Here is our list of capitals! Which capitals have we visited, which ones have we "missed" despite visiting the country, and which ones do we dream of visiting? Feel free to join in and tell us about "your" capitals!
We found this fun list of capitals at Maria's Memoirswho in turn found inspiration from A little more pink. Here are our answers!
Table of contents
Capital cities we have visited
We start by listing the capital cities we've visited and it's a small group - 20 in Europe, 7 in Asia and 4 in the rest of the world.
Capital cities in Europe
We have calculated that we have visited 31 countries in Europe, excluding Sweden and autonomous territories (such as the Faroe Islands or Northern Ireland). In these, we have visited the capitals of 20:
- Helsinki, Finland - several times, at the latest in 2019
- Reykjavik, Iceland - several times, a favourite city
- Copenhagen, Denmark - several times, but long ago
- Tallinn, Estonia - several times, most recently this summer
- Riga, Latvia - including for Christmas 2015
- Vilnius, Lithuania - only Helena, a long time ago
- Kiev, Ukraine - twice, exciting city!
- Moscow, Russia - when we travelled on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
- Brussels, Belgium - here we were in 2018, really good experience
- Amsterdam, Netherlands - in concert 2017
- Bern, Switzerland - here we have been swimming in the river Aare
- Warsaw, Poland - Christmas market visit 2016
- Prague, Czech Republic - here we were also at the Christmas market in 2016
- Budapest, Hungary - several times, most recently last autumn
- Paris, France - only Helena, a long time ago
- Rome, Italy - here we were in 2017, great city!
- Vatican City, Vatican City - took the opportunity when we were in Rome
- Valletta, Malta - three visits so far, nice city!
- Lisbon, Portugal - during the 2015 European trip
- Zagreb, Croatia - twice, cosy capital!
Capital cities in Asia
We have visited 8 countries in Asia, and in 7 of these countries we have had time to look around the capital. At least if Jerusalem is to count as the capital of Israel, which is not entirely uncontroversial.
- Jerusalem, Israel - during the 2018 trip to Israel
- Beijing, China - twice (Helena) and once together
- Ulan Bator, Mongolia - a stop along the Trans-Siberian railway
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - on holiday in 2013
- Bangkok, Thailand - on holiday in 2006
- Hanoi, Vietnam - here we got married in 2007
- Manila, Philippines - on holiday in 2014
Rest of the world
We visited four countries in Africa, plus Canada and New Zealand. Among these six countries, we visited the capitals of two.
- Nairobi, Kenya - interesting trip in 2012
- Wellington, New Zealand - here we celebrated new year 2006/2007
Capital cities we have not visited (although we have visited the country)
Europe
In a total of 11 countries in Europe, we missed the capitals. Often this is because we had other priorities, but some would be interesting to visit at some point!
- Oslo, Norway - Telenor Arena can hardly count?
- Dublin, Ireland – North Beach is a bit out of town ...
- Berlin, Germany – Potsdam is the closest we have come to
- Vienna, Austria - is on our bucket list
- Madrid, Spain - perhaps in the future?
- Ljubljana, Slovenia – Ljubljana Resort is the closest ...
- Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina - just Mostar so far
- Skopje, Macedonia - only the area around Lake Ohrid
- Podgorica, Montenegro - perhaps in the future?
- Tirana, Albania - we just rolled through ...
- Athens, Greece - haven't seen much of Greece yet
Asia
In Asia we've been good at pinpointing capital cities, but in Sri Lanka we chose to experience wildlife, nature, beaches and smaller towns.
- Colombo, Sri Lanka – Negombo became the closest
Rest of the world
Of the other six countries we visited in the world, we missed the capital cities in four of them.
- Cairo, Egypt - is on our bucket list!
- Rabat, Morocco - perhaps in the future?
- Dodoma, Tanzania - we stayed along the coast ...
- Ottawa, Canada - made only one visit to Halifax
Capital cities we want to visit
We often prefer small towns to big cities, but of course there are capital cities that are exciting too. There are many we would like to visit. In the countries we visited, we would like to see Berlin, Ljubljana and Cairo, among others. In addition, these, for example, sound exciting:
- Tokyo, Japan
- Beirut, Lebanon
- Kathmandu, Nepal
Which capitals have you visited? Which countries have you visited but "missed" the capital? Which capitals do you dream of seeing?

Helena says:
Fun to think about where you have been 🙂 .

Ah, how funny. I have also been thinking about that lately. Quite often I rationalise away the capital of a country. Because I think there is nothing to see there. But then you always regret it a little, a little. Because it would have been fun to see anyway. Like Tirana, Podgorica, Brussels, Windhoek, etc.
Capital cities that I have visited and can say on my own that there was nothing to see are Manila and Bucharest.
Now everyone advises against the Maldives' capital Male. But we might swing by anyway.

Helena says:
I think the same way. We rarely focus on the capital. But at the same time, it is often a bit interesting anyway ... 😉.

What a fun post. When we start thinking, it makes for a post of its own, especially during these weeks we spend at home with grey weather, work and a bit of "dozing", i.e. cleaning out cupboards and wardrobes.

Great list! I've visited 62 countries to date, on all continents with the exception of Antarctica. And at a quick glance, I have visited the capitals of most of them. Moscow, Bucharest and Warsaw I have not yet visited. But Warsaw will be in due course.

Helena says:
Wow, that's a lot of countries, it would be long if you were to write a list 😉.

Ditte says:
I don't write a list as a blog post, but have made notes of countries and cities I've visited. Thinking and remembering meetings and experiences around the world. But of course it is fun to summarise your travels. Then becomes quite tangible also what you experienced.

Maria /Magnolia Magis says:
Wow, that's quite a list! Hm, I have been to Copenhagen, Oslo, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Vatican City, San Marino, Monaco, Vienna, London and Athens. I'm not really interested in big cities so I don't feel that I have any desire to see more. Iceland, Ireland and Scotland possibly, and Amsterdam... ? There were some anyway!
21 January 2020 - 16:41
Helena says:
We are probably also often more focused on other places, but the capitals are interesting too ... I can recommend Reykjavik 🙂.

At least you still have some capital cities left. Like Ama, my dream is Japan, with Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Wow, what a list! Nice to list everything like that. Many of the cities you have been to I have also visited. Oslo, Paris, Bangkok, New York, London, Edinburgh are examples of some in addition. Dublin, Vienna and Tokyo feel most attractive as new destinations right now.

Monica says:
A bit funny, twelve capital cities came to mind right here at the kitchen table and all have a lot of history and are interesting. And many others I have visited and spent the night in, cities are fun, Brussels and Amsterdam not exactly any highlights anyway I thought. And Beirut and China etc. probably go away as desirable places today, haha. But others exist.
