This week we can tell you about a collaboration that we are really excited about. We can also tell you about different conspiracy theories about a city that we are going to visit this spring. Well, if it exists, that is?
Table of contents
Good co-operation with the German Tourist Office
As you may know, we have had a lot of cooperation with the German Tourist Board, which we are very happy about. That co-operation is really good at all ways. We've done fun trips with them (the Beach Basket Challenge!) and they've sponsored posts on our blog.
Last year we wrote one post a month in cooperation with Germany. For example, you may remember our posts on asparagus in Germany, magic castles in Germany or beautiful roads in Germany?
We will continue the cooperation this year, and in 2020 we will also write one post a month in cooperation with the German Tourist Board. We are currently working on the content. They have given us a number of suggestions (some of which we see as really We are looking forward to writing!) and we will get back to them about what we think, and what we would like to write about.
Then, when the time comes, we get tips and links on the subject from the tourist office, and write based on that and our own thoughts and experiences. Hope you're looking forward to more Germany inspiration throughout the year!
The Bielefeld conspiracy
I (Helena) have told the German Tourist Board that I am going to the University of Bielefeld in May for work purposes (lecturing and exchanging research experiences with others in my field). Then the tourist office told me that there is a "Bielefeld Conspiracy" which satirises conspiracy theories, and claims that Bielefeld does not exist.
- Do you know anyone from Bielefeld?
- Have you been to Bielefeld?
- Do you know anyone who has been to Bielefeld?
Most people are expected to answer 'no' to the questions, and if you answer 'yes', you are told that you are 'deluded'. When Angela Merkel visited the city in 2012, she reportedly said afterwards "...if it exists at all" and "I had the impression that I was there." So, let's see where we end up ...!? (Yes, Peter is coming!)
Firewood for the coming winter
By the way, we've stocked up on firewood. You may remember that our air heat pump broke down? We can't afford to buy a new one right now, but we have stocked up on wood. If it's a real winter, we'll be able to heat ourselves!
Best this week?
The best part of this week for us is probably the continued co-operation with the German Tourist Board. What has been positive during your week?
The week ahead
In the coming week, we have more meetings with tourist offices booked. We had actually thought about going to the Matka travel fair in Helsinki, but it didn't fit well with a thing at work. We are staying at home right now, and it feels perfectly ok!

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
Bielefeld yes, I have been there, visited Max Müller. But I haven't seen much of the city. MAX MULLER GILDEMEISTER is processing machines for the engineering industry (Lathes).
So you can visit a place also on a living and shopping trip!
17 January 2020 - 7:30
Helena says:
Glad you were there! Maybe the city exists after all? 😉

Emma, sun like sun? says:
Exciting about a city that exists but does not. How do you achieve such a status, really?! If you live there, how do you like it, should it get a bit tiring? To be a bit "city-less" ...
Looking forward to hearing more about your work trip and knowing more about the city. Yes, if there is a city to travel to?
The best thing so far this week must have been the weather!
17 January 2020 - 8:51
Helena says:
Haha, yes many questions, right? Will return with reports in the future 🙂

Hihi, what a funny conspiracy theory. They also joke that Australia doesn't really exist and that everything is staged for the tourists who think they are going there? Googled this article which also mentions a conspiracy theory about the existence of Finland, never heard of it before? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/technology/shortcuts/2018/apr/15/australia-doesnt-exist-and-other-bizarre-geographic-conspiracies-that-wont-go-away

Helena says:
"How did we ever believe that kangaroos were a thing?" Hahahah!!! 🙂 Pretty funny these conspiracy theories! And Finland!!!?

How nice that you have achieved a continued good cooperation with the German tourist office! It is a country that we still have a lot to discover, so good tips and articles are gratefully received.
However, we haven't heard of Bielefeld, exciting!
The best part of the week is that it feels like we really got started at the gym and even my arthritic knee is starting to become relatively painless. So nice!
17 January 2020 - 13:06
Helena says:
Yes, great fun! And really fun to discover more of Germany, it feels like there is so much to discover in that country 🙂 And so nice that you have started training! Good job!!! 🙂

Lena in Wales says:
I have been many times in Bielefeld
First time with friends living in Bad Oyenhausen, not far from Bielefeld, around 1988.
Then stayed overnight as a tour guide several times on the way from Spain back to Sweden on several occasions.
I think of it as an old textile town, mainly the linen industry.
Something tells me Dr Oetker and baking powder, a by-product of the linen industry, but I don't know why I think so. Will have to google it. Could be completely wrong.
Wishing you a great weekend!

Helena says:
Hmm... then maybe the city exists after all? ? And interesting that you get these associations, we'll have to do some googling 🙂 .

I have neither been nor heard of Bielefeldt. It's funny that the city doesn't really exist. Exciting to do more co-operation with the German tourist office. The best thing that has happened to me this week is that I have got a couple of days off in Jerez before we leave for the next long stay.
Happy Friday!!!

Maria /Magnolia Magis says:
Ha ha! Sounds almost like our Bermuda Triangle in the forest... Do we exist? Our address is sometimes available, sometimes not. Mobile phone coverage... Not available, well sometimes... Happy friday!

BP says:
Congratulations on the continued co-operation with the German Tourist Board. The conspiracy theory is the world's attraction for tourists. Who doesn't want to travel to a city that doesn't exist - hahaha!
But it must exist, because just like Lena, I associate Bielefeld with Dr Oetker and a mediocre football club in the German second division;-).
