have been to Dubai and it is an interesting destination in many ways. Then it is a destination that gives a little double feelings though. In any case, I came up in the Burj Khalifa, which I am proud of. When it comes to travel destinations, the Canary Islands have never attracted me. Generally speaking, I avoid anything abroad where animals are exploited or hurt. It is simply a position and a matter of principle.
12 January 2020 - 16:36
Helena says:
Yes, opting out of activities for ethical reasons is another, but important, perspective.
12 January 2020 - 19:30
BP says:
Well! So much fun that I for once inspired you, it's usually the other way round;-) Thank you so much for the link!
I can safely say that we pretty much agree on all points except one. And that is surströmming. Love this delicacy that smells much worse than it tastes.
We have been to Dubai before the country "exploded", and it was an adventure in every way. Oh yes, I was the one driving the car there, not my husband. You had to go to an office where they took a photo and then you got a "driving licence" that was valid as long as you were in the country. It was also valid for all countries within the UAE.
We have only visited New York once, and strangely enough it was a disappointment for me. Everything is very high, very grey and quite dirty. However, the restaurants and nightlife were much more cheerful.
12 January 2020 - 17:07
Helena says:
Yes very funny, we thank you for the inspiration! 🙂 And yes, it's lucky that some people like that surströmming, we let you have it alone! 😉
12 January 2020 - 19:32
Frizz says:
Travelling unspecified. I need to know where to stay, otherwise: anxiety.
Camping or similar without a private bathroom is also out of the question. Then I get tense, my stomach rebels or stops working and with both, the trip is ruined ...
Then also nejtack to snakes and other poisonous animals.
12 January 2020 - 20:04
Helena says:
Very interesting! It's good to know what you like and don't like 😉 And no, I don't like snakes either ...
13 January 2020 - 7:17
Lisa says:
Agree with everything that is in the air, parachute, bungee jumping and also walking over rope bridges. Not my thing at all because I am afraid of heights. Have at some point gone over a rope bridge but was so scared that I have forgotten about it. We flew helicopter in Venezuela when we paddled on the Orinoco River and it went well, was even a little cool. Where I absolutely do not want to go is Chernobyl, I have seen many tourists there and it is incomprehensible to me. Why expose yourself to emissions that are still there after so many years?
12 January 2020 - 20:08
Helena says:
Wow, I think you were really brave to cross that rope bridge, despite your fear!!!! I do not feel the same way about Chernobyl actually, but interesting!
13 January 2020 - 7:18
Beppan says:
Interesting reading! How lucky that we have different views on what is appealing when travelling and what is not. Imagine if everyone thought the same - how boring that would be!
I agree with some of your five - except the Ferris wheel. I can control my fear of heights pretty well in one of those.
Of Peter's five, it is the sour herring that I exclude. A delicacy! And then Dubai, which I have already visited.
All-inclusive travel is not fun for me. I want to seek out restaurants myself and try different local dishes. Rafting and other action sports are not what I'm into.
Travelling to countries with high crime rates is not my thing either. Safety is important.
12 January 2020 - 22:36
Helena says:
Yes, it's lucky that we think differently, completely agree! And surströmmingen, for example, we let you fans have in peace 🙂 I have done rafting, but felt quite "finished" with it haha. (I mean, I survived, why expose myself more times!? ;))

Lena - good for the soul says:
I wouldn't go on a sailboat when it's windy (yes, I know, that's the whole point of the wind) or walk across a suspension bridge with a cliff below!!! Can hardly imagine anything worse.
Then I can add that I think New York feels less stressful than Stockholm city.
Hug Lena
13 January 2020 - 5:45
Helena says:
Yes indeed, remember that you did not like the idea of a sailboat! And it is fortunate that we are all different and can make different choices 🙂 Less stressful than Stockholm? With soooo many people? Ojoj, I need to see it to believe it, haha 😉.

