Does it never snow in Stockholm? I (Helena) long for the snow. I'm not sure that Peter feels the same way, but ... you have to have some snow, right? The snow lights up, and it will be like that. cosy. But this year I'm almost giving up hope for snow. What does it usually look like? I have checked the archives ...
Snow in Stockholm - January weather according to the archive
One good thing about having a blog is that you don't need a good memory. You can simply cheat and peek into "blog memory". And that's exactly what I've done. I've looked at photos from five winters - all winters since 2014 except for 2015, because we were on our campervan trip around Europe Then. Here are winter photos from the marina where we live, in Solna, Stockholm County.
January 2014
Winter 2014 was our first winter in the houseboat, and it looks like we had snow in January. As you can see, we hadn't rebuilt the houseboat yet. We had an uninsulated upstairs with single glass windows, but we survived the winter.
January 2016
In January 2016, we also had snow. Not so thick snow perhaps, but a thin layer is enough to make it white and nice.
January 2017
In January 2017, the ice was thick around the houseboats, so there was probably snow too. The ice is not everywhere because there are propellers inside the marina that keep the water moving.
January 2018
In January 2018, Peter had to sweep the gangway clean of snow, so obviously we had snow in January that year too.
January 2019
In January 2019, however, it looks remarkably free of snow and ice. However, there had been a storm!
Snow in Stockholm - February weather according to the archive
So far there is little snow in Stockholm in January, but dare we hope for February? I have browsed through the archives to see how it has been in recent years.
February 2014
In February 2014, it looks like the snow has melted away again. On deck are new windows, which are now in place in our remodelled houseboat.
February 2016
In February 2016 we had both snow and sea smoke. It is not entirely uncommon to see the formation of sea smoke here when it is cold. Since propellers keep the water moving, it does not freeze, and this apparently contributes to the phenomenon of sea smoke.
February 2017
In the photos from February 2017 you can see that the ice is about to drift into the marina from Lake Ulvsunda. For us, this usually means a number of nights of sleeping while the broken ice floes pound hard against the hull.
February 2018
In February 2018, there was apparently both snow and ice, and snow on the ice. At least it was white!
February 2019
In February 2019, it was right Winter. I remember that our houseboat was leaning heavily, as it had been snowing and blowing at the same time, and the wet snow had settled in a heavy drift on half of the houseboat roof ... The top picture is from the same occasion, and you can find even more photos in the post from 5 February 2019:
Snow in Stockholm this winter?
Will we get snow in Stockholm this winter (apart from the little that fell before Christmas)? Do you like snow?
Lisa / Let's go Explore says:
I love snow! Then I usually think that it is enough with a few centimetres in Stockholm, so it becomes bright and nice and the children can go sledding - but no more because of the inconvenience. On the other hand, lots of fun in Dalarna and further north for skiing and stuff! Then I get the best of both worlds.
The winter is long and it will certainly have time to change before real spring. Maybe like in 2018 when it was freezing cold and snow in April here in Stockholm?! Hehe.

Yes, there is still time for winter, fortunately 🙂 And of course it is easier with a lot of snow in the north 😉.

Emma, sun like sun? says:
I do like snow! When it falls calmly and quietly, everything is so quiet and everything is new, untouched.
Unfortunately, this is rarely the case and we are rarely left alone for any length of time. There is always someone who has to break the silence or make a lot of tracks in the mess. And then it becomes grey mush.
Yes, the blog is great at allowing us to reminisce!

Can agree, when it rains and gets wet it's not as fun ... And of course the blog is good for the memory! 🙂

It's good to have an organised image archive to rummage through when you're wondering about something 🙂.
Nice comparison post!

Real winter is still great!
Imagine 2018 when we had no snow and woke up on 3 February with just over 40 cm of snow, luckily it was a Saturday. Just a few miles from here it was almost snowless. Then we had a lovely winter well into March.

Good with documentation and photo evidence, then there is no discussion;-)
I hate snow - at least in Stockholm, so I love this winter. But we still have February... A bit late for snow then, I think, but if a cold snap comes, you might be happy in a few days;-)

Up here in the North we usually have lots of snow this time of year, but this year there is not much snow. Strange climate we have now?

So do I. I actually also long for snow. We'll see how it ends 🙂 .