Love surströmming and New York!
Like charter and Canary Islands, hehe!
But we can skip bungee jumping and parachuting, as well as winter swimming.
Not keen on hiking or camping either!
How fun to read all the answers, and how different we are!

It's good that we are all a bit different! And yes, great fun to read all the answers! 🙂
14 January 2020 - 6:51
Ruth in Virginia says:
A fun read.
More on Helena's side. But - The smell of surströmming makes me sick.
Love water, but want to be on the surface. Canoe camping in
Canada was a wonderful experience
Never to Las Vegas or any of the Disney parks.
is completely artificial.
Non-cruise - hate the big ships coming into harbour!
and "spew out" people, who spend a few hours on shore and so
back on board to eat and watch lavish shows. OK,
I know, that it can be different, but have not voluntarily tried.
Never caravan (sorry abt that) Nasty after the roads. 🙂
Winter swimming - once in a lifetime in (Svängbågen)
The most fun was "winging it", i.e. travelling without a definite plan, and
without reservations.
13 January 2020 - 14:31
Helena says:
That artificial stuff doesn't attract us very much either (although we don't opt out completely). And yes cruise and caravan we suspected 😉 Luckily we are all different!
14 January 2020 - 6:53
Solan says:
So much fun and so many people getting into the subject! We have been addicted to the USA for a long time...but Eastern Europe is not appealing. We have travelled there, but nothing that gave more taste.
You should nurture your prejudices, haha! ???
13 January 2020 - 16:12
Helena says:
Haha, yes, you should nurture the prejudices!? 😉 It is possible that we would change our minds about NY if we went there, who knows ... At the same time, it will be difficult to prioritise it (it is not free) when it does not attract ,,, So then you have to nurture the prejudices, haha 😉
14 January 2020 - 6:54
Maria / MagnoliaMagis says:
Wow, yes there are many things that do not attract! Agree with you both in most things except travelling disconnected and winter bathing.. 😉 Going into caves is not something I would like either. Snails in France I have tried and I won't do it again. Frog legs were ok, tasted like chicken, but I'd rather eat chicken so you get something substantial to eat. We said we would never live in the forest again...ha ha ha as I said never say never..;D
13 January 2020 - 19:36
Helena says:
Haha, no, the part about saying "never" ... you have to be careful about that 😉.
14 January 2020 - 6:58
GladiGreen says:
Great post! Agree with many things but definitely not surströmming. A real delicacy! But then you are a northerner and live in the High Coast, the heart of surströmming country! Was in NY last autumn, among other things, and was fascinated by how calm it was. Safe and no bustle in sight. Better than Stockholm, I think. But a few days can be enough, the beautiful nature is the USA's best. Will the post with budget tips for NY soon on the blog. We quite often, but cheap. Have a good time/Monica
13 January 2020 - 23:45
Helena says:
So lucky that we are all different, and we leave all the surströmming to you surströmming fans 🙂 Interesting that you thought NY was so far! We'll see if we get the chance to challenge our prejudices on occasion 😉.

Sandra Lifsresor.se says:
Oh Helena, I will have to work a little on your aversion to diving. You miss so much! But bungee does not attract me either even though I loved paragliding.
14 January 2020 - 15:36
Maria's Memoirs says:
Fun read, I agree with a lot of it. I like camping if the climate is nice, but both cycling and camping? Well... Rather road trip and camping! Don't want to dive at the moment, stick to snorkelling because I want to stay on the surface.
29 February 2020 - 18:46

I like Ferris wheels and scuba diving is so great! I could definitely imagine going on a trip and being completely disconnected - would be so nice in this digital world. Updating can be done afterwards.
I've been swimming in the winter and can enjoy those seconds after getting out of the cold water. However, I would like to have access to a really hot pool or sauna immediately afterwards.
New York was not a dream destination for me but I still enjoyed being there. It was not at all as stressful as I had thought. But that's kind of what you make of it too.
I also completely agree with Peter that I will never, ever eat surströmming!
